Weekly Top 5: Top 5 Genres
Everyone tends to have a preference for genres, what are your favorites? Horror, Comedy, Romance, Drama, Historical Drama, Action, Thriller, Sci Fi, etc. I suppose another way to word it would be: when you just want to watch something but you aren't in the mood to branch out what do you usually go for?

1. Animated- If there was anything I love watching the most, it's a nice animated movie. In my opinion there just seems to be more creativity there. Whether it's stop motion, CG, hand drawn, or construction paper (ie South Park:BLU), I love these
2. Sci-fi- Sci-fi just makes anything better for me. It gives action movies a chance to have more fun with special effects, but throw it into a comedy like Back to the Future and it's still great.
3. Comedy- I just love to laugh
4. Heist- Feel like it deserves its own mention since it doesn't really fit into these others. But make a movie like Ocean's 11 where the characters have some crazy scheme to pull of some scheme and I love it.
5. Action- Goes double if it's sci-fi or involves superheroes.

Re: Weekly Top 5: Top 5 Genres
For some reason I was thinking you were talking about like...the French ones where there was home invasion or Funny Games or something like that. So like a foreign Thriller type thing with a really weird protagonist. You seen Chaser, spiddy?
Also my entry:
1. Sci Fi - I love things with a sci fi twist. Especially when it's intelligent sci fi like 2001 or Blade Runner or Children of Men.
2. Thriller/Cat and Mouse - Chaser, No Country, Silence of the Lambs. Just that tense, chasing stuff, I love it.
3. Action Movies - That said, I love action movies that have REAL stunts and real action. So Casino Royale, fucking great, 80's action movies too, but a lot of movies lately tend to be shit. But for examples, Bourne movies, Bond, Martial Arts movies too I'd throw in there. That said, I also loved The Avengers so I can break my own rules too.
4. Animated - Definitely in terms of VISUAL creativity there is so much cool stuff in animation. Pixar, Ghibli, older disney come to mind.
5. Western/Samurai Films - I put these two together because they both influenced each other loads and have similar stylistic traits. Once Upon a Time in the West, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Good the Bad and the Ugly, My Darling Clementine, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence...among others.

Re: Weekly Top 5: Top 5 Genres
This question is so hard to answer. I'm not even comfortable with the ones I've listed. I like all kinds of genres and the things I jump to just for comfort food can't be limited to what I've picked here. None of these are limited to a specific time period (period settings or when they were made) and I take world cinema into account (to be honest, though, I haven't seen too many foreign comedies).
Action
Science Fiction
Drama
Suspense/Thriller
Comedy
By the way, how the fuck would you categorize Brotherhood of the Wolf?

Yeah, classifying dramas is a bitch and a half but just to get an idea of what people are into...

Re: Weekly Top 5: Top 5 Genres
I never think about this to be honest... haha. I guess Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, maybe a Dramedy (is this a thing in movies... sure), Drama... Some of these seem broad.
If this is a first step in making selections for Now Watching, I'll try whatever, but if its on Netflix or a movie that pretty much everyone owns (I won't, but my brother has a big collection I can pilfer) that'd be helpful. For some of the picks at least. Obviously you want people going outside that for some.

I love Sci-Fi, then Animation. After that I'll watch a little bit of everything so it's hard for me to make a list of five.

Re: Weekly Top 5: Top 5 Genres
this ain't no easy list
1. Dramas with action, Dick Flicks/Action - I would say action in general isn't my favorite, but dramas with a lot of action are my favorites. Pulp Fiction has action moments, but I don't consider it an action movie. To me it is a blend of action and drama. Same goes with Saving Private Ryan, you can't classify that as an action movie because of the story and the hardships the characters and times were facing. I do like action movies, but I don't want this to be confused with something like Crank, GI Joe, or Battleship. Those are shit and I don't want them to be the ones people are thinking I mean. Basically movies like Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club, Jaws, The Departed, Goodfellas, etc...
2. Dramas - I also just like straight up dramas like Good Will Hunting, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Dances With Wolves.
3. Blockbusters - Movies with a big budget, but with good directors behind them as well. This could be movies like Jurassic Park, The Avengers, The Dark Knight, original Spider Man trilogy, Kill Bill
4. Horror - I like all kinds of horror movies. My favorite horror movies are Phantasm, Scream (I love the whodunnit vibe), Halloween, original Night of the Living Dead, Dead Alive. I also really like to watch really shitty cheesy horror movies.
5. Comedy - Movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, This Is the End, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Something About Mary. These are just great comedies I feel will stand the test of time.
runner-up - Animated movies by Disney, especially Pixar.

You (and this is aimed at Trip too) watched any good asian horror films? Very different beast than their western counterparts.
