What about the story do you think holds up well today? What does not hold up so well?

What about the visuals do you think holds up today? What does not hold up so well?

Which of the three species (gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutang) is your favorite both visually and by their role in society?

Which character is your favorite and why?

What aspects of the world do you enjoy? What aspects do you not enjoy as much?

Did you know about the twist before you saw the movies? What did you think of it then? What do you think of it now?

If you guys want after this, I can do questions about the sequels too. I don't mention it much, but I'm actually a huge fan of this series.

I don't think the collection has the new Franco movie, just the older ones. I'll check today while I'm there.

Great, now I want Planet of the Muppets, joining Spectacular Spider-Man season 3 and Danny Pudi playing Mysterio in things I want but will never have.

It's simple: Give a glimpse of what goes on in my head, which unfortunately does not coincide with what Hollywood CEOs think will make them money often enough. Occasionally the two will be one in the same, as shown by The Lego Movie, but that's not often enough. Same applies with what goes on in your head, just replace The Lego Movie with Pacific Rim.

What about the story do you think holds up well today? What does not hold up so well?

What about the visuals do you think holds up today? What does not hold up so well?

The sets and makeup are all still...great. The landscapes they used (looks like Monument Valley...Grand Canyon maybe?) are beautiful as well. Obviously some of the makeup isn't as good, which is odd because some characters are amazing and others are not. This was made in the same year as 2001 and the monkey makeup is very good in both...was a good year for monkey-make-up guys.

As for stuff that doesn't hold up, Planet of the Apes is another one of those frustrating movies from the mid-late 60's that cinematographers were still shooting stuff in a way that's lit better for black and white. Give it a shot, turn off the saturation on your TV and the film looks AMAZING. Another film that stands out in my memory is The Bridge on the River Kwai, looks amazing in black and white.

Which of the three species (gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutang) is your favorite both visually and by their role in society?

The Orangutans are interesting to me...they religious zealots, I dig their tired-old-man look too.

Which character is your favorite and why?

Dr. Zaius actually. The fact that he knows the truth and yet denies it idealistically is really interesting to me.

What aspects of the world do you enjoy? What aspects do you not enjoy as much?

It all kind of felt a bit small, like the entirity of hte planet is 10 huts, and I always felt for a society that isn't advanced enough for flight and yet advanced enough to do lobotomies it seemed a bit off. But I LOVE the nuclear waste desserts. I mean, they never state it out right but it's hinted at very strongly and I just really love that idea.

Did you know about the twist before you saw the movies? What did you think of it then? What do you think of it now?

I did, it's hard to avoid in pop culture but it actually kind of makes it more interesting as a social commentary knowing that man went through this cycle, nuclear warred themselves out of existence and then went back to the stone age while the apes rose. It's cool, and hte film definitely doesn't play in a way that the twist is the payoff for everything that came before, it just adds another layer.

I'll also say, I haven't watched through the movie properly since I was small and it's hard to forget how good and adult the movie is when it's parodied all the time. The pacing is typical late-1960's, early 70's AWESOME in that you don't see an ape for the first 35 minutes of the movie. We  care about the characters, we get interested in their predicament and it doesn't just feel like the filmmakers were rushing to show some awesome monkey action.

It's a great movie, thanks for giving me the excuse to watch it again!

I keep forgetting I still have my blu-ray rental of this. Work has been so fucking crazy this week that I may not finish the questionnaire until Friday or Saturday. I just want a stress-free evening where I've got plenty of time to watch, ponder and then write about the film.

My set of the movies should come next week so I'll rewatch it then too. Would you guys want to watch the 70's sequels also? I'd say they average out pretty good.

What about the story do you think holds up well today? What does not hold up so well?

It holds up amazingly well. I haven't seen this since I was a teenager and while I can remember the first 30-45 minutes and the final shot, its everything else that I didn't recall. It's one of those films where you can't tell if future films were planned or not; usually not, since sequels are dependent on the success of the first film (according to Wikipedia, future films were not initially planned). There are certain things we are told about (I'll call it) Ape Earth and certain things are withheld. Instead of thinking something was lacking, I felt the film did a good job of setting up the world, the mythology and telling a contained story, even leaving an vague, uncertain ending wide open.

The themes of imprisonment, discrimination, cruelty, the argument of faith vs science, disillusionment, compassion....all of these are tackled very well within the story.

What about the visuals do you think holds up today? What does not hold up so well?

