Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

Post by BretBaber Mon Nov 02, 2015 10:18 pm

Basically movies that you love, that you probably shouldn't. Could mean that they're shit movies, but you love them for that. Maybe it's a rom-com that just tickles you in all of the right places. I really only know of one right now, so I'll have to think of others, but hopefully everyone else can come up with 5 faster than me. If anyone else things they can come up with a Guilty Pleasure Games and TV show list feel free to make a thread for those too.

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

I can think of two, but I'm going to try and think of others.

1. Cruel Intentions - Maybe because it has my girl Sarah Michelle Gellar I love this movie, but even despite that I think I'd still love it. Has one of my favorite soundtracks, has some deceiving little shits, and laughs and sobs. One of my favorite movies from my teens.

2. The Paper Brigade - This should technically be #1 since it was a Disney made movie for the Disney channel, and I was probably to old to be watching it. However, when I saw it come on Disney East I watched it, and I'll be damned, I sometimes watched it on Disney West as well!

1. Dumb and Dumber - it's just a really funny movie.
2. Mortal Kombat - It isn't my favorite video game movie, but I enjoy watching it once in awhile. My dad took me to see it in theaters when it came out in 1995.
3. The Joy Luck Club - It's a "chick flick", but that doesn't mean it still isn't a good movie. I don't feel like this is a guilty pleasure movie per se, but it kind of fits the criteria listed in the OP.
4. Big Daddy - my favorite Adam Sandler movie.
5. Project A-Ko series - it's a parody of the US and Japanese comic industries of the 1980s that started out as a hentai series before they decided to rework it into a more mainstream production. It still has some traces of its hentai origins.

Thanks, your answers have my wheels a spinning a bit more.

Also, wondering if Trip watched that Paper Brigade movie I spoke of. Since the two of us are close in age, we seem to like a lot of the same things.

I would say Team America but I still stand by that movie in that it's not a guilty pleasure, it's a genuinely well made, well written masterpiece.

This is not an answer to your question but I just had to get that out of the way.

Can't say I remember Paper Brigade. I didn't watch a lot of Disney. I was more of a Nickelodeon kid I guess.

I was more of a Disney kid. I did watch Guts a lot, and I KNEW that I would fucking obliterate every god damn kid on that show. I could pogo dick up to the very top of the Aggro Rock and beat those shits with a 50 second wait time.

Even though I might have been too old, I loved watching Flash Forward, Even Stevens, and they played a lot of reruns of Boy Meets World.

I've got 4 titles in mind. Thinking about the fifth and when that's decided, I'll write mine up.

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

1. Bad Boys II
To this day, I don't know how Michael Bay directed a creation so foul in its worldview, so blatantly sexist, racist and homophobic (and at times just downright mean-spirited) and still got away with murder. I saw this in the theater and despite my better judgments, I liked it. I've always felt that Bay was not only making this as a love letter to Don Simpson (Jerry Bruckheimer's producing partner for the majority of the 80's and through the mid-90s; The Rock was their final production since Simpson died during production; also, Simpson is listed as a producer on BBII) but as a glorious, sleazy vulgar sendoff to the gloriously sleazy, vulgar buddy cop/action films that populated the 80s and 90s. After this epic statement, there's nothing more he can do with the genre.

The problem is that he brought the same attitude/characteristics of BBII (the more offensive traits) and incorporated them into the Transformers films. This scares me away from them more than their diversions from the source material, among other things. So the novelty of the send-off doesn't hold as much power as it once did. But it still holds up as a gleefully nasty work, technically amazing and completely fucking bonkers. I'm actually proud to own it on DVD.

2. A Better Tomorrow II
I've only seen John Woo's shittiest film (and he'd agree) all the way through once. It's embarrassing. But the last 20 minutes (Chow Yun-Fat, Ti Lung and Dean Shek staging an apocalyptic raid on the bad guys mansion; not just guns but grenades, swords, axes, sticks of dynamite) is so much bloody fun that its worth hunting it down on Youtube. As for the rest, don't bother. No one can defend it.

