Re: Next Gen Consoles
What on earth were you doing with those PS2s Kay? That's kind of impressive..
My first PS2 died but my slim one still works now, and other than that I've only had a launch PSP stop working and of course the 360. That doesn't seem like a lot of hardware problems to me so I'm not too worried about that.
Oh and woo, Microsoft announcement on May 21! I'm at least curious to see what they have in store.

My original PS2 is still going. A system had never died on me before this gen with both my 360 and PS3. I did have to get my DS Lite repaired. I had one of the first ones with the hinge issue.
Re: Next Gen Consoles
I think Halo 5 will be announced with it to get people excited for the long term (no way it's coming this year) with something announced supposed to be its killer app at launch, but will probably be like Perfect Dark Zero, and a new IP they'll try to make out to be the next new thing. And more Fable. Because for some reason they think Fable deserves to get a lot of sequels.

Maybe a Fable spin-off where you play as a dog....actually I would probably want to play that.

Hahaha, I wish I had more jokes but I don't remember anything else about the series to make fun of. Except STDs, do dogs get STDs?

Re: Next Gen Consoles
I'm guessing they announce Alan Wake 2. Remedy has been hinting at a reveal this year. At some point it should be announced if not here.

My cousin went through 3 of them. Which was awkward because everytime I came over, they had a different one of a different size. First one was was one of those first models, the second one was a slim one, and the third one was this really small one. He had to play the system upside down though. That's probably why I never wanted a PS2, I mean it's a great system but the hardware failure rate was what put me off.

I've only had one system died on me and it was my Gamecube. I played the heck out of it and it was probably my favorite system. Whenever we went to a trip, say to some distant relatives, I'd take the Gamecube and a handful of choice games with me. It was so portable for a home console. I even bought one of those portable console tv thingy's that attached to the top, that way we didn't need to occupy a tv. I even took it to Mexico twice and it was really sturdy, it survived a long car trip over there and the second time on a bus.
I had a tear on my eye the day it finally stopped working, that was a pretty sad moment for me. Which was strange because I really take good care of my systems. Although my N64 is older, it actually works just like the day I took it out of the box.

I went through 6 PS2's and 2 Gamecubes that gen. Only had one 360 die on me, and a busted psp this gen.

Dayum. I remember the launch of the PS2 was a mess. Same as PS3. Sony can't launch their consoles worth shit.

Re: Next Gen Consoles
My launch model actually lasted for long time till like 06, though to be fair it was only a DVD player most of the time I had it, and my family's so not technically mine. It's the slims i had all the problems with they just kept conking out on me, but by that time i was really into the games the PS2 had to offer so i kept buying them.
Re: Next Gen Consoles
Yeah the PS2 was a treasure trove of content game-wise. I feel the DS is like that for me. I got mine RIGHT at the end of its run and I'm discovering all sorts of good shit for it. And for cheaper since I'm not buying it brand new (as in just-released...though I buy used too because $40 for some old DS game? Fuck that)

Re: Next Gen Consoles
I was onboard with the PS2 in 2001. I'd have gotten one sooner but they were hard to find, and I was still getting PS1 games.
What impressed me about the PS2 was its longevity. In 2001, I was buying Final Fantasy X, my first PS2 game (other than the Gran Turismo 3 A-spec that was bundled with mine ), and in 2010, I was picking up my pre-ordered Sakura Wars for PS2.
My prediction for the Xbox reveal event: the Xbox will crash. Microsoft has had quite a few products completely take a shit on them during their unveiling.

What do you guys think about the assertion that this console generation may be the last (at least in the home console form that we know now)

Grain of salt. It's possible, given the rising costs of the market. But they've been predicting the demise of console video gaming nonstop since 1976.

I loved that about the Gamecube too. Anytime I've brought a PS2 or PS3 to a friend's house I would wrap it up in like two blankets. The Gamecube felt like you could toss it down a hill and it would still be fine. And the system was all basically great local mp games. I used to bring it everywhere, even on trips and stuff. Also if it broke you wouldn't really care because you could just pull out the memory card and buy another.
I think this generation will be the last console as we know it. Consoles turning into computers, televisions turning into computers, cell phones turning into computers. The lines are becoming so blurred.
Also Nintendo is skipping E3. Looks like they're throwing in the towel on the WiiU already... a couple months after everyone else in the industry had already given up on that system.

It's doing alright over here, but even then it's alright, not great. I don't think it's because it's a horrible console but they completely failed to market it as a NEW CONSOLE and not an attachment to the Wii. I mean hell, the NAME doesn't help.

Re: Next Gen Consoles
I think it has less to do with Nintendo giving up and more about them wanting to use Nintendo Direct instead. If that recent one is any indication, people will make a big deal about it like they do with their E3 announcements, so if they're getting the buzz and give it directly to the customers rather than E3 where it has to be reported by a website who can add whatever they want, why wouldn't they pick that over E3?

Re: Next Gen Consoles
Because you have to make a showing at E3, that why.
Anything they show at E3 would likely get massively overshadowed by the next gen system annoucements, so why waste any good material there, right. Better to control the release and timing of your annoucements. Hence Sony's presentation and Microsofts' 20 days before E3.
But you still have to make some effort. It's the biggest gaming conference in the world. It sends a huge message that one year into the life cycle of your console you're saying, fuck it, let the PS4 and 720 take the spotlight. The Wii was still fighting to remain relevant thoroughout its life cycle, even in the face of all the awesome 360 and PS3 titles over the last few years. They never said, "Well New Super Extra Super Mario 2D Rehash isn't going to compare much against the UC3, ME3 and Halo 4 annoucement... so let's just annouce it some other time when people are bored."
The 360 didn't mail it in and not show up the year the PS3 and Wii were announced.

Re: Next Gen Consoles
Uh yeah I'm not all that negative over Nintendo not having a press conference this year. It has nothing to do with the Wii U underperforming, that's just silly. It has games coming, and the 3DS is absolutely thriving and they want to show that off. Nintendo will still be present at E3 with games on the show floor and the press conference will simply be replaced by a Nintendo Direct. Yeah, it's disappointing, but lets face it, E3 isn't what it used to be. As much as I look forward to it each year it's nothing but information we already knew thanks to the Internet.
I will miss the Reggie memes though
