Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I'm reading that you get one free NES or SNES classic per month if you pay for online. But you can only play it for that month.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Everything I've seen and read seems to indicate another underpowered console too. Nintendo is doing so little right with this thing. I can't believe how optimistic I was after the initial trailer and all the rumors to where I am now. I mean I think it can clear the low bar of being more successful than the Wii U, but that is about all the optimism I can muster right now. Someone please give me hope.
Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Yeah I really feel like they shit the bed when it comes to so many of the finer details here.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
There's a lot I'm not happy with, but games and power aren't either of them. I'm seeing this more as a 3DS successor than a Wii U one even though it is replacing both and honestly, I don't really need a Nintendo console with PS4/XB1 power. Now, that might be what makes them relevant in the market again, but if it isn't that's kind of a risk they can't afford to take like Sony/MS. Kind of a strange catch 22. IMO they showed they want to have the 3DS' kind of 3rd party support, not the PS4's. And that's not for everyone, but I can dig it.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I'm not particularly concerned about the power for myself (though I did want to play Zelda at 1080p on my TV, I don't think that is too much to ask of a system releasing in 2017). I just want it to succeed because I want Nintendo to make lots of games for it. I don't think this level of power at $300 plus a bunch of add up minor costs is going to be that appealing to a lot of people. Especially next to similarly priced more powerful boxes bundled with games. Maybe the hybrid aspect will have more broad appeal than I'm expecting though. Or maybe price cuts will be aggressive.
I feel like there is a chance the power may put them in a weird spot in between as well. Too high to appeal to those 3DS style games and too low for ports across PS4/Xbox One.
You said last week, you wanted it to be Xbox One-level power, did it seeming more like a handheld than console with this reveal change your mind on that?
More importantly, how successful do you think the Switch, as they've laid things out so far, will be?

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
My thing with XB1 is I wanted it, but it's not a big deal. It would mean all multiplats could come, but most of them I don't need a Switch version of. I'd love Doom on the go, I'd love Fallout 4 on the go, but I can live without them. Most games I'd get on PC anyways.
As for business prospects, I'm expecting a bit of a slow launch and it to pick up at fall similar to the 3DS. They'll have Mario, they'll probably have a third pillar Pokemon and address the biggest issues plaguing it. This is speculation though, if they don't fix anything between now and then it could spell doom.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I don't care so much about power since Nintendo and *unique* 3rd party support should be pretty good. I still think the less powerful hybrid system is a good idea. What kills me are the accessory prices and paid online, especially since it seems like they still don't know what they're doing with their online service. If it were free, Splatoon 2 would feel like a much bigger deal to me. So instead I'm waiting for Xenoblade/Mario to sell me on the system

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
For myself, I mostly wanted to see Nintendo show more of their hand as far as upcoming projects. We had that conversation a while back where we talked about how system transitions usually either suffer on the back end of the dying system or the launch year of the new system. With the way they quit on the Wii U so early and so completely, I want to see more of the fruits of that decision bearing on the Switch. It didn't even need to be stuff that necessarily appealed to me, but I would have liked to have seen more of what is coming. The third-party stuff was at least interesting, but Nintendo's offerings seemed sparse to me.
It is a bunch of little things (low on-board memory, controller costs, online subscription and how they are handling it, some of the games seeming overpriced for what they are) that add up that give me the feeling they are kind of messing this thing up.
I realize I may sound overly negative, but it is mostly because my hopes were so high after the initial showing.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
The little things I agree with. While it's debatable whether the Vita would have been successful otherwise, I think the expensive memory cards were one of the biggest reasons it didn't take off and am worried the same will happen with the expensive controllers and online subscription. Low memory I'm less worried about because SD cards are pretty cheap now and are only going to get lower, but wish they would have put in 128-256 GB (not sure if any more would be realistic). Also do not like the 128 GB data cap at all. Hope that gets changed as SD cards get bigger. Online sub has me uneasy too. If it's under $30, I can understand it, but if they charge more I feel they may shoot themselves in the foot.
Overpriced games I'm less worried on. Arms and 12 Switch might end not being worth $60, but every console launches with overpriced games, then things settle down, and things run their course.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
It will be interesting to see if Pokemon ends up as a big a driver for this thing as it would be on a more traditional handheld. That was something they obviously couldn't show yet as it would be too soon to announce after the release of the other ones. You mentioned the 3DS. Was its pickup in sales because of software or the drastic price cut it had or a little of both? I honestly don't remember how that went now.
Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
The price drop helped, but Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 were what really drove up sales.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
That's good then. This will also have a killer launch game too. I think you were right earlier when you said you think of it more like a 3DS successor. I think I'm much more optimistic about it when I think of it more as a handheld.
Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Rewatching some videos:
-1 2 Switch really should have been a pack-in game.
-Snipperclips is a pretty fun looking little game that seems like cool game you could play with the pair of Joy Con that come with the system with a friend. And unlike 1 2 Switch, it doesn't seem way overpriced.
-I hope they make a Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing for this system. I loved the 3DS editions of both.
-I liked Odyssey more rewatching the trailer without the shock of them using the word sandbox and seeing the weird real-life style locations. That cooking world looks pretty sweet.
-I hope Splatoon 2 has another single player campaign. I really enjoyed the first. Bigger would be good, but I'll take what I can get. I don't think they have even acknowledged if there is a single player mode.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
If you get one at launch what games you plan to get for it Trip? I'm going Zelda and Bomberman personally. Maybe Rayman if it's $20.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Just Zelda I guess. Maybe when I get it, I will feel like I want something else just for more of a reason to play it, but none of the launch titles look like must-haves to me outside of Zelda. I don't think Rayman is a launch title is it?
I also went with the Gray Switch. I assume you did the same? Surprised the other sku has mismatched Joy Con. I don't like the red color.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
From what I heard Rayman is. I went with gray also. Fine with the colors, but don't like the mismatched look on it. Might get a second set though for MP, really looking forward to getting Bomberman nights back on with my friends