3. The Cell
Tarsem Singh's feature film debut (wherein Jennifer Lopez - as a psychiatrist who treats comatose patients using a technology that places her in their mind/dreamspace - jumps into the mind of a serial killer to obtain clues of the whereabouts of his latest victim) was once very admired by myself. It's very unpleasant at times but also visually striking and Lopez and Vincent D'Onofrio (as the killer) are fantastic. Here's the three main problems: Vince Vaughn's performance as the FBI agent who works with Lopez and a big gaping plot hole/logical inconsistency that I can't believe no one took into consideration (hint: if Vaughn's dumbass character just did his damn job, the 2nd half wouldn't even be necessary). Maybe they did and just said "fuck it, do it anyway". Also, it uses the incredibly lazy device of "the killer was abused as a child so that's what made him a killer." Please. Don't know if I can revisit this one again but there are moments, images that are burned into my brain and I'm still grateful that I got to see them. It led to better work for Tarsem (The Fall, for instance).

4. Jupiter Ascending
Let's get one thing straight: I adore this movie. It's too ambitious. It's complex plot is too condensed for its 2+ hour running time. It really doesn't care if you can follow along with it. It's also just batshit crazy. But it has plenty of humor and heart and it just looks as though everyone involved had a great time making it. As much as I love it, I can't recommend it to just anyone. It'll have to remain as one of those oddities that I alone treasure.

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

1. Goon- I remember one of my friends showed it to me it saying him and another of them watched it four times straight when they first discovered it. I think they're idiots and wanted to punch him every time he laughed. But I'm an idiot too because I keep rewatching this movie. I know it's bad yet it's also incredible.
2. The Room- Basically defines guilty pleasure. Every choice it made is wrong in the worst way possible yet it is amazing for it.
3. Billy Madison- Very stupid premise, but it's still hilarious.
4. Flash Gordon- Ted summed it up perfectly "He taught us right from wrong, good from evil. And that the word 'acting' apparently has an extremely broad definition."
5. Amazing Spider-Man 2- I'll never call this a good movie. But it is a fun movie. I love the slow motion parts, Electro's dubstep, even with all the crap it fails miserably at I still enjoy it a lot.

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

I only watched AMS2 once despite owning it on blu-ray, but I really liked it as well. I don't remember it being bad, so maybe I'll have to watch it again. It's a shame there won't be anymore, I thought they weren't as good as Spider-Man 1 and 2 by Raimi, but they were still fun movies.

3. Phantasm - I don't want to throw this in here because it is easily in my Top 20 movies of all time, but I also see it for the many flaws. When there's a quick shot of Mike falling into the red planet and Jody and Reggie pull him out, you can see that it's clearly not 14 year old Michael Baldwin they pull out, but a middle-aged man with a mustache. Also, that ridiculous scene where the Tall Man's cut off finger mysteriously warps into a giant fly. Hell, even the last sentence probably makes people scratch their head and say "What the hell does any of this mean?" Despite all of that, I love it. For crying out loud, it has awesome lines like "Maybe it was just some gopher in heat." I LOVE that movie and all of the sequels!

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies Empty Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Movies

Even though I like it, I'm not disappointed it ended without concluding. The villains were the least interesting parts of those movies and focusing on them in the future seemed like it would hurt the movies. I think what Marvel will do with him is going to be much more interesting to see.

As for my issues with ASM2, the villains I already mentioned between Rhino getting barely any time, Electro not getting enough development (his deleted scenes really should have been in the movie), and Goblin's terrible design and lack of development. Also had an issue with how everyone just loves Spider-Man in it and everything goes right until the very end, he's supposed to be an underdog, instead it's like he's a perfect hero with a tragic ending. Plus Peter's dad getting involved is stupid. These aren't enough to kill it with how much I enjoy the action and web swinging, but I can't call it a good movie with them.
