Voice Acting in Games Empty Voice Acting in Games

Post by TripOpt55 Sat Oct 15, 2016 9:50 pm

Not sure we have ever honed in on voice acting on here before. Maybe we have. Anyway, here are a few voice acting questions.

-Who is your favorite voice actor?

-Do you have a particular favorite voice acting performance (doesn't have to be from your favorite VA)?

-What game do you think has the overall best voice-acting?

I was going to make this a top five for voice actors, but decided to try a more general thread out. Feel free to list more than one per question.

Also if anyone has any more questions about voice acting, feel free to pose them. We could always add some worsts if we are feeling mean.

1. It's horribly cliche but...probably Troy Baker. When he's used and directed well he is fantastic despite having that "BUT HE'S IN EVERYTHING..." reputation. Jennifer Hale is also pretty consistently good.

2. Troy Baker as Joel from The Last of Us was fantastic. Really surprised me. I also really liked Glados as well obviously...great character. Hmmm...lots of good actors, hard to pick just one performance.

3. Hard to say - from a historical perspective - for a dub Metal Gear Solid has great voice acting. I feel like every character really went for it and made it unique. From a grounds up operation the one that immediately pops to mind is The Last of Us. The voice acting is both subtle and superb. Portal is another series that is in large part made by its fantastic voice performances as well.

-Who is your favorite voice actor?

Keith David. He usually plays pretty minor roles, but somehow always ends up stealing the show. Just has one of those voices.

-Do you have a particular favorite voice acting performance (doesn't have to be from your favorite VA)?

Mark Hamill as The Joker in the Arkham games. Kind of cheating, but god damn that guy loses himself in the role.

-What game do you think has the overall best voice-acting?

Probably Mass Effect 2. Every character has a bit moment where the VA can really show off their acting with Mordin, Tali, Jack, and Thane getting especially great moments.

Hamill is fantastic - I was trying to think "video game exclusive" but I suppose that's not fair.

Do you mean the actor or role? Because pretty much every VA does TV and animated movies as well as games.

I always remembered The Joker from The Batman Animated series so the video game seemed more of an extension of that...if that logic makes sense.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Why I feel it's kind of cheating, but god damn that's the best voice acting I've seen period.

-Who is your favorite voice actor?

John Truitt, who was the voice of Ghaleon in Working Designs' localizations of Lunar and Lunar 2. He also did voices in some of their other games. You could hear the sneer in his voice every time, and it was great.

Other than him, I like Troy Baker (with my taste in gaming, more for games like Tales of Vesperia and Persona 4), Kari Wahlgren (a lot of RPG roles including Ashe in FFXII) , and John DiMaggio (Wakka, Kimahri, Marcus Fenix, and a lot of other roles, but better known as the voice of Bender and Jake the Dog)

-Do you have a particular favorite voice acting performance (doesn't have to be from your favorite VA)? Yangus from Dragon Quest VIII. (VA: Ricky Grover)

Honorable mentions: Cam Clarke as Kratos in Tales of Symphonia (his best known roles: Liquid Snake and Leonardo from the 1980s TMNT cartoon). Three Dog in Fallout 3 (Eric Dellums). Bethesda's voice acting is otherwise complete ass.

-What game do you think has the overall best voice-acting?Dragon Quest VIII

Also if anyone has any more questions about voice acting, feel free to pose them. We could always add some worsts if we are feeling mean.

Setting aside 1980s arcade games and games whose voice-overs were primarily provided by office staff, I'd nominate Matthew Perry as Benny in Fallout: New Vegas. You could tell he was like, "Okay, I've read my lines, give me my check and get me the hell out of here."

I really love Laura Bailey's voice. And she is a good actress too of course. She is probably my favorite.

I'd probably go with Joel from The Last of Us for performance and either TLOU or Uncharted 4 for the best overall.

I'm always impressed when a voice acting performance surprises me in regards to who it is. Like when everyone was hiring Nolan North to be Nathan Drake in every game and then he was that robot in A Crack in Time. That was really cool.

I have to agree with Troy Baker in The Last of Us. Naughty Dog gave him the chance to really go for it and he took it.

For the game with the best voice acting, I have to go with Persona 4. It's so perfectly cast and all of the VAs I recognize in it did some career-best work imo.

Voice Acting in Games Empty Re: Voice Acting in Games

I can't really think of answers for all of the questions, so I'm just going to list some games that I really enjoyed.

Metal Gear Solid - Probably my all time favorite for voice acting. It was the first game it felt like it was done right, and almost 20 years later I still don't skip those codec calls. They're all really great, but I feel as if the first game has the most interesting dialogue. "MERYL!!!! DAMN."

Dragon Quest VIII - You'd be right mad guv' not to include this if you've played it. Cor blimey, you're not right mad are ya, guv'?

Ni no Kuni - The whole cast nailed it and I loved every scene from that game. Oliver and Mr. Drippy worked so well together.

Uncharted - Probably the best overall for voice acting. I played through the first 3 and Golden Abyss so many times, and it just felt like I was playing a movie the voice acting was so great.

Ratchet and Clank - The heroes are great, and nothing beats Nefarious. Not even LAWRENCE!!!!!

The Last of Us
Grand Theft Auto - Vice City
Sly Cooper
Killzone 2 and 3

As far as favorite voice actors, I'll say David Hayter. The one game he didn't voice is the Metal Gear Solid game I enjoyed the least, so that really has to say something about how interesting his performance made those games.

To be honest, the only thing I prefer about Hayter's portrayal of Snake is that I think it works better with how silly those games are. MGSV doesn't have so many silly moments and I think Keifer Sutherland is better for that

I hate the voice acting of Ni No Kuni...just throwing that out there.

Actually, hate's a strong word - most dubbing (in any language, ya weaboo-shoutin' bastards) is awkward and stilted. MGS was a weird exception to the rule and Dragon Quest VIII didn't even have Japanese voices did it?

ANYWAY, point is...I dislike dubs. Dubs are bad. *sips tea...PINKY UP*
