Top 5 Remasters/Remakes

Post by SanAndreasX on Mon Aug 28, 2017 2:23 pm

Since this is a big thing, and I've been playing a lot of these lately, this might be an interesting topic. Five best remasters/remakes, hopefully ones that took an already great game and made it better, or even took a previously mediocre/poor game and made it bearable.

My top 5:

1. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered: Mostly cosmetic changes, but they upped it to 60 FPS and cleaned up the resolution, plus all DLC is included
2. Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age: The job license boards really add a lot to the game, along with a lot of rebalancing and tweaks that really improved an already great game.
3. Super Mario All-Stars: This is like the prototype of a good console remake.
4. Metroid: Zero Mission: It's the definitive version of the original game now.
5. Wind Waker HD: A lot of extra content was added, the graphics prettied up, and some of the less popular aspects of the game were streamlined, such as the ability to sail any direction and speed up the sailing.

In no order:

Super Mario All-Stars
Doom (2016) - one of the most satisfying shooters ever made. Well-designed, well-paced, and always has one more goody up its sleeve.
Space Invaders Extreme - I played this quite a bit during my PSP days. Looked/sounded great, controlled well and plenty of modes.
Ocarina of Time 3D - currently playing this on 3DS and it truly is the best way to play it.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence - yeah, the bonus features (games/cinematics) are great but the FUCKING CAMERA WAS FIXED.

I'm gonna make two lists because I'd say a remake is when the game gets overhauled with a new engine while a remaster is a new coat of paint with some tweaks.
Remake
1. Metroid: Zero Mission- Modernizes the original with sharp controls, some of gaming's best boss fights, and a great epilogue.
2. Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver- Only below MZM because the originals are still playable, but man what a perfect remake. Put it at the point when the mechanics were perfected along with fun touches like letting any Pokemon follow you around like Pikachu in Yellow.
3. Donkey Kong (Gameboy)- Starts off the same then goes in a completely different direction with a great puzzle platformer
4. Tomb Raider Anniversary- Another game where the original is borderline unplayable to me but the remake is a great time. Takes the best elements from the original and Legend
5. Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy- Not too many new features or additions, but what is here is awesome and I really love these games.

Remaster
1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD- The game looks fantastic in HD and fixes the worst parts with the sailing and that Triforce quest.
2. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection- A bit cheating since it's five games on one disc, but I'd need to put Subsistence on here anyways for going above and beyond with a new camera while Peace Walker finally had analog controls.
3. Halo: The Master Chief Collection- This was awful at launch from what I heard, but when I got around to it, it was really damn great. I'm not a huge fan of 343's art direction compared to Bungie's, but it still looks really nice with the new visuals and the shooting is now so smooth.
4. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection- Was between this and TLOU, but the 60 FPS upgrade really helps Uncharted that much more than TLOU so I'm going with this one.
5. Sonic CD- Part of it was just me being so happy I could finally play this game. But adding Tails in was a really nice addition.

Would the 2016 Doom count as a remake or a remaster? Seems like it's own game, but I could be wrong there.

I'd go with

Remaster:
1. Shadow of the Colossus
2. God of War Collection (1 and 2)
3. The Last of Us Remastered - only gotten a bit into it but the extra FPS and resolution makes a difference in an already gorgeous game.
4. Resident Evil 4 - Still a GREAT game. Even better in widescreen and HD.

From what I've SEEN the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy seems great but I don't own it so...

Remake:
1. Pokemon Heartgold & Soul Silver (my favorite generation of Pokemon)
2. Punch Out Wii - full disclosure I haven't PLAYED this one, but I've watched friends play the hell out of it and it looks like a ton of fun.

That's all I got :-p

Resident Evil 4 on modern hardware is great, but I can't put it on any list like this if there's no Gamecube controller support.

My favorite remake is Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Some of the later levels weren't handled that well, but those were never my favorites anyway, I guess. I like the graphical updates and prefer the new control scheme. My favorite Tomb Raider.

A lot of nice remasters over the years, but hard to separate them. I guess I was a big fan of the God of War PS3 ones just because that is how I first played them.
