Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Most people have three of my game so it is really hard for me to pick one person, but I'm leaning towards San or Krubix. I think I'd pick San for sure if he had 1 Metal Gear game.

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
I know what you mean Rainjar, if I had multiple plays of some games my list would be better.
1. Shadow of the Colossus
2. The Last of Us
3. Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time
4. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
5. Bioshock
I like Trip's list

SMB3 was my favorite 2-D Mario game, bar none. But I honestly loved SM64. To me it was a sublime experience that subsequent 3-D Marios have yet to exceed.

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Well, since we're going to 20...
11. Resident Evil 4
12. Fallout: New Vegas
13. Demon's Souls
14. Sakura Wars: So Long My Love
15. Okami
16. Pokemon
17. Donkey Kong
18. Mortal Kombat II
19. Final Fantasy Tactics
20. The Simpsons
Again, slightly different from what I did before, when I had Fallout 3 and Mario Kart 64 on there. MK64 is still my all-time favorite racing game. Fallout 3 has great atmosphere, but New Vegas is just so much richer in terms of game mechanics. The Simpsons, Konami's arcade beat-em-up, is still a great joy to play, but I have to admit, Dragon's Crown is giving it serious competition in that genre.

I think we ALL have games that aren't as good if you break them down but nostalgia is a powerful force. And the feelings we felt while playing them will never go away and whatnot.
You all have excellent taste by the way.

Well, kinda. Fallout: New Vegas came out two years after Fallout 3, but Fallout 3 didn't get bounced by a totally different game series, it got bounced by an improved version of its own gameplay. The Simpsons is still a damned fun game, for all that Dragon's Crown is such a blast. And Mario Kart 64 is still my favorite racing game ever, but racing just isn't as high on my list of gaming edibles as RPGs, SRPGs, and action-adventure games. And then there's Ni no Kuni, which was better than I dreamed it would be, that knocked quite a few games down. That said, my top five are pretty safe. XCOM, for instance, was great, but didn't wow me nearly as much as Valkyria.
No game will ever, ever come close to Final Fantasy VII.

I have a hard time seeing my top 5 threatened too. Maybe Bioware could create something really great soon, but it would also mean the game needs to beat Pokemon. And you all should know how hard it is to get me to like something more than Pokemon.

That's how I feel. There's a couple of dumb things in the game (dressing up like a girl to sneak into that pimps place) and the translation is now horrible, but that battle system, music, story, characters, graphics (not the character models, but everything else), and world are still beautiful to this day.

Well, that's what I was trying to say. Like, some of my games have huge gaping flaws in them but yet I can't stop myself from covering them in butter and rubbing them all over me.
You guys do that right?

Your above comment about butter made me think of Seinfeld and when Kramer would tan with butter. The scene where Newman pictures him as the turkey also popped into my mind.

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Out of the 3 Playstation Final Fantasies 7 was the one that held up extremely well under my cynical mind. IX is still great but the battle system is slow and there's not a lot of reason to use ANY of the skills and the story has a few...weird elements.
Seven is just solid. THe story holds up (translation weirdness aside), I personally love the weird humor in it (doesn't take itself super seriously), the materia system is interesting when you think about stat management, the characters are good, the music is wonderful, good villain...ah...good times. Not that I need to tell you any of this.

Hey, I got this weird mole on my back. Think you can take a meat slicer to it?
The materia system is great, you can almost make any character anything you want, even though some are better suited for other things. Limit breaks are awesome (I wish they'd give you access to all of them though, not just a certain level), the battles are fast and fun (totally agree that IX is slow, my only complaint about that game), and it is still just so great almost 20 years later.

But then they made Qu or whatever with the massive tongue travel with you and the really perfect balance of its light hearted setting with really dark scenes was destroyed in an instance. I've barely played it since she joined, she's worse than Cait Sith.
Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
It really doesn't take much to light the spark of Rainjar hatred does it? I mean...ignoring the fact that in most FF games if you just don't take the character with you you wont see them for 85% of the game.

I need to play the PS1 Final Fantasy games... well... I've played them all. I need to finish them. Or maybe I don't. VII VIII an IX are all sitting on my Vita...

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Quina is the worst character, but I really just never used s/he. Some of the stuff s/he says is rather humorous though. What I disliked most about her/him is that you had to eat enemies to get more abilities for her, and that can be a pain in the ass. Rainjar, if you like Final Fantasy games and continue to play it I guarantee you'll find yourself liking the game again. It's just a great solid game, the last great Final Fantasy game. I still love X, but after IX they just slowly went downhill (despite X and XII being good, they're just not as good as IX).
And Matt, I can confirm that VII looks really good on the Vita. I did a PSP and Vita comparison and the Vita version was a lot better looking.

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Quina has funny dialogue, but the character design is whack and Quina's really not useful in battle. The only FF game which really did Blue Magic right was - once again - Final Fantasy VII, and even Quina's basic attacks are very random in damage.

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Quina could have been AWESOME if they would have made her get SOME sort of one time stat boost or a skill from every enemy she ate. Or maybe items to prevent overpowering. But if every enemy had given you something she could have been one of those awesome characters to invest time in.
Cait Sith however...there is no hope for that bullshit.

and the first time you can just not recruit him/her. Actually it might be possible to never get uina i can't remember but i know the first time you can just skip it.

First time just don't go to the marsh. (After Lindblum while heading to Burmecia). Second time i think you can just walk on by (going to the Fossil Roo) I'm not 100% on that though.
Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Surely you have to go through the marsh to get to Fossil Roo though. Cuz Quina or...someone shows. THe way. ALSO. Show of hands. Who thought Quina was a girl vs who thought s/he was a guy?
I always thought girl...

Re: Top Five Games of All-Time
Yeah you have to go through the marsh, but i dunno i think it's possible to either walk by him/her or i do believe there's a dialogue option to refuse to take him/her with you when you get to his/her master. Don't know if it works though.
I never did not take uina cause lameness aside she/he can still soak up uite a bit of damage, and a fourth party member does help, but it always seemed like there was a way not to.

I always thought the marsh was easy to miss but I never had the guts to try missing it for fear of another (as I personally call it) "chrono cross incident"
