Firefly Discussion
I'm on board as well as pspiddy and Trip, but starting soon we'll be watching the entire series and the movie as well. There's also 2 graphic novels out and 6 new comics that haven't been released as a graphic novel that I'd love to discuss as well. Come one, come all, and stay Shiny my Browncoat friends!

Re: Firefly Discussion
Moving this over here. I will probably watch the first episode tomorrow, but if you want to start tonight and begin discussion you can, I will just hop in here when I've watched. I have seen the first few episodes, but it has been a long while. I never got all the way through though.
Re: Firefly Discussion
I remember Trip saying he watched the first few episodes but couldn't get into it. Hopefully that changes this time around. Also, when I was looking up that weird email I got from that guy on 1up I saw a message from Trip saying he was going to watch the first season of Buffy because his brother was a big fan. Good ol' 1up!

Re: Firefly Discussion
I have yet to be able to get into any Whedon show. I think it is your duty to help change that Bret.
Re: Firefly Discussion
Buffy's hard to get into if you watch it today. It hasn't aged well because of all of the effects used, but the core story that is there is a great story as well as the characters. Also, the first season is by far the worst, but you can't just skip it because it is kind of important. The only good episode from it is the season finale, and even then every other season finale after it is better.
Firefly is a great show, Fox really fucked up by airing it on a Friday night. If Firefly had as many seasons as Buffy I think it would have surpassed Buffy as my favorite show. When I first watched Firefly it was a little hard for me to get into it because there's just a lot thrown at you with characters, weird use of swear words, and all of this future talk. Once I knew every character it was a great show. Hope you like it this time around, but if there was a Whedon show I think you'd like this would be the one.
Buffy and Firefly aren't that different though, Whedon shows always have action, comedy, drama, and horror. That's one reason I like him so much, he mixes everything together so well.

I might be up for finally taking a stab at this again with you guys. I too watched the first 2 (3?) episodes and couldn't really get into it. But I watched the movie and liked it so...who knows?

Sweet Krub, the more the shinier!
I'm starting the first episode right now, but this was a two hour premier people so it's roughly an hour and a half without the commercials.

Re: Firefly Discussion
Favorite Moment: I have two for this episode. I really like when Mal tells Simon that Kaylee is dead, only for it to just be a joke on him. That was a good 3-4 minutes of build up to a really dramatic moment, only for it to be a joke.
Least Favorite Moment (If you have one): Can't really think of anything that bothered me about the episode.
Favorite Line: "Kaylee just wishes the doctor was a gynecologist." It's crude and it shows how caring of a Captain that Mal is.
Favorite Character in the Episode: Jayne, with Mal as a close second. Jayne's gyno line and his "10% of nothing" bits just make me smirk enough to give him the win. Mal had a lot more character reveal though, which isn't too surprising since he's the main character.
Least Favorite Character in the Episode: Dodson, but he should be. Fun fact, he's been in a lot of my favorite shows. Firefly, obviously. He also had a part in S 3, episode 1 of Buffy. He also had a role in Angel. Seinfeld fans might recognize him as well, he was the guy that worked at the gym that thought he was best friends with Jerry, Ramon, that Newman almost killed by doing the cannon ball.
Thoughts on the Episode: Really great episode for a series premier. Besides River and Simon's story a lot is covered and wrapped up, giving it almost a movie feel. It's a really great series opener with lots of character content and action/drama/giggles.
Episode Grade: I like the show too much to grade fairly, so I just won't. Maybe after I watch them all I'll grade them according to how they stack up to how great every episode should be.

I remember the pilot pretty vividly so I skipped ahead to episode 2/3.

Re: Firefly Discussion
Jayne was my favorite when I watched before and that stayed true rewatching the pilot. Bret also stole my joke about that guy being Ramon from Seinfeld. Pretty good pilot episode. Probably a solid B I guess.
Just to make sure "The Train Job" is next right?

