We are about a month out from E3, so I thought I'd make a thread to track any rumors we have heard and allow us to talk about any wishes or predictions we might have or just games we want to see more of.

Wishes - Final Fantasy IX HD remaster, the one that Steam and phones got. Probably asked for this last year, still want it. A new Killzone game. I've fallen hard into love again with Killzone multiplayer.

Predictions: Smash and Mario Maker getting ported to Switch, at least one coming 2018 (probably both). 3rd pillar Pokemon coming to Switch and 3DS this fall. SNES Mini. Nintendo announces Virtual Console will either be on Switch that week or coming when they launch the paid model. Paid model will be $30. New Pikmin on Switch.
Microsoft shows teaser trailer for Halo 6, will release 2018, Reach getting remastered for XB1/PC, will lead into MCC coming to PC. Scorpio costs $550, a new Forza will show it off.
Sony announces The Order 2, will show promise, but people will be weary. FFVII remake will be shown, details will come on its episodic model. Sucker Punch will have a new IP, won't be open world (only thing I can predict).
Bioware's new IP is not what people want at all, causes arguments of if it looks good vs that's not what they should be making, both sides will be obnoxious.

Hopes: Nintendo announces Gamecube on Virtual Console Switch, with Luigi's Mansion on there day one on there day one. New Metroid game for 2018 with Metroid Prime Trilogy HD for summer 2017. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD coming to Switch. New IP by Sakurai. New IP by Platinum that's basically Scalebound again.
Microsoft announces Halo by Platinum that focuses on energy sword and gravity hammer (won't ever happen after Scalebound). Original Xbox games on XB1.
Sony announces new Sly, Ape Escape, and Jak games.
Kotor and Jade Empire HD.

My big worry is that the Switch will be nothing but ports and remasters because they need new games. Hopefully I'm proved wrong. So my hope is for some new Switch games to convince me to actually get it.

Honestly don't have any huge predictions.

Well Retro and Sakurai are reported to both work on something new so that should be good bare minimum. Plus ports are actually good for you since you never bought a Wii U. I'm fine because I'm a sucker and will double dip for portability but I hope for Trips sake there's more

For Nintendo, I mostly want them to show support for the system beyond this year. They pretty much took a year off supporting their last home console. They must have been pushing most of their internal support to the Switch. They should be able to convince me that the future of your system is bright. At least tease some of the projects coming in 2018.

I'm hoping Retro is working on a new IP. I'd like another big action/adventure series in the vein of Zelda/Metroid from them (not in structure per se, just using them as examples of grand action/adventure games I have in mind).

I'd like to see another title like Captain Toad. A smaller game that leverages an IP or perhaps lesser-used character in a new odd way.

I'd like them to ditch the 3DS support for the most part, but I realize this sounds slightly selfish of me sort of like my stance on cross-gen stuff when the PS4 started. It is hard to want to play something on the 3DS still when I could be playing it on the Switch. Nintendo would have a much easier time supporting one system than two of course as well.

I think they probably need to solve the d-pad issue on the portable mode even if I'd be pretty stubborn about not wanting to buy another set of Joy-Con. It is hard to get excited about Virtual Console or say a Mario Maker port without a proper d-pad on the portable system.

Any of these games would be cool to see as perhaps those 2018 games teased though I'm not sure if Nintendo is keen on teasing far out stuff or not:
-A new 2D Mario that ditches the New aesthetic (they probably wouldn't announce this until after Odyssey, but I'd prefer it to a Mario Maker port)
-A Luigi's Mansion similar to Dark Moon, but that wouldn't have you repeating the levels the way it did. Backtracking where new stuff popped up would be fine, but handle it better than DM. I really liked the way it played and the mechanics though.
-Maybe a new Animal Crossing that finally takes the series in a new direction.
-A new Kirby or Yoshi game. I usually enjoy these, even some of the lesser games in the series.

Not expecting all that obviously, just brainstorming some things that would be nice to see. That was long. I will come back for Sony and MS and third-parties in another post.

I'm unsure if they'll do something for Kirby on Switch this year. He normally shows up later and they have three Kirby games already coming to the 3DS. I'd like to be proven wrong and get an original game. It is Kirby's 25th anniversary too so they might have something planned for Switch.

Personally I'd like to see Kirby and Yoshi make the jump to 3D on the Switch. Think there's a ton of potential with both and gameplay wise Yoshi and the main Kirby games have been mostly more of the same. They do a good job of it, but a 3D jump would shake these up in the right way. I know Kirby's getting a 3D one on the 3DS too, but it looks more Mario 3D Land/World esque where it's very similar to the 2D games rather than really going all out for it.