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Man that launch lineup is horrible. If you take Zelda out, that system is dead day 1.

Launch is bad. All the stuff I want to play outside of Zelda is in that "distant future" category.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I'm not worried about the launch lineup that bad, feel a steady stream of games the next few months is a lot more important. Remember, the Vita had the best launch lineup of any system the past ten years and we saw how that turned out.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
The launch line-up would be ok IMO if Zelda wasn't cross-gen. I prefer that over a bunch of meh titles like a lot of launch line-ups. I'm sick of getting quantity over quality in videogames these days. People who don't care about Zelda can just... wait
Of course Zelda could be bad but that would be a BIG surprise.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Have we talked about having to use an app on a separate device for matchmaking/voice chat? They are so out of their element with online stuff. It's ridiculous.
Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
It is absurd. I prefer Skype to talk in games over its own voice chat for a lot of reasons, but it's personal preference and in a system that's all about simplicity and convenience, it's a little absurd that you have to have a smartphone on you for online. I suspect it's a soft barrier to keep younger kids from talking online, but still stupid.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
They added Switch titles on Gamefly today. Hoping I can rent something just to be able to try out something other than Zelda at launch. I threw Bomberman and 1-2 Switch in my queue. Also hoping I can rent Arms whenever that comes.

You play those Switch games, don't worry about Playstation and trophies my closest rival.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I can't see myself ever catching you... haha. I go through periods where I can't seem to stomach trophying. I think the final grind for Uncharted 4 and Mirror's Edge: Catalyst broke me a bit. I had thought for sure I'd go for Gravity Rush 2's and if it was as easy as the first's I probably would, but this seems tougher, so I'm putting it off. Maybe I will come back to it. Bad news for my trophy count, but great news for you!
Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Yeah, I'm kind of the same way anymore. I know Jak has an easy one, but the increased difficulty playing on the Vita just makes me not want to bother. I probably still will, but I won't be happy about it.
I still wish I would have liked that conference more so I would have gotten one. Oh well, I'm sure I will someday once there's a few more games I want.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
So finding out this won't have a physical release for Rime or Yooka-Laylee has me torn. On one hand, I want a disc/cart for both of these games, but I'd also much rather play a Switch version of them. It's like the Vita where I wanted everything it could run on that thing. If they're day one releases I might just go Switch anyways and get a PS4 disc when they're dirt cheap.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
Since I decided to just go ahead and buy Horizon and just sent back my other rentals, my queue is clear for the Switch! I'm hoping to get either 1-2 Switch or Bomberman (or both!). As stupid as 1-2 Switch looks, it would be fun to try as a rental and show some of the other functionality to people. My brother used to play Bomberman a lot as a kid, so I'm hoping I can maybe rope him into some co-op if I get that.
Bummer to hear about the Joy Con connectivity issues today. Hoping they can get that fixed. Still really excited for this thing. Only one more week now.

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion
I'd be all over 1 2 Switch if it was $10 or had a bundle with more Joycons like Wii Play had with the Wiimote. But I still want to rent it just to see what the HD Rumble has to offer.
As for the Joycons, from what I heard they're very aware of it and have a solution that will be ready by launch.
