What have you been listening to?

Just found out my brother got me tickets to see Metric as a late birthday gift! Pretty awesome!

No idea what Metric is (I'll youtube it in a few) but any live show is great! Grats, doggy!

I'm currently in the youtube "rabbit hole" where I just type in a song and then clicky the sidebar until I end up on something ridiculous. I started with Bee Gees "To Love Somebody" and have gone on to...well...everything, really. Not as fun as Serbian rap but still fun!

Speaking of live shows I blindy went to a show earlier this week. It was a brazilian guitarist named Celso Machado. Good stuff

I listened to both Celso Machado and Metric after I got out of my rabbit hole (I ended with Joan Jett's version of Crimson and Clover) Both are right up my alley. Celso Machado reminds me of Bola Sete which is always fantastic. Metric is REALLY good too. I bet their live shit rocks. Even in the official video(Gold Guns Girls) I could tell their style lends well to live. Very Rainer Maria-esque. Sorry to compare what you guys showed to me with shit I know. Only way I know how to relate.

This talk of live shows reminded me of something that pisses me off in this country. We're already lacking in touring international artists in this country (even a band as big as Radiohead will almost NEVER play a show in Canada outside of Toronto or Vancouver) and the government is now proposing a law that says venues have to pay $425 per member (including crew members) in order to book groups like this. That would be absolutely terrible for venues here. The place where I saw Celso Machado is already taking donations to keep running. Places like that would be forced to play canadian music all the time or shut down.

Things like that seem to be standard here.

What's the argument for paying that $425?

ajam, I didn't get to watch The White Stripes one last time because they decided to tour every province of Canada first. Then they broke up. So you win that war.

Trip's suggestion of Metric got me in the mood for indie-pop (is that a thing?). So now I'm listening to Cursive's "Art Is Hard" and other Saddle Creek type toons. Although AJ has me listening to "Deeper Shade Of Soul" because he re-introduced me to my love of Latin music. I mean, come on, I learned how to play lead from that shit and the abandoned it. I'm a terrible person!

Thanks! You do as well! The singer just put out his own album, and the cover alone makes me want to listen to it. Can't recall the name of it right now though, which was also funny from what I remember.

So The Ugly Organ is a reference to his junk? With the theme of the album being heartbreak and depression I thought it was a reference to his heart. Either way it's a must have for any collection.

I do not envy having to make that decision.

I like to listen to music that I classify as "fall music" during fall. It might be weird, but I always pick what season an album sounds like. Fall sounding records are always my favorite. I classify them as dirty sounding records full of melancholy, and are often rich with acoustic style songs. Much like the season, fall sounding records are the best!

I went with 2013 mix of In Utero, which is the best album ever. Maybe tomorrow I'll do the The Ugly Organ.

Nope never heard of this Lorde character. I'll look into some youtube stuff.

I guess I'm EMO. I like down beats and potent lyrical melodies. I should've known 20 years ago when my pre-teen self discovered "The Very Best of Cream" vinyl my mom's husband had and wore out "White Room".

So, now that I'm EMO do I have to cut my hair/beard/wrists? Can I now not listen to lady GaGa or Serbian rap? Or is that hipster? Do hipster and EMO intersect? What pants do I wear now or are my adidas ironic enough to be cool?

These are the repercussions of saying, "hey, I dig that song" when Sleigh Bells "Infinity Guitars" plays. And here I thought I was just some has-been musician digging some jams. That'll show me!

People say Bright Eyes is emo, but I don't really see it that way. In the end isn't all "real" music emo? Shouldn't someone be singing about something they really feel connected to/about?

I can admit to being a douche about music when I was a kid, but now can't I just listen to shit and jam? I mean, I'm all for discussion, but ragging on someone for listening to whatever they dig is balls. I guess it's the same as the Miley Cyrus thing that was all over the "news". I know nothing about that crap but if it jams, it jams. She rode a wrecking ball or something? Sounds fun to me, but was the music bad?...hmmm...now I must investigate...

"Emo" is about as good a term for a music genre as "grunge", which is not at all. I bet some slacker assholes came up with that term and it just stuck.

In other news, the new Pearl Jam and Korn albums are great.

Avid is, perhaps, the best pop culture interpreter ever. I bet you kick ass to work with.

I listened to the Miley Cyrus song. It is, in fact, called Wrecking Ball. She doesn't sound bad if that's really her singing. The lip-synching in the video is a little disturbing. Other than that, I think she did something and something else happened or whatever. Not too sure since now I'm jamming Snowblind. Kinda makes you forget everything else.

Checking out these new Kevin Devine albums tonight. Will report back with how they are on a scale of rad to bogus.