Re: Firefly Discussion
Yup, Train Job is next. If memory serves me correct, Fox really wanted Train Job to be the very first episode.
I checked out imdb, and Ramon's actor was also on another favorite of mine, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Off the top of my head though I don't remember seeing him, but that just might be because I only saw the episode once. If he would have been in Sopranos, he would have had all my favorite shows covered.

Re: Firefly Discussion
I watched The Train Job this morning. It was solid enough if unremarkable.
Bret did you watch this when it first aired on TV? It seems this was the first episode to actually air way back when it premiered.

Re: Firefly Discussion
No, I never watched it when it aired. I remember watching a little bit of one episode. Airing it on a Friday really killed it though, especially if a Whedon fan like myself didn't tune in.
I'll tune in and watch The Train Job tonight.

Re: Firefly Discussion
I think it picks up a bit after the Train Job. The series still feels cheap but not in the bad way, but in a "aw, look at how much they made with nothing" kind of feel. But the scenarios get more interesting I think as the show goes on (so far, anyway)

Re: Firefly Discussion
I think it picks up as well, and you really start liking the characters more. I've watched the show 3 times I believe, and from what I can remember Out of Gas is my favorite episode. Other favorites are Jaynestown and the last episode, but the titles alludes me.

Re: Firefly Discussion
I'm going to watch 2 tonight for sure, and if others watch 3 I'll do the same as well. Got home from work yesterday and Lindsay (I'm sick of calling her wife, so everyone my wife's name is Lindsay) was sleeping. I watched the first with her and wanted to continue that way.

Re: Firefly Discussion
Favorite Moment: When Mal kicks the guy into the ship exhaust that doesn't listen
Least Favorite Moment (If you have one): Although I love Jayne, sometimes Alec Baldwin is a bad actor. His whole drugged up acting bit was bad.
Favorite Line: "You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with 'til ya understand who's in ruttin' command here."
Favorite Character in the Episode: Mal. You really get to see the good side of a character that does a lot of bad things. You seen it in the first episode, but more so here. Plus, he was constantly amusing, which is always a plus for me.
Least Favorite Character in the Episode: Kaylee, not because she sucked, just because her role was little.
Thoughts on the Episode: A good fun episode. Better than the typical filler episodes TV has.

And pspiddy, what are the prescriptions for? Sorry if you posted it earlier, I either didn't see it or my pea-sized brain forgot.

Re: Firefly Discussion
Favorite Moment: Simon and River hanging outside of Serenity when the ship was being searched for them. I remember when I first watching it and was wondering how they were going to get out of this jam.
Least Favorite Moment (If you have one):
Favorite Line: "Her legs." Really liked Wash saying that, right after Zoe said they're a private couple.
Favorite Character in the Episode: No one really stood out for me.
Least Favorite Character in the Episode: Same as above.
Thoughts on the Episode: The worst of the ones I've watched so far, but still enjoyable to watch.

Re: Firefly Discussion
How they hid them was quite clever. Another solid episode.
Also Alec Baldwin is a great actor. Not sure what he has to do with the thread anyway

Re: Firefly Discussion
I think I got his name wrong. I meant Adam. Adam Baldwin is the guy who plays Jayne. I was referring to when he was acting drugged up.

Oh that's a bummer. I hope you feel better. How I don't have ulcers is beyond me. Maybe I do but I just don't know it, but if I don't I'm quite amazed. Lots of pop and spicy foods for me.

Re: Firefly Discussion
I knew who you meant. I was just joking about the Baldwin mix up.
I watched Shindig last night. Atherton is a real prick. I thought all the stuff with Kaylee at the party was cute like her talking with the guys about engines and it was fun to see those bitchy girls get put in their place. The crew plotting their little rescue mission was funny too.
I think this is the last one I watched before I stopped last time. So should be all new for me from here on out.

Damn dude, I had no idea. Hope you feel better soon spiddy!
I really liked Shindig as well for pretty much the same reasons as Trip. The crew plotting their rescue mission was a nice little moment, and I'm glad it didn't actually end up happening, made it all the more charming.
