A Good Day To Die Hard:
It's a good action movie. Not a good Die Hard movie. I will say, however, that it's a bit more enjoyable than Live Free or Die Hard was - and that's mostly because A Good Day has 100% less Kevin Smith.
3 out of 5 Yippie-Kie-Yays.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I watched Dredd the other day and thought it was absolutely awesome. So much violence. I went in thinking it was going to be the same story as the Stallone version but this was something completely different with its own style and story.
It pisses me off that when it was in theaters they only advertised it as "Dredd 3D", and it completely tanked at the box office. I would've loved to seen a seqeul.

Dredd had a shitty marketing campaign but it was a lot of fun. A bigger deal should've been made out of the 3D version because its one of the best 3D films I've ever seen.

I could see that with all the slo-mo scenes. But anything with 3D thrown into the title automatically makes me think its a shitty movie.

I've heard nothing but good things about Dredd, but the marketing did nothing to announce to people that it had nothing to do with the Sly version. I had so many friends who thought it was a sequel or prequel. I haven't seen it, but I knew better. I just assumed it was terrible. Glad to hear I was wrong.

The slo-mo benefited from the 3D, yes, but the film took full advantage of 3D for the sets, the action scenes and those crazy-ass telepathy sequences. The scene with the gatling gun was a standout.

Argo wouldn't be my first choice for best picture (Django all the way), but better than last year when The Artist won.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
Well now I really need to see Argo. I honestly didn't see many of the movies nominated this year. I also want to see Life of Pi. The clips of that they showed at the Oscars seemed really neat. I didn't know that movie was about blending what is real and isn't real. I thought it was just supposed to be some sort of weird dream thing. At least Django won for screenplay and Waltz won for supporting actor.

Waltz was so amazing in that movie. He deserved it just for the beginning and that shit he did with the sheriff alone.

Good to see Tarantino get noticed again but I really think he deserves a directing award more than anything.

If he didn't get one for Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, he never will.

I feel like what Tarantino does really can't be categorized. I mean, he does EVERYTHING in his movies. I read somewhere the Django script would have ran somewhere around 5 or 6 hours and he had to cut scenes and characters and even merge characters together due to time or schedule constraints. So as long as he's getting recognized for something. I mean, Django was so creative and such a fun movie. Out of all these films that were nominated tonight, that's the one I'm going to remember 25-30 years from now. And isn't that the important part?

You'd think so, but throw in something "based on a true story"or made by people who like to smell their own farts and the people there go crazy over it.

For one thing, it negates the Oscars. Whether a film gets an award or not shouldn't affect how you feel about it. My favorite film of last year was Cloud Atlas and the Academy ignored it; it changes nothing.
The Django script was a good read. I read somewhere that his first cut ran 5 hours. I'd like to see that, as well as the Kill Bill: Whole Bloody Affair if that ever makes it to home video.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I was bummed to see that Walton Goggins' (Boyd Crowder from Justified) lines got cut from that theatrical versions of the movie. Apparently he was intended to be a more featured character but he was more of a lackey. I really love him in Justified and I hope to see what they cut some day.
The Oscars are what they are. I thought it was really cool for Jennifer Lawrence to win for best actress last night. I think she's great. But on the flip side seeing Daniel Day Lewis win was so lame. So it's about as relevant as you want to make it. And I don't think any of the films nominated for best picture were bad, or undeserving. It's impossible to recognize everything.

As much as I love Django, I think Inglorious Bastards was slightly better but much like the year Pulp Fiction came out, that was a tough year for films. Surprised he stood out this year.
I feel Denzel's performance got overlooked, as well the entire Flight film but there were a lot of great films this year.
How did everyone feel about Seth Macfarlene hosting? I thought he was great.

Man, I'm sad I didn't get to make this thread myself (Timberwolf from Playstation by the way).
The oscars are more interesting to observe trends of the industry and hear a few titles of movies that are good that you might not have heard of. The winners tend not to matter in the long run.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I liked this year Oscar's.
Even though I need to catch up on many movies that are already released where I live, I liked the variety of the winners and although I was going for Django for Best Picture (and not giving him a director nom was bafling), i'm glad it got for screenplay and even then, Argo was also a pretty great choice (again, i'm also baffled that Ben Affleck also didn't get director nomination).
My only complain would be with Brave winning for animated film. Okay, I really liked the film, but I don't think it's as magnificent as past Pixar films like Wall-E or Toy Story, it's certainly not that original and part of the award was because it was Pixar. If you ask me, I would have gone with Ralph, but then again, I haven't seen the other three films.

It took a long time for Scorsese to win an Oscar - and when he did, it was for The Departed, long after choices that were no-brainers, like Taxi Driver or (of all of the options) Goodfellas.b.b.hagen wrote:If he didn't get one for Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, he never will.
Also, Christoph Waltz is astoundingly terrific. For me, he was the best part of Django. So great...

Brave wasn't even close for best animated. Should have gone to Paranorman.

Interestingly Scorsese always said he wasglad he didn't win the oscar when he was young because it pushed him to work harder. Just made me think of that...

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
Watched today at my spanish class (literature and closest to english class to those on the US) Johnny Got His Gun.
I don't think it's a very known film (don't know about the book), but I think some might know this film for having clips of the movie inserted on the music video for Metallica's One (fitting as the song was based on the book).
The movie was very impressive. You really felt what the character was going through and it uses the trope And I Must Scream effectivly.
Just be carefull. It's very depressing stuff.

Agreed. The way they used clips in that music video was pretty awesome too. Always wondered where it came from.

I remember looking it up after watching the video on youtube once. Metallica actually had the buy the rights to the movie because they weren't allowed to use the scenes at first.
Watched Ghostbusters today for the first time in a while. So that was awesome.