Obviously there have been improvements in makeup since then (as with any technology or craft) but I'm not the kind of person who scoffs at effects work simply because it isn't believable. What I see (as I did in the first Star Wars film) is tech or craft being pushed to its then breaking point. John Chambers' make-up designs allowed the actors to still be expressive (pay close attention to the eyes, Kim Hunter and James Whitmore's in particular) through their speech patterns and body language.

All of the ape actors did very well, except for the actor who played Lucius. There is something about teen actors from 50s to late 60s American cinema where the whiny teen stereotype was enforced a lot, especially in films where youth isn't the main focus. I think I found his voice to be very annoying.

Leon Shamroy's photography is fantastic, especially in the early sequences where Taylor and his astronaut buddies are making their way out of the desert. Jerry Goldsmith's score is effective, not going for any melodies or sweeping cues. There's an arrangement of different kinds of percussion and discordant sounds that provides character to the Ape village and the disorienting experience of it all. Goldsmith's score for Patton (with the same director of this film) was similar in some respects.

Which of the three species (gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutang) is your favorite both visually and by their role in society?

To be honest, I wasn't paying as much attention to this aspect. I suppose the chimpanzees since Cornelious and Zira belong to that category (correct me if I'm wrong); on the basis of this film, they're given the opportunity to be the intellectuals or creative minds of the society. The orangutans struck me as the old guard, tied to tradition and inflexible, stubborn curmudgeons.

Which character is your favorite and why?

Kim Hunter's Zira. Zira is arguably the most compassionate of the Apes and I saw her as the crucial connection between the viewer and the Apes; if we don't care about her, we don't care about the Apes. It leads to the fact that they are not one-dimensional and cartoonishly hostile.

What aspects of the world do you enjoy? What aspects do you not enjoy as much?

The set design of the ape village is amazing. It looks habitable, lived-in and a sense of history about it. As Taylor makes an escape attempt and is making his way through the village, you get to see all sorts of identifiable locals: a marketplace, a church, a museum. All of that plays into the fact that ape culture is reminiscent of human culture.

There's not much else of the world that we see. We don't know if there are other tribes or settlements of apes or if its just apes and humans on the planet. The story isn't concerned with that nor does it need it.

Did you know about the twist before you saw the movies? What did you think of it then? What do you think of it now?

I actually didn't know about the twist when I first saw it. Its a sad, gut-punch of an ending. And it answers a big question as to what happened to the Earth. On this viewing, I tried to pay more attention to Zeus' closing remarks to both Taylor and Zira. He knew what Taylor was going to find. No wonder that he feared Taylor.

The first thing I thought of was John Hurt's makeup in The Elephant Man. It doesn't allow for a lot of expression but the make-up only does part of the job. It's up to the actor to fill in the rest with their vocal delivery and body language. Is it as impressive as the Rick Baker makeup in Burton's remake? No. Was it just as immersive for me? Yes. I don't know what else to say.

Post by volvocrusher Sun Jul 27, 2014 8:10 pm

What about the story do you think holds up well today? What does not hold up so well?

A lot holds up really well. Heston's view of mankind is a great arc, as he starts to see the worth in humanity when he sees how much worse the apes are, only to find that he was right all along at the very end.

The religion vs science aspect is really well done too, how when religion is the central part of a society it will cause fear from the truth. Great stuff there. Though the idea that this planet can be a different one and not Earth when so much stuff is similar does not hold up as well nowadays.

What about the visuals do you think holds up today? What does not hold up so well?

I wouldn't say the apes look like ones we have, but they do look like something that could spring up and evolve from our current apes. Like if you flung me far into the future, I could see creatures that more or less look like those roaming around, so that works well.

Which of the three species (gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutan) is your favorite both visually and by their role in society?

Orangutan. Love their design the most and especially how they demonstrate the corruption in the ape society. They are both leading religious and government affairs and demonstrate how these two shouldn't go together.

Which character is your favorite and why?

Dr. Zaius. I love how he demonstrates everything wrong with the ape society and why someone would be so anti-progress if they don't like the truth.

What aspects of the world do you enjoy? What aspects do you not enjoy as much?

We didn't see enough of it, but I loved how weird all of the architecture looked. It was kind of like a cave, but you could still tell a somewhat advanced society created it.

Did you know about the twist before you saw the movies? What did you think of it then? What do you think of it now?

Yeah, my dad told me before I saw it. But it's not like Darth Vader being Luke's father which was mostly there for shock value, this fit into the story flawlessly. Heston's whole character arc is realizing how he was wrong about humanity, how despite our flaws we were not doing half bad compared to these apes. Then he sees the Statue of Liberty and realizes he was right all along.
