Re: Movies You've Watched Recently

Post by AlexC-25 on Sun Apr 14, 2013 2:35 am

I've just finished watching The Hunger Games. I really liked the book, so I was excited to watch the film. Let me say that I wasn't dissapointed at all and maybe some would say bull, but I loved the film.

Now, while it lacked some of the character development of the book and given that it's a film adaptation, there are some things that they had to leave from the book or change to make it work for the film, but otherwise, the movie follows the book very well and even with the lack of character development and exposition from the book, because I had already read it, I knew everything that was going to happen and I guess the changes and omitions they made never bothered me and actually fited the movie very well. Besides it has great music, the acting is great, the setting really matched everything that was in the book and well, part of I why loved the film was not only experiencing the book, but also the emotional punch the movie gave and feeling the pain, the joy and sadness of the many characters in the book, and specially of the main character Katniss.

So yes, I loved the film and I can't wait to read the second book of the trilogy.

I saw Oblivion.

It's actually a really good movie. It's not going to change the way you think about life and you'll probably forget about it in six months. But it's one of the most enjoyable scifi action movies I've seen.

Solid plot with a little mystery, decent acting, good action, great visuals, a little bit a thoughtful message. And without spoiling anything it's the best robot movie I've seen in terms of logic. I'm always super picky about robot movies.

I want to see it, for the same reasons...doesn't look amazing but i like easy watches. That said, it's so expensive to see movies here.

I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about the Ratchet and Clank movie.. but I'm super excited. I love that Insomniac seems to be so involved in it, it's gotta be awesome!

Yeah I'm really excited. The game writer wrote the script which I feel is a big plus. And the video was really funny.

I'm excited for it too. Also, calling it now: Nefarious is going to appear after the credits.

This was rumored/sort of leaked awhile ago along with the Heavenly Sword movie (these guys are also making one for HS that is straight to DVD). Also rumored/leaked with those two were Jak and Sly movies. So maybe we will see them too. Also this is sure to mean a big Ratchet game to go alongside it on PS4 I'd think.

For sure, means this movie might not be a complete disaster. I'm interested in it but cautious.

Reminder they were planning on doing a Shadow of the Colossus movie that we thankfully haven't heard about in forever.

Drek was a great villain. And it just shows to me that they want sequels. Besides, the first one will be mostly focused with Ratchet and Clank so Drek's a better villain for that. He's fun without stealing the spotlight like Nefarious would. So when they do get a sequel Nefarious can get as much focus as he needs.

I finally got around to watching Brave yesterday...meh. It was a good set up and hte theme in the middle of it wasn't bad I was just surprised by how...little they did with it. Just characters going unexplored, conflicts brought up and dropped. The pacing was weird. Not horrible but just...meh. Animation was really nice though, as always.

Watched Secret of Nimh...not sure how that movie flew under my radar for so long. Great animation, cool story. Was really good. Especially watching that and Brave back to back seeing how MUCH was fit into Nimh and how little into Brave with Brave being the longer film...

OH MY GAWD you just watched the Secret of Nimh for the first time? Wow, that was one of my favorites as a kid even though it was a bit scary at the time. That owl was just horrifying. Awesome movie though, I need to find my DVD and watch it now.

The owl...is SO SCARY. Scary and awesome. It felt like one of those old fantasy novels staring all the mice that I can't remember the name of...red...something. But in movie form and without dumbing it down. Good stuff.

The dialogue was really cool as well.

The Secret of Nimh was a big hit for my childhood as well. It still packs quite a punch as far as intensity and animation quality. Too bad Don Bluth never made anything as good as this (I'm sure those American Tail movies don't hold up).

@Krubixcube; I really liked Brave, but yeah, it's not the best one from Pixar and definitly not an Oscar winner (It should have gone to Ralph or Paranorman, IMO). It had a great setup for the mother and daughter relationship, which is one of the strongest points for the film, but the rest with the father and the clans felt like "YOU GOT YOUR DREAMWORKS IN MY PIXAR", and yeah, sometimes they didn't explored the movie better and the pacing wasn't that good.

And let me give you a high five for Secret of NIHM "Gives Timber a High Five"

Occasionally I do this thing where I watch various movies referenced on The Simpsons. So I watched One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Well... That movie is gooood. The ending feels kinda cliche by now, though

I rewatched one of my favorite Hong Kong films: Infernal Affairs. That movie is damn good. I'm one of those weird bastards that thinks The Departed has its right to exist though, it took a very different direction with the same story, they stand alone.

I think I'm the only person in the world who thinks that.

I enjoyed The Departed but I think Infernal Affairs was tighter in its plot and pacing and was just as intense. In that sense, I think it's a better film.

My daughter watches all the various Pixar movies, and I'm usually more than okay with that - but when she picks Brave, I kind of sigh, because I find it to be so below Pixar's standards. It's on the same level as Cars 2, which I despise.

The animation is, of course, beautiful - but the story is so boring. I get the message, but I feel like so much was left behind. When did the archery go, half way through the movie? At first, Miradea is a bad-ass, and then, later on, it just kind of fades away. No arrows now, viewers.

Re: Movies You've Watched Recently

So I watched yesterday Iron Man 2.

Now, maybe I should give it another try, but i'm going to say that I REALLY thought the first Iron Man was average. Really, I didn't know why people went crazy with that movie. But despite that, I rented to see Iron Man 2, so I could watch Iron Man 3 this weekend. I think I won't make friends with this estatement, but I liked more the second film than the first ("Dodges tomatoe"). I'll admit the second film wasn't perfect. It didn't explore more ideas, some characters needed development (Black Widow and the villain comes to mind), some jokes felt flat, while I can remember the battles, they weren't that impressive and I just simply wanted to punch Sam Rockwell's character to the face. That said, the crisis Tony was having with his power source and everything else was very interesting, I liked the mentions of his father Howard Stark, when they were good, the jokes and battles were good, some cool special effects, good acting and I guess, even its already released (MILD SPOILER) the ending stinger that Thor was coming was pretty good.

TL,DR; Not perfect, but still a good movie. Liked more than the first film ("dodges brick").

I can't watch some parts of Iron Man 2. It seems like it's too preoccupied with laying massive amounts of groundwork for The Avengers to deal with the 87 different storylines it has going on elsewhere. It's kind of a mess. It has good parts, and Sam Rockwell is kick-ass (no care wha you say!), but it's not as good as the first - which is a good movie, even though it's climactic ending is more of a thud than anything...

Also, having Whiplash end up in a powersuit was lame. I fear for an enemy in IM3 wearing power armor. It's so dumb.
