Games You Enjoyed By Playing Them Your Way
I don't know what made me think of this but I was just thinking back through some games I played that were fun because I played them with my own challenge/or my own goals in mind that were completely separate from the game's intent or design.
For example, me and my friend used to play the multiplayer on one of the PS2 Tenchu games. The goal I think was to stealth kill more guys than the other player but we'd intentionally get caught and get everyone to chase us to the same area which would cause the game engine to slow to a crawl and proceed to have a stupid and ridiculous slow motion battle.
Another example, when playing Halo 2 in LAN we devised a game mode on a map where we'd have only shotguns and defend a tower. The game wasn't built to be played this way but we all stuck to the rules and it was super enjoyable.
So what are some ways you've played games (in either single or multiplayer) that were awesome and fun but not necessarily what the game developers had in mind?

Only thing I can think of at the moment is me, my brother and some friends were passing the controller messing around in GTAV. So we decided to have a competition for who could punch the most random people before being arrested or killed. The scoring system was pretty suspect. Like sometimes you'd get bonus points for it being a paramedic or because you knocked someone's hat off, but it was fun.

In Driv-three-r I used to create little scenarios where I'd have to escape to some special area without dying. It was especially fun if I used one of the secret modes in Miami or Nice.
In Trackmania a friend of mine used to create these really simple but technical flat tracks and we'd play hotseat on them. They worked so well because anyone could play them, but just when we thought we'd mastered it someone would figure out a new way to do it and cut off 3 seconds from their time

During Halo LAN parties in college, my friends and I once reduced the weapons only to the pistol and played by this rule: melee hits only.

I've definitely done some melee or grenade only multiplayer battles.

In Timesplitters we had custom weapons which were only real guns (I hate sic-fi guns). We'd also put the 4 players name into a hat, and one that said Wild. If your name was drawn first and you pulled a wild card, you got to pick your partner and the level. If no wild card, then the second name was your partner. First team to 20 kills won.
In Timesplitters 2 we really liked a map called Chasm, and we'd set that one to snipers only.
This above stuff is really all I can think of.
