Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I probably knew a while back when I was in love with those movies, but I can't remember anymore. It just felt like everyone from the first 2 movies didn't want to be there, and that it all felt like a big joke. It might just be due to the fact that the first two movies were so great, that maybe the third one just felt like a big let down.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
For a movie with quite a few legitimately pretty looking things in it...Immortals is one of the worst movies I've seen in recent memory. And it too has Superman leadboy as the protagonist. Coincidence?!

Only if you believe that Cavill is the worst thing in both films. Immortals' script is that film's biggest problem.

Haha, I was being facetious. The script was Immortal's problem hands down.

Henry Cavill was a fine actor, had no issues with his performance in Man of Steel.

I loved Amazing Spiderman 2 so apparently that means I'm a terrible person and everything wrong with movie audiences.

It was definitely long and there was a stretch between Electro confrontations where it felt its length a little but nowhere near to the same degree as ASM1. I'm glad I saw it in a theater though because the bits when he's Spidey are so much fun to watch on the big screen.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
My wife and I just watched Princess Mononoke for the first time and I thought it was OK. It felt like it went about 15 min too long. It would have benefited from a little bit of editing in that respect. The animation was pretty fantastic though, which is what I expected.
Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I hate it when movies get really preachy about the environment but I think Mononoke was Miyazaki's best (haven't seen the new one yet.) Followed closely by Spirited Away and then Porco Rosso.

Miyazaki was in a fairly dark frame of mind when he made it and it definitely shows. The pacing is definitely slower, more reminiscent of an old samurai film than his older stuff was.

Watched Dersu Uzala's blu ray version. Shame that Kurosawa's only 70mm film (to my knowledge) was so poorly maintained. Still a beautiful film, but the print's pretty beat up.

I thought ASM 2 was great also. Couldn't believe the rotten tomatoes score when I looked at it afterwards.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
Yeah, I could understand somewhere in the 60's, but 53%? Really? It feels like a lot of critics this to fail because they don't want to see all the movies it's leading up to. I mean, yeah, it is a cash grab from Sony, but I don't care as long as I enjoy watching it and I'm looking forward to 3, 4, Venom, and especially Sinister Six.

I feel the critics bash The Hobbit movies as well because they feel it's cash grab. They're not as good as LotR movies, but they're still great movies. Critics are assholes the majority of the time.

I think all of his movies are worthwhile. Laputa just wasn't as memorable to meKrubixcube wrote:Miyazaki was in a fairly dark frame of mind when he made it and it definitely shows. The pacing is definitely slower, more reminiscent of an old samurai film than his older stuff was.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
There's a difference between saying something sucks because it's a cash grab and something's flawed because it's a cash grab. Like, I have zero interest in The Hobbit because they wanted to tie it into LOTR more to milk three movies out of it when I just want to see what was in the book. Likewise, ASM2 has some moments you can tell only exist to show what they have planned for the future, but it's still a really fun movie.

Man, I haven't seen Dersu Uzala since I was a teenager. I recall that it's fantastic and overlooked in his filmography. Bummer about the blu-ray transfer.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I still haven't seen ASM2 but I think what really irks critics is the tendency for movies of its kind to keep leaving backdoors to future films instead of telling self-contained stories. Its where most of the ire for sequels, remakes or reboots come from. The best of the Marvel films have managed to make self-contained stories and hide the links to sequels a lot better. Right now, we're in a post-Captain-America-2 world and that's the bar that everyone seems to be measuring with now.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
Yeah...I would fall into the camp of saying The Hobbit was flawed on account of its cash grab. There was no need to stretch a 300 page book into 3 movies, and this decision just permeates everything. The characters are unfocused and in the dwarve's cases, interchangeable, the plot moves at a snail's pace. And I guess for me, the story and pacing is way more important than "getting lost in a world". If I want to get lost in the world, I'll read the books...or play Skyrim or something.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
I've found the Hobbit films to be quite good so far. Sure, they were made on their bankability but no one is screwing around when it comes to their production and execution. I see the films separate from the book and as Jackson's swan song for this universe because, after this third film, this is it. There's nothing else to say and no one has the movie rights to anything else in Tolkien's books.

I watched If... and I liked it very much! Can't say I know enough general English history to connect all the dots but definitely left a strong impression.

Saw Inside Lleywn Davis recently. Like American Hustle it was a tad overrated but still entertaining. Excellent original folk music songs.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently
Casually watching the new Hobbit film it strikes me how much we let violence...pretty meaningless violence really get a pass in film but sex and other things are still huge no-no's.
So PG-13...a speaking character is decapitated, his head his kicked down some stairs and his body jerks and spasms as the protagonist steps on it to stop the movement. But show a boob or some gay people kissing and people LOSE THEIR SHIT.
