Top 5 Sound Effects

To make distinctions, sound effects don't count as ambiance, or soundtrack, or a line of dialogue, but purely "that sound that sword makes when it swings" or "that button noise".

Figured it's open ended enough but I can think of a few...

1. Hadoken! - I'm taking liberty with the dialogue thing but that's O.K. since it is a direct result of user input. And anybody that disagrees can get ready for the next challenge!

2. Power Up! (SMB) - I choose this over all of the great effects in Mario because of course.

3. Stolen Ship (Galaga) - Everyone does it on purpose but it doesn't stop the game from mocking you every time. More incentive to kick ass.

4. Lickers (RE2) - The camera is fixed so walking into a room and hearing their sounds brings all kinds of dread. Add in the tank controls and you basically are doomed if you can't navigate to the exit quickly.

5. Speed Pads (Wipeout) - The game is filled with great sounds but this stands out as iconic to me.

I tried to stick closely to the sounds that I can recognize with my eyes closed and not necessarily the "best". There are some pew-pews I didn't mention because I couldn't think of the exact names. Like that crazy-ass Red Faction gun or the Gears homing gun or whatever it's called.

1. It's Super Effective!- Pokemon So damn satisfying

2. Gyarados cry- Pokemon Sets it up as a beast so damn perfectly

3. That noise when you die in The Last of Us. Combine that with how it just fades to black right when Joel/Ellie die right when they look in pain still haunts me. The game lets you live just enough and that noise compliments it perfectly

4. Picking up rings in Sonic the Hedgehog. Especially when you get a lot at once

5. The noise when you get experience in Fallout 3.

Honorable mention-Lightsaber noise- Kind of cheating since it came from the movies, but so badass

I totally wanted to put Lightsaber from KOTOR. It is cheating though. Also, your 5 almost made my list.

1. Final Fantasy VII - The noise it makes when you're about to unleash a limit break, because you know something awesome is about to happen.

2. Killzone games - The noise it makes when you kill someone. Let's you know the job is done.

3. Call of Duty games - Head shot noise. Didn't want to add this, since I now hate the games, but it was a pleasure to hear back during Moder Warfare days.

4. Metal Gear Solid games - When the enemies finally pass out after I dart them.

5. Dragon Quest games - The sound it makes when you level up. Kind of a song, but not really.

Honorable mention - I would have made this number 1 but it isn't from any certain game, but I love the trophy ding noise.

Power-up noise in Mario (stolen from spiddy)

And my Prisoner of the moment one: When the princesses in Rayman Legends go "Heh-Hah-Heh." Not sure why those chicks crack me up so much but they do. I like most Rayman characters, I guess they are just new.

I can't believe the Zelda one hasn't been mentioned yet. Good pick Trip.

I totally whiffed on the Zelda secret sound. Last time I played a Zelda was Twilight Princess and that was for, like, a two-hour sit down. Before that it was back when WW launched. I really need to get back into some Zelda...

I was also surprised no one said Zelda, but hey I got to do it first! Where is Twolf's list?

I'm surprised I didn't put that in my list either in hindsight. Bad Greenman!

2 - Sweet Tooth's laugh (the old-school high-pitched one)

3 - Mortal Kombat's TOASTY guy

4 - Sonic picking up rings

5 - Smash Bros. Falcon PUNCH!

Ah yes, my list...it's so hard though.

1. The "oooo" sound effect in Rayman when you discover secrets
2. The alert sound in MGS
3. The chainsaw in resident evil 4...hear it and you shit bricks
4. The power up in Mario
5. hmmmm last one is hard.
