Re: What have you been listening to?

Do you guys have a place you go to track new music coming out? Perhaps a review or news site? Certain bands I keep an eye out for, but so many albums I just end up bumping into. Maybe if I had places I go to like I do TV and games, I'd be more in the loop. Was just curious if there was certain places you read or something like that.

As lame as it is I combine:

a. Friends
b. NPR
c. AVClub

And that's mostly just to hear the names. But I'm maybe the worst about keeping up with new music so I'm also the worst to ask about this.

Following record labels and bands on twitter works for me, but it sometimes gets lost in the flood of info. Come to think of it, something like Steam's curator feature would be great for this

So they started a new Music Festival in South Jersey two towns over from me which is pretty neat. Only had to drive about 15 minutes instead of the usual much longer trip to Philly or Altantic City for shows. I went yesterday and the turnout was super sad. I can't imagine that went as well as expected. Not a lot of bands I was really into either. Jukebox the Ghost was great though.

Really digging the new Metric album, it's really Electro-poppy which I like.

Also been listening to Lianna La Havas' album Blood, which is a really good chilling out album.

I really like the new Metric album for the most part, but I feel like it tails off by the end. Don't like "The Governess" too much, plus three tracks without Haines singing much is anything but ideal. Haven't listened to it a ton, so I will see if some of the later songs grow on me.

New Chvrches is great. Not sure I like it as much as the first though. I go to see them live on Thursday. Will try and take some pictures.

Chvrches were awesome live! Really great energy, cool light setups, and Lauren was funny when talking between songs. "Clearest Blue" was my favorite of the live performances last night. Tried to take some pics, but with all the lights and stuff they have during the performance it was kind of tough and my phone is pretty old so doesn't have the best camera. Here are a few that came out okay.

I can't really get into the new Chvrches album for some reason. I love the singles they put out but some of the other songs near the middle lack whatever it was that made me like the last album so much.

I've been listening to the new Julia Holter album. More of that really beautiful sound (harpsichord!) that made me like her last album but less awkward/esoteric songwriting. I'm a fan.

The only confirmed album on my radar is Love Streams by Tim Hecker. Then there's new LCD Soundsystem (possibly,) new Radiohead (almost definitely,) and maybe Swans as well.

Seems a little tougher to know ahead of time what is coming out in terms of music than other media. New Miike Snow and Ra Ra Riot are two I am interested in. I am curious what Kanye's album will be like. I don't really listen to rap much anymore, but I still enjoy MBDTF and some tracks off the older albums. On the other hand Yeezus was dreadful.

Random sample in the middle of On Sight > MBDTF = Black Skinhead > The rest of Yeezus. I do love that sample

As someone who's a huge fan of the album format, I was wondering: What are your favorite album openers/closers?

I rarely listen to music out of album format which is why having a few good tracks on an album really doesn't do it for me. So this is a good question (I missed your post somehow until now) so I will have to think on it some more. Feel free to get us started ajapam!

Do you mean openers and closers from the same album, or just openers and closers in general?

Re: What have you been listening to?

My picks for closing tracks. No particular order because they're all pretty much perfect imo

A Day In The Life - The Beatles (Sgt. Pepper) Just a great closing statement and a standout track among their entire catalog.

Eyesore - Women (Public Strain) The rest of the album can be kind of distant and not so accessible at times, but this is one of those tracks that just seems to make sense out of everything else. The second half breaks my heart every time.

The Tourist - Radiohead (OK Computer) Same reasons as A Day in the Life, but Radiohead is almost always great at closers so it's more of a feat that this one stands out so much.

Eclipse - Pink Floyd (DSOTM) duh

All Apologies - Nirvana (In Utero) Same reasons as Eyesore, almost word for word.

Openers are a bit harder, I think. I'll have to think about it

Been listening to the new Ra Ra Riot. Really like the tracks "Instant Breakup" and "Absolutely". Not a great album but I like it well enough.

Spotify has this pretty cool Discover Weekly feature that will build a weekly playlist for you based on what you listen to. Anyway, found this band I have been digging lately called Made in Heights in this past week's playlist. Never heard of them before. Reminds me a little of Banks.

I've been listening to something a bit new for once. This band's sort of a mix of Quebecois folk music, rock, and country. This is one of my favorites.

I saw Ra Ra Riot last night. They were good. They had two opening acts that I didn't like at all. Even removing the fact that I didn't enjoy them, they felt like the oddest fit as opening acts for a main act I have probably ever seen at a concert. Not sure how they chose them, but it was weird.

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL. Good, propulsive, pulse-pounding stuff. Interesting, unexpected writing here, especially the cues for Batman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor. Junkie XL continues the quality he brought to Mad Max Fury Road and I really dig his Batman compositions; sounds like NIN instrumentals which I always love.

Also, ABBA Gold. Very Happy

I went to see Jukebox the Ghost last night. Probably one of the best concerts I have ever been to. They aren't exactly a favorite band of mine, but their performance was very fun and really elevated the whole thing.

A few fun things they did. They brought out a wheel to spin which had a number of songs they don't normally play at concerts and they spun it to choose a song. From the spins, they ended up playing a song they wrote for a cartoon. And another song of theirs where they switched instruments (piano guy played drums, guitar guy played piano, drums guy played guitar). It wasn't bad considering and rather funny. There was another spot called "Steve's Choice" where they apparently let a random Steve from the audience choose a song. They covered "Under Pressure" which is probably my favorite classic rock song (they do a whole Queen cover concert around Halloween called HalloQueen I guess).  And they added another song to the encore too because this was their last show of the tour.

The opener was good too. His name was Greg Holden. He said he would be at the merch table in case anyone wanted to say hi, so me and my friend went out and met him. Then the guys from Jukebox ended up coming out and we met them too. And got some pictures. Here is a picture with us with the piano player/singer Ben. It was pretty cool.

Enjoying the new Deftones album. Finally getting around to trying Kanye too since it is on Spotify. Kind of a mixed bag I guess. Need to listen to it some more. Weezer seemed solid too, only listened to it once though.

Listened to the new M83 album Junk today. Definitely some good tracks on there. Felt like it tailed off as it went on. I only listened to it a couple times while at the gym, so will have to give it a more focused listen. (PS. I love Spotify so much, I listen to so much more music now!)

Guess I might be able to go to a day of the Firefly Music Festival. Pretty big Festival over my way. Here is the lineup:

Chvrches, Florence + the Machine, Death Cab, M83 and Atlus Genius make Saturday the best day to me, so I think I will try for that day.

Yeah, it is pretty crazy. I have never been to something this big. Gone to the Warped Tour a bunch plus some local radio station festivals, but this would be a whole other level.

Also been listening to the new Tegan and Sara which is great. Their sound has evolved a lot over the years and it has kind of just luckily changed similarly to how my taste has changed (from indie rock to more of an electronic poppy sound I guess). Just kind of worked out for me. Only disappointment is how short it is. 10 songs, a little over a half hour and I'd heard four of the songs via single releases before hand. Sometimes I think it'd be better to not listen to singles much before full albums come out. Make the whole thing feel more fresh or something.
