Re: Now Playing
Yeah the go hit a switch and come back style mission objectives was definitely the thing that bugged me most about Dead Space. Really liked it though. I still haven't finished number 2. Sort of got away from me.
Re: Now Playing
The hit the switch and come back was the reason DS bored me. It was like they had some amazing controls and mechanics built around the most boring game imaginable. 2 was still awesome.

Re: Now Playing
It is probably the worst game I've ever played for not having any sort of structured or compelling progression. I hit chapter four and, for the life of me, I couldn't remember what happened in the seven chapters before he goes to the planet.
Playing DS again I realized how much was lost tension and atmosphere wise in DS2. But they are still close to equal in my mind just because DS2 had an interesting story and progression and an equally interesting but different environment.
Also the guns in Dead Space rock.

Got a copy of Grid 2 to review yesterday. Really solid racer for anyone interested in an arcadey racing game. Great mechanics, a lot of areas all around the world, great graphics to show them off and just enough variety.

Really enjoying The Witcher 2 but it has some of the worst sound mixing ever. It's like "Are you trying to have a calm conversation? Interesting. LET'S BLAST THE TOWN MUSIC! DANUHNUH NUHWEEDLYWEEDLY WEEEEEEEEE!"

Re: Now Playing
I'm not sure where to put this and wasn't aware of this at launch, but Sly 4 sold better in its first month than any previous Sly game. Now obviously sales expectations this gen are different than last and it launched at $40 and other factors are involved, but I think this is a good sign for that game. And I didn't hear any bad news about Sanzaru afterwards like some other studios whose Sony games bombed. Hopefully they are at work on a sequel or another game of this ilk.
Re: Now Playing
It's good to know it did well. Â I thought Sony did a shockingly terrible job advertising it.

Jumped back into Ni No Kuni. I'm about 32 hours in now, doing errands and bounties and all the while catching up on podcasts I've missed out on during the past week (hard to listen to those during work hours in the summer).

A sign that I'm getting old: I get the dragon in Ni No Kuni and the first thought that comes to mind is Falcor from The Neverending Story.

People playing The Last of Us: worth the $60 new? Could I stand to wait until I go home for christmas and nab it (most likely) on sale?

I've been to 3 retail stores (Walmart, Best Buy, Target) in my area and there are no available copies right now. So I picked up Bioshock Infinite from Best Buy for $40 instead.

I'd need to import it unfortunately, so that's the main reason why I asked

Re: Now Playing
I try my best not to use a guide when I play through a game for the first time, but I don't necessarily consider that cheating. Second playthroughs (especially of RPG) I'll have the guide open and just go for everything.
But sometimes, especially in old games, the design choices are just obtuse and hard to understand. Then there's stuff like the stupid shit in Persona 4 (do this conversation EXACTLY right or you get the bad ending and have to play through a whole month of gameplay to try again bullshit) that fuck it...guide it up.

Re: Now Playing
I got the good ending in P4 on my first try though. The conversation options seemed pretty obvious to me. Also you can just reload your last save.
Re: Now Playing
I never used guidebooks, but that doesn't mean I haven't before. I used them when I didn't have a computer at the time. Sometimes I'd go to the store and get a guidebook and try to remember as much as possible about something. Well that was a long time ago, I don't have all of my guidebooks with me but I have most of them.
I don't use guidebooks anymore, I seem to do just fine without them. Not sure if games are becoming easier or that I'm just better at them than I was a long time ago. The only time I look something up on the web is for a glitch that might fuck up your save or does something to your save file.
Also, I know were everything is on Twilight Princess without using a guidebook. I try not to but I just have the urge to collect everything in a Zelda game, or a game with pointless trinkets. I blame Rare.

Re: Now Playing
Yeah but when I'm role playing I answer how I would answer, but it wasn't the perfect one they wanted. Plus, reloading your save in persona means playing through a few days worth of social links/dungeon crawling which could be an hour+ of gameplay. And no skippign conversation either.

Re: Now Playing
Fair enough, in Persona I answer the way people want me to answer. P4G did add a fast forward feature which is a godsend.
Re: Now Playing
Well, I just remember playing through it, my friend was sitting next tome. Then bad ending happened and we were both shocked. So it wasn't JUST my stupidity on show.

Re: Now Playing
As far as I can remember I've never used a guide with the exception of fighting and racing games where I will often look up how to unlock stuff. Those I usually more get to play with friends, so just like to unlock stuff for that to make it more fun with them and don't care much for the accomplishment angle or anything. I will admit there are a few games I just got eternally stuck on and never finished because I'm too stubborn to peek at a guide.
Re: Now Playing
I guess I'm really unhardcore about games. If it's a puzzle I refuse to look it up but if it's like "...Who the fuck do I talk to?!" I'm pretty quick to look. You guys are a lot better about it than me...

Re: Now Playing
It's impossible to get that conversation in P4 right without a guide. Even after using a guide it took me 3 tries because one of the dialog options I was told to use didn't exist, but there were two options that basically meant the same thing. That's the only major flaw in that game
