Re: General TV Show Discussion
I've said this before, but I thought True Detective was a 10/10 until it went to strictly present day during the last two episodes. Then it was still good, but there was a clear dip in quality despite how awesome the scenes in Carcosa were. I don't like number grades, but the show was not perfect.
Re: General TV Show Discussion
Wilfred series finale was actually pretty damn great. It could have easily been something really stupid (which is where I thought they'd go), but it was really smartly done with a great message on how to live your life and find happiness. I'd recommend the show to anyone who hasn't watched it yet.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
In my own numerical system 10/10 is something without flaws, at all. So 7.5 is still pretty damn good. I would happily buy that show and watch it again. But it definitely had a few weak link moments and it also had some awesome moments (that long take in episode 4...fuck yeah).
But yeah, for me 7.5 is a solid recommendation.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I was really sad as I approached the last two episodes because I remember Trip and possibly more that the last two episodes didn't live up to the rest. When I watched them though I was relieved to find out that they were just as good as the rest in my own opinion. I think the more I go back and watch the show the more I'll appreciate it. Matty Mc put in one hell of a performance.
I love Rust.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I loved the first six episodes because they acted as a brilliant character study with a really interesting framing device that let you slowly unravel the different layers of Rust and Marty. The last two episodes turn it into a still well-done, but more straight forward crime show. I guess if you think the latter was as good as the former, then it never dropped in quality at all!
Re: General TV Show Discussion
The middle was my favorite (episode 3, 4, and 5), the last two my second favorite part, and the first 2 my least favorite (still great though). Since they kind of made it look like Rust might have been the killer at the end of 5, I was excited to see how he either was or wasn't.

Going to start getting back into Hell On Wheels. I liked the first two seasons but for some reason never watched the 3rd even though I had them all on the DVR. Now I'm watching it on Netflix and hopefully in 2 or 3 weeks I'll have them all watched and then I'll start watching the new ones that I have on the DVR.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I agree with Trip, especially on the 2nd to last episode. That said, I felt what they did with the last episode did bring it all together. The chase through the maze felt more character oriented than plot oriented if that makes sense.
The middle of the series was definitely the best though.

I still don't see what everyone liked about the chase through the maze, to be honest. It still felt like a generic cop show. But with twigs and a completely pointless hallucination. The best part of the finale was everything after that.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I just liked how it looked and sounded. Just purely on a filmmaking basis...it was cool. And the final room was creepy looking but not shown enough to really take it all in so it kind of danced in the imagination for a while.
The best part of the finale for me was Rust's final speech though, it's a hell of a piece of acting, that.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
Along with looking amazing I found the chase very thrilling to watch. I also was unsure who might live or die during that sequence which added a little to it which I think made it unlike the typical cop chase from Generic Cop Procedural #42.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
So far the Emmy's were right in rewarding True Detective best directing in a drama series.
Now they only have one more right to right, and that's Matthew McConaughey winning best actor in a drama series.

Bryan Cranston, you deserved this every year but this year. You got the farewell vote.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
Breaking Bad wins too many awards and is generally overrated if you ask me (despite the fact that it probably was the best show I watched this awards season.) They need to spread the love more. McConaughey definitely deserved it more
I mean I love Breaking Bad but everyone places it with The Sopranos and The Wire. It's like comparing the world's greatest bowl of KD to a delicious, perfect bowl of homemade Lasagna that never ends and you get paid to eat it

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I thought McConaughey was better than Cranston this year, but I can't get too up in arms. True Detective should be in the miniseries category since that is where other anthologies are (putting it in Drama didn't seem to work out for HBO either). Plus we should be complaining about Modern Family and Jim Parsons winning again instead.
Re: General TV Show Discussion
I think Parsons deserves the win. He is a great actor, and the writers of that show are always throwing difficult lines or situations for him to be apart of. Each and every episode he is consistently the funniest character on the show, and without him it would literally be nothing. From an acting standpoint, I think that's why he wins, and I personally think he deserves that. Modern Family, not so much.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
It isn't a Most Valuable Actor on a show award. And I really don't see what difficult material he has compared to others that were nominated or should have been nominated. Like more difficult material than Louis C.K.? Parsons is a good actor though I agree there. But there are just better performers in this category around TV.
Re: General TV Show Discussion
Jim Parsons has always come across to me as annoying in that show and both the actor and character feel like a poor man's Danny Pudi/Abed. But that means praising Community which is a big no-no if you're a "normal" person. Still, Brooklyn Nine-Nine had three actors who deserved it more in a more conventional comedy, so they're not even trying going by their own rules.
The only part of Modern Family which deserves a mention is Ty Burnell.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
There's just lines he pulls off that aren't the easiest lines to pull off, parts where they have him playing musical instruments I'm sure he isn't accustomed to (that instrument where you wave your hands around, I can't think of the name of it), and just other general difficult acting situations. Sometimes the episodes as a whole of Big Bang can be so bad, it might be easy to overlook how great Jim Parsons pulls off his character. I think it's partially given due to acting credentials, which I think he has more of than Louis, Ricky G., and I'm not really sure who else was up for the award.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
It wasn't a great batch of nominees this year (I would have went with Louis CK), but Parsons also beat Alec Baldwin three times. Jon Cryer also beat Alec Baldwin. Emmys!
Re: General TV Show Discussion
Jon Cryer sucks. The woman that won Best Actress in a comedy also sucks, she's from the show Mom, and that's just a horrible show.

I like the Big Bang Theory, it has moments of cheese, but overall the episodes are pretty great. Scenes with Sheldon and Penny are always really great, and Howard always makes me laugh.

I really can't stand BBT. Every time I've tried to watch it's given me a headache. Two and a Half Men sucks too, but at least I can make it through an episode. I have a lower opinion on the American public's taste, but beats the alternative

Re: General TV Show Discussion
I find BBT to be watchable middle of the road comedy. At times funny. At times pretty awful. Usually just average run of the mill CBS multi-cam. It is neither worthy of the ridiculous ratings it puts up or the scorn it seems to get on the internet. I assume the scorn is partly because its ratings are so high and it bugs people (which I kind of get when much better shows get cancelled all the time). But if it were barely staying on the air, I don't think people would make such a fuss.
Re: General TV Show Discussion
I think that's part of it, but also that most of the opinions we see are from the kind of people the show makes fun of.

Re: General TV Show Discussion
BBT is the school bully of comedies. There's occasionally some pretty funny jokes on it and I think Parsons does a decent job with his role, but sometimes it feels like it's just trying to make dumb people feel better about themselves by making smart people look like losers. But the one thing I really hate about that show is that female sheldon character.

I really dislike that show, though I probably cannot articulate why without watching a lot more of it which I'm not too keen to do.