Yeah I'd welcome a 3D Yoshi or Kirby. That Kirby on 3DS looks neat, but as you said not fully 3D and not copy-ability focused either from what I recall.

For Microsoft, I guess I mostly just want them to show some interesting exclusives. Partly just to make my Xbox One more useful, but it is really where they are lacking. Particularly from a first-party perspective. They lag so far behind the other two console makers in that area. Phil mentioned recently that they were making a bigger effort in first-party development. I don't know if we'd see that at this E3, but I'd hope so. They have traditionally relied on 3rd party partners and those have largely dwindled away. Even Remedy signed a deal with a small publisher recently to make a couple games. I know Remedy games aren't hits, but they are nice games to have in your portfolio I think. And I'm obviously looking for stuff that isn't Halo or Forza. Also apparently Halo 6 won't be there. More the reason to impress people with other stuff.

I guess the big thing at their show will be Scorpio. I have no interest in it given my apathy for the Xbox One, but I am curious to see what it might mean for the whole iterative console trend. The Pro was such a small upgrade it didn't change much of anything in the grander scheme of how I view consoles/generations/etc. The Scorpio is promising a much bigger upgrade, so maybe it will shake things up more.

Sony has had two really awesome press conferences the past couple years. But most of their internal developers have either just recently released a game or they have already announced their next game. Sucker Punch is the one that neither applies to. They are working on a new IP based on everything I have heard, so I imagine that will be one of their big announcements. Anything else big is a bit harder to predict. I expect we will see more on God of War, Spider-man and Days Gone which will be cool. I'm still curious how God of War's new perspective will work in the context of platforming/setpiece type stuff, so I look forward to another look at that especially. Spider-man we haven't actually gotten a good first look at so that too.

Obviously, I'd love another Jak game. Like always, that would be my biggest wish. With the upcoming re-releases on PS4 and the success of Ratchet on PS4, it feels more possible this year than normal. I can at least dream about it for another month! Sly would be cool too. I'm not sure what else. Something I can't predict that really surprises me I guess.

Sony's conferences always have exciting stuff, but they're always so far away and have too much of the hype train behind them (see No Man's Sky and The Order). I'm hoping we see mostly stuff that will release within the next year.

I'm most interested in whatever Retro's doing since it doesn't seem like a new Donkey Kong game. Could be Metroid or not, I just hope it fills a similar sort of niche for Nintendo that the Prime games did if nobody's working on those. And I wanna see if any of those other rumoured Switch games from a while back are real (Since the Mario/Rabbids game seems almost confirmed at this point despite not showing up when everyone said it would).

I want to see a new Sony IP with original ideas that can surprise us like Horizon Zero Dawn.

On the third-party front, I'm curious to see the new Far Cry. Sounds like it is actually modern day Montana and not Wild West. Honestly I think modern-day is a better fit for Far Cry. I missed a lot of the modern weapons and vehicles in Primal. They can still have horse-riding in there.

Seems like Devil May Cry 5 may be a possibility. That subgenre is a bit under-represented, so I'd welcome that. I'm interested to see that Mario/Rabbids game just because it sounds really ridiculous. I guess I'm curious to at least see the new Assassin's Creed because of the setting, but if there is naval combat it doesn't exactly seem like the fresh start I think the series needs.

Sounds like the new Tomb Raider won't be there based on dev statements, but it could be subterfuge. Perhaps we get a tease about some of those new Marvel projects. Maybe Rocksteady's next game. Hadn't really thought too much about third-party stuff until now.

I'm hoping they show something on that Star wars game cause I'm worried. Maybe it's just because we didn't see anything on Mass Effect Andromeda for so long, but now knowing a game exists without seeing anything on it for years has my alarm bells ringing.

I honestly don't think the Mario + Rabbids game is such a bad idea. I know it is turn-based so isn't up my alley, but I'm still interested to see it. I mean worst case scenario, it is a bad Mario spinoff (it won't be the first bad game he has appeared in) that isn't using up much of Nintendo's development resources since it is mostly a Ubi thing. I get some people just hate Rabbids and are disgusted by the idea I guess, but I honestly think it is worth having an open mind about.

I'm not interested either because turn based strategy isn't my thing but I'm also open to the idea of a crossover. I really just blame Minions for this backlash.

