Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
Maybe because cyborg ninjas, bipedal tanks that launch nukes, and cloned soldiers made people see it as a sci-fy series so when it introduced more of those elements, people who actually like sci-fy thought "Well that makes sense." That is until they introduced those stupid explanations.

MGS had some weird stuff, but nothing too weird or out there. With each game he just gets weirder and weirder.

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
MGS is science fiction in the same way something like Neuromancer is science fiction. There is science in there somewhere but it's far out there...well, MGS more so than Neuromancer.
I agree, the less explanation the better. I don't need to know WHY the fear crawls around on the ground and eats stuff, or WHY the four leged battle mech could actually work just...fucking, I want to fight it.

Could be an elaborate ruse knowing Kojima but common...DAVID HAYTER...DAVID FUCKING HAYTER.
So is no one else upset by this?

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
I'm really upset if it remains to be true.
That said...it isn't Snake, it's Big Boss. And they may be clones but I always felt it was kind of weird that Snake and Big Boss had the exact same voice considering liquid and solidus were clones as well.

Not having Hayter is disappointing but I cant really say it upsets me. Kojima chose to go in a different direction and I trust he has his reasons.
Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
To be honest I think he kind of screwed up making Hayter Big Boss in MGS3...but the MGS fan inside of me cries.

I know people don't like it, but honestly I'm perfectly fine with it. It makes sense to me cause.
- Spoiler:
- Hayter didn't voice old Big Boss in MGS4

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
I know...but I literally forget it happened. It was so stupid my mind kind of shut it out.
- Spoiler:
- I remember me and my friend who I was working with at the time were playing MGS4 at the same time. And I remember saying to him one night "if they come out at the end with something retarded like 'Big Boss was alive the whole time!' I'm going to be pissed". Then...sure enough, that night.

Not sure if I see his mindset on this...specifically, his attitude that his designs will MAKE people cosplay. And that people are just itching to cosplay as MGSV characters if only people could be leaked the new "more erotic" designs.
Just...write good, compelling characters and people WILL cosplay as them. It's kind of doing things backwards

Honestly it just sounds like Kojima is trying to fuck with people, again, and he's getting the press involved too which is hilarious.
Here's an image he's been passing around its apparently a character in MGSV

I stopped questioning the practicality of combat outfits after Mass Effect 2.

Yeah, but at the end of the day if that ends up being the actual character design he can "fuck with us" all he wants, it's still pretty bad.

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
I love all Metal Gear Solid games, but I wish he'd go back to the simplicity of the original MGS game. The only real bizarre villain was Psycho Mantis, and to a certain degree Cyborg Ninja. Each new game gets crazier and crazier, and that stuff really annoys me.
The first one didn't have anything crazy with the story, it was a believable scenario with believable characters. Guns were normal. Everything was simple about the game, yet surprisingly deep. Now he's got characters that turn into swarms of bees, characters that bleed white, hands being transplanted to other people and carrying personalities. He's getting too wrapped up in the science fiction. He's got Zone of Enders for that shit.

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
I love MGS's goofiness personally. It isn't always done well (Ocelot's hand and anything involving nanomachines comes to mind), but I love when something takes place in a modern day setting, then some weird shit pops out of nowhere and everyone just accepts it. Guys who read minds, control bees and perform photosynthesis? Yeah, they exist, now kick their asses. I have Splinter Cell or Deus Ex for a more grounded stealth game, so if chasing a fat guy on roller skates means I get to battle a guy who has electric powers, I am willing to make that sacrifice.

I make the sacrifice because the games are great, but I wish I didn't have to.

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
I'm with Bret, MGS was cool because the wackiness was present just played down and most importantly not explained. Psycho mantis was pyschic...cuz magic and shit. Which is how I prefer my paranormal.

Re: Metal Gear Series Discussion
Yeah...it's rare (at least, in the websites/magazines I've seen) to see game interviewers really ask interesting/hard questions. I can think of scores of interviews about movies and music that I've though "wow...that's a hell of a question" but not so much with games. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong websites. A lot of game journalists (not all, I know) tend to just come across in their work as fanboys and it kind of annoys me.

Remind me why Kojima is to be paid attention to when he is a writer or movie maker and not a gamemaker?
Because when he occasionally remembers that he is infact making a video game he pulls some absolutely crazy shit that tops 90% of other video games alone. Plus the stuff he posts on Twitter is pretty amusing.
And spoilers, games journalism is shit. Of course there's no difficult questions, wouldn't want to upset the publisher and not get that early review copy after all!
