Re: What have you been listening to?

Post by TripOpt55 on Sun Jun 19, 2016 8:20 pm

Went to Firefly yesterday. It was like nothing I had been to before. The sheer scope and size of it was bigger than any I had been to. Chvrches was once again amazing. Death Cab was great. And then Lauren from Chvrches sang a song with Death Cab. Chvrches is my favorite band now and Death Cab was my favorite in college, so this was like a mash up of two musical eras of my life. Crazy. I ended skipping switching to another stage to see Atlas Genius to secure a better spot for Chvrches and Death Cab. Ended up like 8 or so "rows" of people back maybe? Which was pretty good for such a huge crowd. After being crammed in for so long, I decided to bail after Death Cab though. Went and watched some M83. Came back for Florence + the Machine and didn't have nearly as good of a spot, so couldn't really get many good pictures. Florence is pretty nuts on stage. I'd never seen her in a live performance (even online) and it was very cool. Incredible voice. Great backup from the band and singers too.

I tried to get some pics of the bands. Only a few I was close enough to capture though. Pics aren't great, but I will post a few:

Sign at the entrance

Chvrches

Close up I caught of Lauren flexing

Death Cab

Pvris doing an accoustic set (some bands did sets like this at a couple of the side stages in addition to their main sets on the big stages).

Listened to the new Blink 182 a few times this past week. It is pretty good. This isn't really exactly my favorite kind of music anymore though. I also didn't think it sounded all that much like Blink... maybe like half the time.

So mean and my dad just got Desert Trip tickets for October 7-9. It's by the Coachella people (and dubbed Oldchella) and has the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan playing Friday, Paul McCartney and Neil Young Saturday, and Roger Waters and The Who Sunday. My uncle and cousins are going too and renting a house. Pretty excited for it.

Such a crazy line-up. That must have cost a fortune

My cousins got lucky and were able to get on the wait list right away and got tickets for $350 a pop. Scalpers drained the tickets by the time we got on. We got ours for $500 off Stubhub which when you consider the lineup is less than $100 a band. I'm not complaining.

That's awesome. Rolling Stones are my favorite classic rock band. Would be cool to see them.

I've been listening to the new album Wildflower by The Avalanches. The singles didn't really wow me and a few things annoyed me (one song in particular has kids' voices that I don't think work well at all) but it's really growing on me. Sort of reminds me of The Beach Boys, or moreso Brian Wilson's completed version of Smile, in tone. It could end up being an album of the year candidate for me (if only because it gives me hope for Half-Life 3 again. This thing's been in the works for like 15 years)

I found a Japanese rock band I fucking love...which would probably not interest any of you. But I figured I'd share, because, you know, sharing is caring.

That I did not, haha. It's called Theatre Brook. The album specifically I've been listening to is intention from 2010.

Not sure how to word this exactly, but who do you guys' think has the best voice or which singer's voice is your favorite? I realize best and favorite are sort of different, but whichever is fine. I guess the main point would be to divorce the voice from the music, so you aren't just picking the singer from your favorite band necessarily (though that might be the same answer of course). Apologies if we have had this discussion before.

Daniel Johns from silverchair. He can scream when he wants, but he also has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.

My first instinct would be Brad Delp from Boston or Freddy Mercury from Queen for my favorite.

I'd probably go with Dallas Green from City and Colour and Hannah Reid from London Grammar. Freddy Mercury would definitely be on my short list as well.

I never really considered myself a huge fan of the band, but Gord Downie (The Tragically Hip) probably has my favorite voice. Unique, and versatile yet instantly recognizable no matter what style of song it is. And Freddy Mercury is a shoe-in for one of the best obviously

First instinct is always Freddy Mercury just because he had so much control and power and could control a live crowd like no one's business. Not sure though, hard to qualify "best" voices and whatnot.

I'm listening to music made by plants? http://www.plants.fm (open the file in VLC if it isn't working for you)

More of a science thing than a music thing, but I thought it was neat

Listening to the new Paper Route album. Their second and third albums just feel different from the first. I kind of want more of that first album's sound.

Re: What have you been listening to?

Just got back from Desert Trip this weekend. Mentioned it before, was a festival with Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones Friday, Neil Young and Paul McCartney Saturday, and The Who and Roger Waters Sunday. Had a blast there.

Bob Dylan was a let down though, his songs all blurred together and I only recognized one (and it wasn't even that big a hit since I don't remember which one). Especially since not playing "Like a Rolling Stone" to segway into the Rolling Stones is the biggest missed opportunity ever Rolling Stones more than made up for it though, were my favorite all weekend. Played most of their hits and even covered "Come Together" by the Beatles which was fantastic.

Neil Young was good. Kind of had the same problem as Bob Dylan where a bunch of his songs blurred together, but he sounded exactly like he did 40 years ago. Wish he would have played Southern Man and Old Man, but was still great. Paul went all out. Sang "A Day in the Life" with Neil Young, played "Something" with a ukulele as a tribute to John, "My Sweet Lord" as a tribute to George, and "Maybe I'm Amazed" as a tribute to Linda and didn't stop for a break for three hours. Guy's a machine.

The Who was great too. Really love that band and played everything I wanted to hear save "Magic Bus." Played a few great songs I didn't know were by them too. Their ending with "Won't Get Fooled Again" was perfect also. Roger Waters put on a show meanwhile. He had crazy visuals on the screen and did "Another Brick in the Wall" with this huge anti-Trump show. There was a floating pig that said "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" on one side and "Fuck Trump and his Wall" on the other with a bunch of visuals trashing him that showed a bunch of his BS quotes. A lot of people (especially the older crowd) were upset he got political, but I thought it was great personally. And his other images were just out of this world. I can't even think of a way to do them justice, including the Trump ones. See if you can find any streams of it, was pretty unbelievable.

Sounds awesome. What was the setup like? Were there multiple stages? Was it one big general admission pool or were there sectored off seats?

There was just one stage, one band went around 6 the other around 9 and it ended at 12. There were seats in the front and to the side and behind that enormous general admission areas where you could bring chairs and blankets with first come first serve. We had the closest general to the front. There were some attractions to the side also and a bunch of places for food and drinks in the back.
