I might try for a platinum in this game. I have never gotten a platinum. I don't chase trophies for the most part because most of them are so damned tedious. With this game, I'm having so much fun that even the tedious stuff doesn't bug me.

So I've made the mistake of using the names given randomly for familiars instead of making up my own. That wasn't a problem until I started to try and max out each level and am now switching out familiars at random. Now I forgot who my max toons are and who my tamed toons are

I made my own names for some, minus the ones I don't really ever care to use. You can get your ass I named that skeleton Boner.

My problem is that I put some that I was leveling in the retreat many hours ago and now I can't tell the difference between those and the naturally tamed ones. So I'm starting over by taming new ones with specific names. I didn't lose any of my normal rotation-thank god- but some of my secondary is now being completely redone. I don't HAVE to max out each metamorphose but I WANT to.

There's a little side mission after you beat the game that just relies on luck. Kind of making me mad. It has to do with alchemy. You have to make some kind of axe, and some of the items are randomly dropped from enemies in the last dungeon. I hate it when games force luck and chance upon you.

Swaine can't steal what you need?

No from what I read it's a drop. A random drop at that. Which is also a random encounter. Things like that bother me. Hopefully it's not true.

!!MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!





I'm not sure what item is giving you a problem but I will assume it's the Scroll of Truth. Here's how I'm farming it with moderate success-

On the Tombstone Trail go to the last save point and save. Now go back into the cave and take a right at the first fork. You'll cross a bridge and end up at a dead end with a chest(be careful, there's a slow curse at foot of chest). Go back and forth between the chest and the fork scaring away any mob that isn't a Golden Honker. The Golden Honker you can steal the Scrolls from is called a Honky Tonker. Set your party at "Don't Do Anything" and "All-Out Defense". Switch to Swaine. You now have two options-

1- Wait for a Golden Glim to drop and then use Swaine's special (light fingers or whatever) for a %100 chance at the Scroll, or
2- Take a chance and steal from the Honky Tonker after he casts his "Love" spell(I forget the specific name but it has Love in it and the animation has hearts like Esther's Tame.

Or you can just poke your eyes out and bang your head against a wall.

I really enjoy the post game content. I'm at 73% trophy completion. 50 familiars short of 250, 68% alchemy, 97% wizard's companion and the Alchemy quest are all I think I have left. And then I try and nab all of the Golden familiars. That will suck.

So I saw Toys R Us has this for $40. Then cancelled my Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm preorder just in time to snag this up. I'll just trade in some games to snag SC. Excited to see what all the fuss is about.

Volvo, if you liked Dragon Quest VIII, I don't see how you could not like this. I know you love Pokemon, and others say it is similar to that (I've only played a very little Pokemon, but I don't remember them being similar, found both fun) so I can't see how you wouldn't like the game. Oliver is just one of the best heroes in a long time.

My opinion's it is Level-5's take on Dragon Quest. To me, that is the best way to sum it up. I know they've made those games lately, but it is what you would have gotten if Level-5 made Dragon Quest V which had some monster catching.

I never played DQVIII, but I loved DQV so that makes me happy.

Awesome. Ni no Kuni is fan-fucking-tastic. It's the console Pokemon RPG people have been yelling about since 1998.

Damn, couldn't get a copy. Oh well, not like I have the time for a massive RPG like this anyways right now. I'll be on the lookout for another deal though.

It took me a little under 2hrs to complete the alchemy quest using a slightly modified version of the strategy I mentioned previously. Too bad farming a golden draggle is not going so smoothly. Makes it sooo much easier since I can just run my ps3 while working on my laptop. Less frustrating when playing for 10min at a time.

I don't think that's the one. It's a mission that I believe is unlocked after you beat the game. I have to find something in the ivory tower.

The quest I am referring to is post game. You have to create 2 weps for a guy in a cave. The materials are from golden mobs and low drop rate. It was basically my final task. It completed my merit cards and the wizards companion. A lot of forum posts claim it ruins the game since it's almost impossible if you don't have a good strategy. That's why I thought you were thinking of the quest.

*edit* We are talking about the same quest. I can pm or post here the strategy in detail. It is a little bit of grinding, but pretty simple once you set your party and routine up straight.

Maybe it is that one, but the name of it didn't ring a bell. I'll fire up the game and give it a gander and see if it is the one. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I'd love the strategy for it. It seems like it could be a bitch and I'd like to get all of the merit awards.

*edit* Since two axes need to be made, should I do a complete walkthrough or only for the second part? Materials for first axe are easy to farm but difficult to explain. Materials on second are difficult to farm and easy to explain.

I ask because a complete walkthrough requires effort. Which I don't mind, but i'd rather just half-ass it and do the second axe. I don't work this week so either is cool.

