I haven't finished it yet but from what I've heard, the ending kind of wraps things up but there's still room for more

I guess HBO is adapting Utopia with Fincher as a director and Gillian Flynn (the Gone Girl writer/author) writing. Edit: It sounds like this may be in trouble now, so maybe not!

I started up Homicide Life on the Streets. It is based on David Simon's book. My cousin let me borrow the box set last year and I never got around to it. He is visiting soon, so I'd like to say I got some done! It is actually pretty good. Has a young Andre Braugher in it and he is great. Also John Munch (the character) who I have seen pop up in like sixty shows since.

I've also been watching Ballers because The Rock is in it mostly. It is surprising how dull his character is. Feels like a waste of him being on the show. Honestly the show isn't very good either. My favorite part has been seeing John David Washington's inner Denzel come through in some of his scenes (he is Denzel's son).

A lot of show revivals happening recently. X-Files, Prison Break, Heroes, 24, Arrested Development, Coach and even Full House sort of. Any shows you'd like to see back? And would it be because they need a conclusion or more just because you want more of it?

Post by TheMatt on Mon Aug 10, 2015 11:08 pm

I just finished watching the Wet Hot American Summer series on Netflix. The movie was one of my favorites to watch with friends during college. A lot of our inside jokes were quoting that movie. The series is stuffed with references and call backs to the original. I don't think its as good as the movie, but its fun to see all those 16 year old characters in a prequel even though they've all aged 15 years. And the star power in the cast is pretty insane. Lots of great cameos too.

I wouldn't watch the show unless you've seen the movie though. You wouldn't get a whole lot out of it.

Post by TripOpt55 on Tue Aug 11, 2015 3:56 pm

I enjoyed First Day of Camp as well though I'd agree it wasn't quite as good as the movie. It felt like the timing was really off in the first couple episodes compared to the movie, but it had really fallen into a rhythm by the end of the season. This kind of humor always has some gags that fall flat and that was definitely the case here at times, but at others it had me laughing so hard. I loved how they came up with all of these ridiculous completely unnecessary origin stories.

Some random gags I really loved from it:

WHAS:FDoC Spoilers:
-Lindsay sneakily pulling out a typewriter under the picnic table and then loudly typing on it.
-Gene's goatee just appearing on him after he changed.
-Gene chasing Victor.
-Josh Charles' character constantly looking over with binoculars and like six popped collars.
-The lawyers making a ridiculous hand wall.
-The two guys shaking aftershave on their junk.
-"I trusted you with my diaphragm."
-The Gene/Falcon fight (Hamm in general was great).
-Pretty much every scene from the big camp vs. camp brawl until the end in the finale.

The funniest joke was probably Abby going into the stall to have a period and then walking out as the actress from the movie. Amazing!

I'm re-watching The Sopranos. If I make a thread for this should I do a list of questions thing for people who have seen it? I know you just started a while ago Trip but apart from Twolf and Bret I don't remember who's finished it

I never got too far in and then got sidetracked. So I'd say just make the thread for the people who have seen it like you suggested with questions. Even with just three of you, I'm sure it would be a fun discussion.

Yeah that makes sense. I kind of thought of you (and perhaps Twolf too) as fans of HBO dramas in general, so thought you might check it out. I watched the first two episodes of it and found it really dull. So I don't think you are missing much.

Watched the Hannibal finale. It was pretty good. I didn't love this show as much as most, but it was really unique and I appreciated that. Season 3 wasn't as good as the first two. I kind of think that may have been because it was more adpated material whereas the first two were more original. Having said that I would have liked to have seen Fuller's take on Slience of the Lambs (which I guess they didn't have the rights to) and the original ending he had intended to bring to the whole thing. That probably won't come now though. Oh well. It was a fun ride anyway.

Started checking out Bojack Horseman. It's about a world where anthropomorphic animals (half man, half animal) live among humans and Will Arnett plays a horse one who used to be a star of a 90's sitcom. He's cast perfectly in the role, giving the a great mix of pathetic and cynical. It's not Rick and Morty good, but it's really funny with a gag about his agent dating three kids in a trenchcoat who only Bojack can tell isn't an adult being especially hilarious.

Mr. Robot finished up its first season last night. Amazing hacker drama with one of the most fascinating lead characters on TV. Probably my favorite show of 2015 so far. Some shows I love like a Jane the Virgin or Rectify, I realize not everyone would like, but I'd advise Mr. Robot to anyone. It feels like it has the sort of wide appeal of something like Breaking Bad. Where it has that feeling of a prestige drama with superb acting and great cinematography, but also it is a lot of fun and really thrilling to watch at times, so it feels like would appeal to most anyone. It is also, like a Game of Thrones or Lost, really fun to talk about each week which is a nice bonus.

