Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Well, SOMEONE had to do it!
What do you guys think so far? I only started it tonight. I'm liking it, though I'm waiting for the game to open a bit, and I'm not sure if it's necessary to have credits in every chapter but...yeah. Good stuff. Snake's very quiet (Kiefer's fees are probably very steep haha). But I think Troy Baker's alright as Ocelot despite people's complaints. I feel he inhabits the MGS1 ocelot more in some scenes than others though.
But yeah, keep the discussion as spoiler free as possible for now until we all finish. And maybe put chapter numbers above spoiler tags so we know what's up?
I may...or may not take a sick day on Friday to get a four day weekend and play this >_>

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
It's not Troy Baker's best work (that'll always be Joel and Kanji) but he's ok. Snake reminds me of Tom Hardy in Fury Road in this game.
The prologue kind of threw me off with the whole character creation thing and Quiet and the other snake. I haven't really followed the news about this very closely. I'm only at chapter 5 right now I think but I'm really enjoying the gameplay. It made me not want to play Rocket League, which is impressive. It feels like kind of like Far Cry 3 without any of the things I didn't like in that game

I'm enjoying it a lot so far, just wish I had more time to play it. Story seems to be on the back burner after the intro, hope that changes with big events. Gameplay is incredible but I still want that MGS weirdness

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
anyone who wants more story once you unlock the med platform and complete Side Op 51 find a door with a blue light go inside and then inside another door.
Theres a huge wtf moment if you played Ground Zeroes and it also unlocks a major sidequest it seems
in any case im loving this game. its like the best parts of PW and MGS4 together with none of the bad parts. Story bits seem far between but considering the scale of this game its not surprising still whats there is good.

The cynic in me says Snake's performance in this is that way because Keifer's daily rate is a little expensive as opposed to David Hayter's. I miss David...;_;

I would have been fine with Kiefer as old man Snake as 4 cause just saying a mix of old age and smoking doing that to his voice would have been a fine excuse but here he still looks too much like 3/PW Big Boss. It's throwing me off

I think David Hayter's old man smoking voice was better than Kiefer's would've been though. I say this as someone who think's Kiefer's voice work is better than David's was

Does anyone know how to create multiple loadouts for supply drops? Do I have to unlock it? It doesn't seem like something I'd have to unlock

Does anybody else feel like the story missions are the worst part of this game? Every time I do one I seem to be annoyed by one thing or another.

Yes. Â And the lack of story is annoying as well. Actually the story missions just seem like longer side missions.

Depends on the story missions. Some feel like they should have been broken up into 2 or 3, others do good stuff with longer missions. Just wish there were more boss fights.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
I never thought I'd say this about a Metal Gear Solid game but I really wish there were more plot.
I'll make this blanket statement: Metal Gear Solid V is a fantastic game, but not a very good Metal Gear Solid game.
The gameplay is really well defined, the emergent style of game design works wonderfully when you can imagine different scenarios of how to deal with a problem without the game telling you. The AI (mostly) reacts to things naturally (hearing gunshots but not seeing you, knowing something's been destroyed vs. turned off, looking at a horse but not necessarily suspecting anything about it when it passes etc). So yeah, fantastic GAME. Kojima listened to my complaints about MGS4 and maybe took them a little too seriously...
But the mainstays I consider as part of a Metal Gear Solid Game are scaled down or almost gone:
1. Boss fights - minus a few notable encounters the boss fights are gone. The ones that are here are not nearly as clever or organic as previous ones. (I.e. I knew what i needed to do about the flame dude but still had to look up how to beat him since the ways of doing it didn't always work).
2 Crazy cast of villains - kind of goes back into the previous point but where's my Foxhound, my Boss' squad (whatever they're called), my dead cell? It's part of what makes an MGS game feel like an MGS game.
3. A rapidly escalating plot...it doesn't even ESCALATE it just...plods. I mean that opening sequence was so amazing and well crafted and then...it never really happens again. Yet, anyway.
There are lots of things from previous MGS games I don't miss (telling a grizzled war veteran what nuclear deterrence is over and over etc), but a little bit of it is kind of what makes and MGS game an MGS game.
So yeah, great game, going to keep playing it, enjoy it, but it's kind of a weak MGS game because of the plot. You never know if a story mission is going to be a more detailed side op or an actual STORY mission until you play it most times. The fact that I've played for about 30 hours and feel like there barely IS a plot. Plot summary so far:
CYPHER BAD...us...good? ... ...LANGUAGE! ... ... ...PEQUOT ARRIVED AT LZ!