Walkthrough For Second Recipe Of Post Game Alchemy Task

Pretty much spoiler free-

First things first; Ditch all familiars for Swaine, Esther and your fourth member(put them in the familiar retreat). Set everyone's battle tactics to "Don't Do Anything". Your party should look as follows:

Oliver- Casteroceras (or any high level familiar that can one-shot a group of mobs. War Cry + Earsplitter on my Cas can one-shot any group of mobs quickly.) and any two random familiars you like or want to level.

Everyone else- Nothing.

Now that that's good, outfit all of your human main characters with their least powerful weapons and nothing else unless you have Medal of Impunity. Time to farm.

Scroll of Truth

Go to the last save point in Tombstone Trail and save. From there, make your way back to the cave and stop at the first fork; This is your farming zone. There will be a mob at the fork and another at the dead-end path of the fork(the path that takes you across a bridge to a chest. Very short path). Keep fighting these mobs for random encounters with Honky Tonker. This mob will appear in their parties during battle or on the overworld map. I shouldn't have to mention this but, use "Veil" if a mob starts to run as it will stop the mob and you can then proceed to initiate battle.

Once you start a battle that includes Honky Tonker, choose Oliver and hit [square] for "All-Out Defense]. Now cast "Pulse" on every mob EXCEPT Honky Tonker. This is your best chance for a Golden Glim. When a Golden Glim appears switch to Swaine and use his "Light Fingers" special move ,after grabbing said glim, on Honky Tonker. This is guaranteed 100% to nab a Scroll of Truth.

Should you (sadly) not get a Golden Glim, let Honky Tonker use his "Love" spell a few times and then have Swaine use "Mugshot" and pray. There's also a chance you will get a scroll as a post-battle reward.

Kalaidestone

Everything mentioned above applies here, just in a different zone and a different familiar.

Go to the final save point in Glittering Grotto. From here you want to make a complete circle ,using the hidden wall passage, killing every mob you come across. The mob you are wanting to steal from is Golden Draggle. Using the same strategy as you used for Honky Tonker, you should have your 5 stones well within an hour. Don't forget to steal from Sasquish as well since he carries a Dragonstooth(?) ring that is a material for a few other recipes.

I tried to be as clear as possible without spoiling any story points for anyone else reading this. I've only to tame a few dozen familiars for platinum, so I can help with any other trophy questions if needed. This really sucked to type out.

Thanks. You can also get the kaleidestone in Ivory Tower from the Honky Tonkers there. I might attempt it there just because you can fight that one enemy that is worth 27,000 xp. Thanks for the tips. How long did it take you to get all the parts?

It took me just under 2 hours for the scrolls and stones using the method I posted. I started with trying the Ivory Tower but it was not worth the time since I was there just for the scrolls and not using Tokotocold(or whatever) for grinding xp.

Almost got that platinum pspiddy? Anyone else? I'm at 52% and I think I'm going to stop there. At least I made half-way!

I think I enjoyed the game the most doing all those post-endgame hunts though.

I'm not sure of my %. I do plan on getting the plaintum though. Doing just really long things like 250 familiars are the ones I'm looking forward to the least.

I'm still 30 some-odd mobs away from platinum. I had to take a break since it was affecting my productivity as a worthwhile human being. I WILL knock it out, but 3 days straight of doing nothing but playing a video game had me re-evaluate my priorities ;P

Been playing this in 2-4 hour chunks since it came in from Gamefly Tuesday. I'm really digging it. I agree with most of the responses here (and I say most because I've skimmed, avoiding spoilers) and I want the soundtrack when its available.

Right now, I'm at Al Mamoon, running errands and grinding a little before I hit The Temple of Trials. It feels pretty cool to get a companion but right now I'm hoping that the battle system doesn't feel too cumbersome, especially in boss fights. I had to really pay attention while fighting Rusty's Nightmare so I hope this is easier with more than one leader to manage. Anyone else have a problem like this early on?

I rarely switched between characters. I was almost always pro Oliver, and I only ever really resorted to him when people needed to heal. The thing that will annoy you the most is how fast everyone uses their MP even though you set it to them rarely using it. Idiots couldn't get enough of their spell casting.

You're not alone, avid. The A.I. of any given party member will be the bane of your gaming experience. If you are having any troubles, just go with Ollie and kite bosses.

*not sure if "kite" is still used as gaming vernacular. What it means is tanking a boss by running away from it keeping the other party members out of harm's way.

I set Esther to be a healer, but she was shitty at it. I had to switch to Ollie all of the time, especially towards the end of the game.

I hear you there. I was playing it 5-6 hours straight, staying up pretty much all night for 3 days until I finally realized I have to spend my time on other things. Such as getting to bed at a decent time!