I checked out The Muppets. Good starting point, but wasn't great. Like the premise is basically 30 Rock with Muppets. Tons of potential there and Ms Piggy is a perfect choice as their version of Tracey/Jenna

I hadn't really thought about the 30 Rock comparison until you and others online mentioned it (not sure how I didn't to be honest). If it turns out half as funny as that show I'd be thrilled, but the setup is definitely similar. I don't have a particular affection for The Muppets. I know most of the characters, but am not a huge fan (not that I dislike them either, just never really into them or anything I guess). I thought it was alright though. My favorite part was Statler and Waldorf. Those guys are the best. Elizabeth Banks was good in it too. I think this episode was kind of cobbled together though from the initial pitch (which was only 11 minutes) with some extra scenes added in. I hear Ep 2 is much better and I expect it will feel more cohesive.

Definitely agree on Statler and Waldorf, those two are hilarious. I'd watch a whole show that was nothing but them commenting on random things.

General TV Show Discussion - Page 17 Empty Re: General TV Show Discussion

Post by volvocrusher on Mon Sep 28, 2015 2:28 am

Haven't watched a full Fox Sunday in a while so thought I'd give a rundown:

Bob's Burgers- Best of the lineup. Did an anthology where each kid tells how their parents would meet if Bob didn't have a mustache. Gene's especially is incredible. Check it out On Demand, you won't regret it.

The Simpsons: Gonna spoil (not like you guys will care I'm almost certain), but Homer and Marge separate where Homer dates a younger girl and Marge dates her father only to reveal that was Homer's dream before they separated only to reveal that was Homer's dream before he dated the girl only to reveal that was Marge's dream and they stay together. So yeah, bleh ratings trap with a few good one liners

Brooklyn Nine-Nine- Holt and Gina together in this new job are going to be incredible. Both hit it out of the park. Rosa was hilarious too. Never been that sold on Jake and Amy together, but it gave great Boyle lines so I can tolerate it if that continues. Like where the story will be going.

Family Guy- You know, this show wouldn't be half bad bad if they didn't try so hard to be cram as much shock humor and preaching as possible. But between Brian giving a speech on prescription drugs followed by him being a hypocrite on it and jokes about suicide, graphically putting knives in Joe's legs, and gross out humor, this was downright unpleasant despite a few funny gags.

Last Man on Earth- Doing a good job of recovering from the rut they were in for a while. Like how they dealt with the fallout from season 1 and the ball gags (not what you think) are as funny as they've always been. If this and Bob's Burgers are any indication, putting Kristen Schaal in anything is a good way to make it great. Excited for next week's more than any other show here.

I really liked both B99 and Last Man on Earth last night. I have to say while I like Kristen Schaal in LMoE, she played my least favorite character on 30 Rock. Oddly enough my other least favorite character on 30 Rock was Will Forte's. I like him in most things though. Anyway, this episode got back to what I liked about the early part of last season. Great stuff.

Checked out Gravity Falls. It's about two kids who espend the summer with their great uncle (aka gruncle) who cons people into thinking his house is home to weird supernatural wonders when the kids are trying to find the secret behind actual supernatural activity. Kind of like Twin Peaks meets Spongebob, but has its own flavor.

All around great show. Tons of great dialog, fun characters and clever plot. The mystery was more minor than I expected in 1 but had a good payoff. Only issue is the only easy way to get all the episodes in order is to buy them off Amazon or iTunes. But I felt it was worth the $25 I spent.

The new shows this Fall have been pretty meh. I think The Grinder has been rather funny so far. I think it is Rob Lowe's delivery plus Fred Savage's reaction to how everyone else reacts to Lowe's character that crack me up the most. They do a pretty good job at poking fun at law shows (and even sitcoms) too.

Anyone watch the new Fargo premiere? Pretty good, but didn't hook me in the way the first season's premiere did. They have a nice ensemble cast here, but no character that was quite as initially entertaining as Billy Bob's Malvo. I like how it is somewhat connected to the first season too. A neat touch.

Yeah, I felt like they tried to introduce a whole bunch of characters and subplots at once, but no core. Season one had two clear leads and a much simpler plot setup. I loved what they did with the very first scene, though. It really caught me off guard. Reminded me of Tarantino. I'm excited to see how the threads all start coming together.

Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons stood out the most to me in the premiere. They seem like great fits for the show's universe
