5 Games you Would Recommend for Interactive Narrative Empty 5 Games you Would Recommend for Interactive Narrative

I didn't quite know how to make this topic because it would kind of need to be a new top 5 thread for every category so I'll just start with one and see what you all think.

The other night I thought of what games I would recommend to a friend if I wanted them to experience the best of ____ category and I thought it might be interesting to extend to you all, since you're all very knowledgeable about the subject.

SO, long story short, for this thread, what five games would you personally recommend someone play in order to demonstrate video game's ability to tell a story interactively? So in your mind, what five games are the quintessential picks to demonstrate the potential for storytelling in the medium, regardless of how flawed you think the game might be, or even if it didn't intend to create an interactive story moment?

Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus (more traditional sorts of stories)
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (same)
Kentucky Route Zero (dialog choice driven story)
Journey (multiplayer storytelling)
Minecraft (make your own story)

Good topic, Wolfcube. I feel like there's more I could add but I'm not sure yet if the interactive bit is what makes them good storytelling.

I guess when I bring this topic up people say "yeah, that's a good story, but it could have worked as a TV show, movie etc" and I have a few games I bring up as working because they're games and wouldn't have worked in another medium.

Uncharted 2- For how it seamlessly lets you control giant action setpieces while telling a likable story overall.

Kotor 1 and 2- Mostly 2 to show just what it has to say about choices by letting you pick them, but it really hits harder when you're used to 1's view of light/dark side then 2 hits you with all that grey morality. Also some planets have a very horror-esque atmosphere, in a way only video games really do.

The Walking Dead- To show how just making choices can be engaging in and of itself.

Ace Attorney- The way it's set up uses video game tropes to its advantage. Get on the right track, and the music suddenly shifts getting you pumped up. When you have a good foundation, it ramps up more getting you psyched. Also the way it has everything staged more like a Street Fighter match than a legitimate courtroom gives some great commentary on how in a trial the attorneys matter more than the actual truth.

Spec Ops: The Line- Not a perfect game by any means, but give this to someone right after Call of Duty and it'll hit hard.

You should have said something about how much better the game's story and characters are than the show, but your answer works as well. I'm not the only one that thinks the game's story/characters are better, am I?

I could definitely see that. The writing on the show is such a joke.
