I love the IDEA of the last bit but they didn't foreshadow it very well, that's for sure. But I'm playing it now so I'll be curious see how it holds up this time around...

The orphanage scene was where it lost me, and it just went down hill from there imo. Honestly I thought it completely ruined Squall's character too.

It wasn't as bad as some other plot twists ive seen in RPGs (fucking Star Ocean 3) but that whole thing kind of ruined the game for me in the same way some of the others did. I can deal with some of its other weird plotlines (like NORG that shit was hilarious and random), but that orphanage part was just well as I said it wasnt as bad as SO3's plot twist and thats the best description i can give it.

On the other hand I don't like that it seems every character needs a deep troubled past to have a character arc.

Yeah but on the other hand that past and his character really didnt mesh to me. Did it have to be dark and troubled, no not really, but it should have been more than what it was. It made him seem more whiny than the badass he was set up to look like in the earlier parts.

I should replay it though I might be blinded by the sadness of Squall not being the man I wanted him to be, or something.

I'm not sure why what happened in Squall's past isn't a good enough reason for him being the way he was.

lol you know that does make sense cause uhm I know someone who was like that for years after somethings that happened with an ex, and well you know that was about the time she played FFVIII so uh....

She should replay it, but has 100% certainty she will still hate that orphanage scene, but maybe some other opinions will change. She also promises to stop referring to herself in the 3rd person.

You know it would make sense though that i hated Squall cause I related to him TOO MUCH during a time when i really didnt want to relate to anything. In any case its due a replay sometime, but fuck me my backlog is huge is and I keep replaying other shit.

Say what you want about FFVIII's plot holes (of which there are many) it captures the feeling of teen angst very very well.

Personally, I like the way Squall's past was handled. Well, aside from the orphanage cheat, anyway. He's my favorite Final Fantasy hero, oddly enough. For all its flaws, FFVIII remains one of my favorite games ever.

Final Fantasy VIII also had the bitching-est arrange album of its soundtrack. So good.

Thanks to this thread I started a new game of FFVIII. I still love it (except drawing magic ugh) and got to the dance scene. Squall is adorably bad at dancing ♡

Anyway, Squall is also probably my favorite main character in any FF. Personally I like it when I can relate to a character and well.. as a teen I was SO full of angst.. >_>

1. Vivi - He is just so adorable. I think it's a male. They always made jokes about Quina, but I never knew what Vivi was.
2. Cloud Strife - I think he's the coolest looking hero in the entire series.
3. Cid Highwind - He smokes, he swears, he flies airships.
4. Steiner - I love rusty.
5. Zidane - A cool thief main character. Liked his weapons as well.

That was a good interview with Mr. Kitase. FFVI was my first encounter with the series and it's always interesting seeing the nuts and bolts behind these games. I also remember the Ted Woolsey interview of the time where he talked about the problems he had working around Nintendo's content rules.

OMFG FFX looks friggin GORGEOUS on Vita! Also, was reading that you guys were talking about the lightning strikes; do either of you remember the timing? I thought there was a trick to it, like you keep a beat in your head and don't have to even look at the screen.

Lightning strikes every X seconds i dont know an exact number but it ALWAYS strikes exactly after so many seconds.
