Re: Chat Thread
I applied to the county. They're hiring like crazy right now with a bunch of people retiring now, figure that's my best shot to get my foot in. My major's definitely helping in that regard too.

Re: Chat Thread
Tonight was really fun at work for a whole hour i was the only register open in the entire store. Doing orders of 90+ items on an express lane. I guess i should feel proud since im still relatively new (and not even a cashier) and they trust me to handle that, but im also terrified cause that means it might happen again.
A bunch of cashiers called in sick and we're short on them anyways and i guess i've really impressed the CSMs and they rely on me for backup a lot, but ugh... sometimes its too much.

Pretty proud of myself, passed Laguna Beach Police's written test, which requires a much higher score than most the other departments. Doubt I'll get in since I'm already so far with LA Sheriffs and things look good there, but still was a nice confidence boost.

Congrats to you Greenie.
With pspiddy posting, it feels like the third Lord of the Rings movie.
For those that do not know, I'm referencing the title "Return of the King".

Re: Chat Thread
So, I need advice guys. I have an interview with Laguna Beach Police on Wednesday and if I move on, I have to drop everything I have done with LA Sheriffs to show I am committed to them and I'm having a really hard time deciding on a side.
With LA Sheriffs, I have much better odds since they're hiring a lot of people all the time and my best friend's dad who worked there is helping me out. I'm really confident in getting in there.
But on the other hand, Laguna Beach is my favorite place ever. My family lives there and I love just wandering around. Patrolling that area and helping anyone when they need it sounds like a dream job. But they're hiring three positions for sure, six if I'm really lucky. Fifty people were there for physical testing, but I hear they cut a lot after interviews.
I'm just not sure. Go with the near sure thing and have a job I enjoy or take a risk and have a perfect job if I'm successful. This is really the toughest choice I've ever had to make in my life.

How big is the risk? In terms of: if you go to this interview (which, how long is it?) does it COMPLETELY ruin things with the Sheriffs? I mean to a certain extent if they haven't hired you or are not actively in the process you're not necessarily betraying them by taking an interview somewhere else.
Given, I don't know the etiquette of industry. Anyway, let me know.

Re: Chat Thread
It sounds like you can at least go to the interview this week without dropping the Sheriff's progress? So you can at least see how you do in the interview before deciding?
Re: Chat Thread
Yeah, that may have a huge impact on how it goes. Just got done with a jail tour for the sheriffs. Quite the experience.

Re: Chat Thread
Well then I'd say do the interview. It might not go perfectly, and if it does we can renew the debate.

Re: Chat Thread
Got annoyed with my company always forcing me out to sub assignments last minute. It's my 2nd to last day and I managed to weasel 4.5 hours of OT pay for a 90 minute class. Not bad, I'd say, not bad.

Welp, I've got a month to myself to enjoy my final time in Japan, as well as a couple of creative jobs both official and unofficial in that time. Then in March my Dad's coming for a couple of weeks. THen I have 10 days to scream/panic/cry and say bye to friends and then I'm back to America. It will go by very quick.

Re: Chat Thread
today at work a woman questioned my ability to do my job because a plastic bag tore. I yelled back at her to which she went to customer service and complained. That shit makes me angry. I mean nothing actually happened to me i was just told it happens my frustration is completely understandable, and to not let it get to me.
,but you know i put way more effort into that job then i should and goddammit being insulted like that just strikes a nerve

Re: Chat Thread
It is a skill in customer service to just be able to filter that stuff out, and it definitely takes time. =/

I mean yeah its gonna happen, and i'll probably grow thicker skin eventually but it kind of stings at first.
Don't tell anyone but i was holding back tears for a while. I'm still not completely sure why but i care about my job and the work that i do.
but bleh some people suck

Re: Chat Thread
You care because you're a decent human being who tries no matter what job they do. It's not a bad thing, and too many people put no effort into their job because it's not their dream job and it's a crap attitude. So you should be happy that you care, but don't fret because you try hard at your job, just know that when someone explodes at you it probably isn't your fault and people just go on weird power trips at service people.

Re: Chat Thread
i just think if youre gonna have a job you should actually put the effort into it. it makes the job less of a chore even if you are doing more work than you have to.
but thanks man i think ive calmed down hopefully no idiots like this again today, hopefully ill be in my dept and not up front

Re: Chat Thread
LA Sheriffs told me I'm not going to continue. Haven't heard back from Laguna either. Kind of in the tank. Having so much trouble finding any kind of work right now.

Didn't say, but I've been turned down other departments who said they wanted someone working full time to show they can maintain a steady job. Only problem is everywhere hiring full time wants prior experience.

Re: Chat Thread
Even the police are doing those hiring shenanigans =/. I didn't reckon you'd get the same problems as all other new graduates going into the police. But hey, doesn't mean you can't try again in a while. Sucks you couldn't get the job you wanted out of the gate though.

Yeah, was hoping to get in the academy straight away. Maybe I'll have luck with Laguna though, I'd 100% Assassin's Creed 3 while Big Bang Theory is on another TV sitting between a brony and a gamergator for that job.

Re: Chat Thread
Fingers crossed. But again, if you don't get it, it means you work around it, you get money you get job experience and you go again. So it's more a delay then a stop, worst case scenario.

Honestly I'm thinking a couple years of military service may be my best course of action. We'll see what happens though.