Less than a week away! The schedule is a bit different this time with Microsoft and EA moving earlier to the weekend. Better for people who work weekdays to watch I guess:

EA: Saturday 3PM Eastern
Microsoft: Sunday 5PM Eastern
Bethesda: Monday 12AM Eastern
PC Gaming Show: Monday 1PM Eastern
Ubisoft: Monday 4PM Eastern
Sony: Monday 9PM Eastern
Nintendo: Tuesday 12PM Eastern

A couple other recent rumors/leaks included a Life is Strange prequel (which sounds unappealing for a number of reasons) and a Tales from the Borderlands Season 2 (which I'd be really excited for).

Well Life is Strange is getting a sequel (though I believe with a new cast of characters, so anthology style I guess). That will be by Dontnod, the original dev. Here is the story about the prequel which would supposedly involve Chloe and Rachel from another dev:

http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a830012/life-is-strange-prequel-coming/

A prequel in a narrative heavy, choice-laden game like this where we know how it ends (more or less) seems like a bad call to me. Plus the new dev. Obviously I am being somewhat presumptuous here, but just my initial thoughts.

Saw this today. EA will have 8 games at their conference (plus some surprises... whatever that means). These 6 are confirmed to be among them:

- Battlefront 2
- Need For Speed: Payback
- FIFA
- Madden
- NBA Live
- Battlefield 1

People more knowledgeable than me suggested these are the other two:
- Hazelight's game (the Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons developer)
- BioWare's new IP (Project Dylan which is not an RPG and has been compared to Destiny and The Division I guess because of its multiplayer aspects? Not really sure. Just kind of looking into it now.)

I thought Brothers was really neat, so I look forward to seeing their next game. EA is probably the worst as far as announcing stuff too early though. Hopefully that wouldn't be the case with a more indie game like that. Though I don't know if we've heard from Fe since last year.

So A Way Out looks really, really cool. Not sure if I'll get it day one, but awesome idea for a game. Anthem has a nice look to it, but like I said before, me and Bioware aren't on good terms. Wonder what it plays like though. Battlefield DLC looks good. Will probably get it cheap down the line. Battlefront I'm gonna wait and see on. Don't trust EA anymore. It's cool FIFA Switch has all the features, but I wish they were putting Madden on there.

The EA conference was better than I expected (though to be fair my expectations were pretty low). A Way Out was the highlight. The way they are building around the splitscreen looks so good. Looks like a lot of variety in the gameplay too. Really looking forward to that game.

I liked the look of The Longshot story mode type thing they are added to Madden. NFS looks fairly fun too. I will probably rent both of those. I'm glad Anthem is getting an actual gameplay demo. With EA I was expecting like a studio tour type of thing!

Post by TripOpt55 Sun Jun 11, 2017 8:38 pm

I was pretty underwhelmed by Microsoft's press conference. I think their issue continues to be exclusive software and they didn't really change my mind here despite their efforts to call everything an exclusive of some kind. Obviously I come from the perspective of someone who owns all the consoles. For people that just own an Xbox One, there certainly isn't any shortage of games to play. And they showed plenty here. But when I play the comparison game, which I can't help but do at something like E3, they come up short I guess.

Hard to sell the 4K upgrade on a stream on my non-4K TV, so I don't know what to make of the power for the new console. I think the Xbox One X is a poor name choice with an Xbox One S out there. Who knows though.

I'm glad to see the Ori sequel announced. I thought the Life is Strange trailer was good. It reminded me that the atmosphere and music were a big part of why I enjoyed LiS, but I still think this sort of game as this sort of prequel isn't going to work real well. I will definitely play it though. The Last Night looks really sweet. Like Blade Runner meets Flackback or something. Anthem looked good, but I don't play much online co-op these days. Same with Ashen I suppose.

I wanted to be more impressed with Assassin's Creed. I read all the info from Game Informer and it sounded so different, but the demo didn't feel that different I guess. Maybe I need to see more to really get the feel for how all these new tweaks change things. I love Egyptian stuff, so the setting really appeals to me. Will keep an eye on it.

And it was really lacking in surprises. Partly because of leaks sure, but partly because a ton of the games shown have been shown before. Oh and Cuphead got a release date. That is good.

Anthem actually interests me most but is the game I'm worried about most. Metro looks awesome. Cuphead getting a release date was nice and Super Luckys Tale looks awesome. Code Vein looks interesting, hoping it's playable on the show. That DBZ fighter looks fantastic and is gorgeous.

Original Xbox games won the show for me. Can't wait to play a bunch on my XB1. That gave me a reason to keep my XB1 but I'd give the show a C+ overall.
