Re: What have you been reading?

I haven't really been digging my latest book (A Matter of Time), so I decided to try something else. I've never read the Lord of the Rings series, so I figured I would read them. I did read The Hobbit in middle school, but don't really remember it, so I'm starting there.

It was just a good old fashioned ribbing. So simple, so cleverly constructed. Now future readers will never know.

I am a creature of subtlety Bret, and now, as you said, no one will know my genius.

ALAS!

Also, started The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. Anyone else here a Murakami fan?

Read Divergent. Basically the new sci-fy teen book, pretty damn good though. Has a future with five factions based on whether the people value truth, peace, knowledge, courage, or selflessness. At 16 people pick which one to go to after an evaluation. It's a really interesting concept and I'm excited to see where it goes in the next two books.

Been reading The Book of Lost things. I think some people on this forum could get into it potentially. If I had to sum it up in a sentence I'd say: Pan's Labyrinth in book form.

Slowly rereading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep again during my free periods which really contrasts with my first read that only took a few days.

I'd recommend the book if you're ever looking for something new. The writing of the book is fairly simple, but it covers various themes and philosophical questions.

I read through most of it when I was a kid and had friends who loved it, am aiming to tackle it again soon. It's a classic of sci-fi.

I have a paperback copy that I've owned since junior high. Intrigued by it but I've felt it was too daunting in the past. I may feel different now, although when I get around to it is another matter.

Still progressing slowly but surely through Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and the plot twist at the halfway point blew my mind. It is crazy how evil a certain character is.

I stopped by the local library last Sunday and picked up a few paperbacks for $3: two Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child and Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

Yeah, when I got bit by the reading bug again, Dune was on my list to read since it is so highly praised. When I went on my last book buying expedition, I saw it and decided to buy it. Seems pretty interesting so far. I have only read about 40 pages though.

I've considered picking up Dune while wandering through the bookstore but I never did it. I'll be interested in seeing how it is

I'm trying to read and get away from the computer a bit more so I started up Burmese Days. It's not very comparable to 1984 or Animal Farm but I think Orwell's other stuff has some great bits, too. Haven't gotten far enough to make up my mind on it, but it reminds me of Shooting an Elephant, which I read for a class once and really enjoyed. It's an e-book though, so I guess my plan backfired

I'm reading Ventus...I think some people in this forum would like it. I can only describe it as a mix between hard, proper sci fi and fantasy. And it sets up how it can do this very ingeniously.

Might take another stab at Dune this year as well...

Lol.

I get recommendations from friends or from goodreads and just kind of go from there. Also look at a lot of lists, I suppose.

Been reading Jim Henson's biography. That guy was a legend, also a well written biography, I would recommend it for Henson fans.

I started the Veronica Mars book. Pretty good. The dialogue feels perfect so far. I can totally see her saying most of the stuff in the book.

Also I joined Goodreads to track this sort of stuff. Not sure what I'm doing on there yet. If any friends want to add me on there though I'm the same name as on here.

I know personally how satisfying it is when one of your favorite shows gets translated to a book well. Since the Buffy comics have some of the writers from the show they nail the dialogue, which really makes it that much more immersive. What's the premise of Veronica Mars? I might give it a try at some point in my life.

It is basically about a teenage private eye. The show has a bit of a noir feel to it. She takes on all kinds of cases, but each season has a grander overarching mystery/whodunnit kind of thing. It is pretty sweet!

Gonna take a break on Walking Dead now that the All Out War arc's over. The new stuff looks interesting, but I don't need to get it issue by issue like AOW made me want. Think I'll get into the regular Amazing Spiderman comics though since I really like the direction they're going.