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Yeah those are pretty much my exact thoughts. Excellent stealth game, disappointing Metal Gear. I'm having a tough time comparing it to the rest of the series because it doesn't really feel like it belongs, but I'm definitely having more fun with it

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
I'll rank them, and I'll probably get scolded.
1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Metal Gear Solid 3
3. Metal Gear Solid 4
4. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
5. Metal Gear Solid 2
6. Metal Gear So'id 5
Krubix nails what my heart feels. Gameplay 5 is the best, but that's not what makes a Metal Gear game special for me. There's a reason why the first one is still my favorite.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Can't say for sure but so far I'd sayÂ
1. 3
2/3. 5/1
4. PW
5. 2
6. 4
It definitely is the least MGSy one in the series, but damn the gameplay is so good I have a hard time complaining. I put 5 and 1 at a tie because they're the extremes on each side, 1 has the best weirdness, pacing, and tightest plot even though I prefer the emotional core of 3's ploy while 5 has the best gameplay. 3 is a grear midle ground, good if a little awkward gameplay whole still getting all the little things MGS needs right. Used to put 4 over 2 but 5's is so good it makes me realize how wasted potential most the acts of 4 were.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
4's the easiest one to rank for me. At the bottom. Great mechanics but so much of that game feels like a waste and it doesn't come close to being as interesting as 2, so the story can't save it. Multiplayer was pretty fun at times though despite the rampant lagswitching and infuriating online "service." I keep forgetting that The Phantom Pain is getting an online mode as well

I don't know if I agree with MGS4 being so low when it comes to a game. I thought that game had some silky smooth controls and awesome gameplay, unless you put it so low because of the overload of cut scenes. Then I can understand.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
No I put it low because I legitimately think the gameplay isn't that good. Controls are great, but Acts 3 and 5 are atrocious and Act 4 is only good because of nostalgia. That means less than half of the game lets it's gameplay live up to its potential

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
I too thought MGS4 was one of the weakest, it had a bunch of gameplay elements that couldn't really be used, and felt a bit awkward and then you only got to control Snake for about 5 seconds until the next cutscene. I mean...Act 2 was good (that was the one in the foresty area right?) because it shut up and let you sneak that shit, but Act 3 was meh, Act 4 was only good for Nostalgia but plagued with bullshit robots instead of actual enemies that are interesting to sneak around and Act 5 had you on a ship where it hard to sneak using the techniques the rest of the game had taught you to master (and the story went bananas and became utter garbage).

After many attempts I realized I am just not a Metal Gear guy. But perhaps this new less Metal Gear-ish game might be up my alley.

Also the way the narrative is broken up has led me into a WILD conspiracy theory about the game's development.
The story is still kind of shit.
We shall see...CHAPTER TWO, BITCHES!

There's different chapters? I prefer the dog. Quiet sometimes doesn't even follow me into missions. Anyone know how to remedy this? And you're right sir, this story sure is shit. So much so that I don't play it too much, and I often play the newest version of FIFA that I hate quite a lot more than it. It'll still probably be my GOTY, but I'm not happy about picking it.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
I think the story's pretty forgettable for the most part, but I LOVE Skullface's motivation. Is the way he carries it out stupid? Absolutely. But it's stupid in a very Metal Geary way. I just wish the rest of the story was up to snuff because I get the feeling something much more epic was originally planned
