I figured in honor of Breaking Bad finishing up we'd try picking our favorite series finales.

Spoiler central...right, I'm just going to post up my favorites, but not say why. Or something. I could put up spoiler tags but that just makes too much sense.

1. The Sopranos - vague, but still fun to talk about
2. The Wire - despite a lackluster/awesome final season (it's so conflicting) the finale was satisfying in its own way...
3. The Cosby Show - Classy.
4. Cowboy Bebop - It's a very serialized show, it never really has ONE big storyline but it was satisfying seeing the whole thing definitively end. Yeah, it's not happy, or particularly satisfying but it worked for the characters in it.
5. The Simpsons, HA! We wish.

Yeah this might be a topic where explaining why is tricky. Spoiler tags would be nice if you are going to go into detail. I say keep it vague otherwise.

TV Top Five | Favorite Series Finales Empty Re: TV Top Five | Favorite Series Finales

Post by TripOpt55 Thu Oct 03, 2013 2:51 pm

Yeah I've been wracking my brain to make sure I'm not forgetting a great one. I still might be, but here it goes:

1. Scrubs Season 8 Finale: Okay so this might be sort of cheating, but I always think of the Season 8 finale as the series finale. Not because the ninth season was bad (I liked it well enough), but because the creator intended it to be a spin-off and ABC made it Season 9 for marketing purposes. So I count it. Anyway, it was exactly how you end a show and the last segment (7-8 minutes) is one of my favorite moments/scenes in TV history.

2. Frasier: I don't think I knew how I wanted this series to end, but this was great way to do.

3. 30 Rock: The newest addition. The final scene was an excellent answer to a series long tease as well.

4. Friday Night Lights: I was surprised to find that this is my favorite drama series finale, but it was a great one. One character's resolution was totally out of left field, but otherwise I liked how all the other characters wrapped up and with how many there were over the course of the series, that is a pretty good feat.

5. The Wire: I guess I will slot this one in her though I've only watched it the one time. I had some issues with the fifth season, but the finale wrapped everything up well. I did sort of hate the way one character left the show, but that was before the finale, so I guess I can't hold it against the finale.

Honestly most finales had something wrong with them when I thought back. They are so tough to pull off, but I feel pretty good great about these five.

I spent most of my time watching random episodes of comedies... and that was mainly just The Simpsons, so...

1. The Wire. Wrapped up everything really well in a way that was true to form for the series.

2. The Sopranos. I had mixed feelings at first but I'm not sure it could have ended any other way without making a mockery of everything that came before.

3. Breaking Bad. Solid ending... not incredible, but solid

4. Lost. hahahahahahahaha

Would you guys discuss Lost if I made a thread. I know I've never really discussed it with Twolf and I feel much different about it than when I first discussed it with aj when it aired.

1. Avatar: The Last Airbender- Even though the ending got a little too much into deus ex machina territory, everything else about this was so epic. The biggest fights, everything got resolved, Bumi and Iroh got their fun, and left me completely satisfied. Also had one of Sokka's funniest moments. Easiest pick by far.

2. Futurama- A great way to end Fry and Leela's story. Combining the way it ended with showing the series premiere right after the finale was just so damn perfect. Plus a lot of fun with the professor's newest invention.

3. Spectacular Spiderman- Should have just been a season finale, but Spidey's fight against the Green Goblin was one of the best moments in the series. Goblin hired so many goons it was crazy, the mystery of the Goblin's identity was incredibly well done with such a brilliant way to explain all the inconsistencies. Hopefully some day we get a real one though, but I've pretty much lost hope now.

4. Breaking Bad- Like Aja said, just really solid. Good twists, gives good resolution.

5. The Office- This show should have ended four or five years before it did, but at least they ended it really, really well.

I'm a HUGE fan of how Sopranos ended. I am constantly defending it. I also really hate any Godfather references.

1. Futurama. Love the way it segued right into the pilot episode on its original run, in response to Fry's "Do you want to do it all over again?"
2. Newhart - I guess most of you don't remember either Newhart from the 1980s or the Bob Newhart Show from the 1970s, but the last episode of Newhart made the entire series out to be a dream of Bob Newhart's character from the 1970s Bob Newhart Show.
3. Star Trek: The Next Generation - "All Good Things..."
4. Cheers - Teased Sam and Diane's romance from six years earlier.
5. Ranma 1/2 - ended with Ranma's mom returning to find out if Ranma had become a strong man. Unfortunately, she'd also made a vow that if he hadn't become a manly man, she'd force both him and his father to commit seppuku, so Ranma had to hide his female identity from her.

Ha, I got worked up about the Lost ending and wrote this big long tirade to my sister about how I would have ended it with the condition that I couldn't change anything that happened up to season 5. She still asks for it occasionally to this day. Suffice to say, I have some things to say about it. I would be up for it...

Would you guys recommend watching Lost if you want to have fun watching it become a train wreck? Or just avoid it altogether?

It's not a train wreck in an entertaining way, I would say. And hell, the first 2 seasons are still some of my favorite TV. If the show had kept on that kind of pacing and feel it would be one of my favorite TV shows.

^ No. Because I would be forced to pick Seinfeld and that makes me sad.
