Time to vote for our favorite games and stuff from 2015! Everything except the one that says otherwise has to be games that released in 2015. If you want to make a list or pick a few runners up for any of the categories that is fine, but make sure to have a winner in each. You don't have to do a top ten for GotY, but I numbered it for easier copy and pasting for those that do.

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:

2015 Gaming Awards Empty Re: 2015 Gaming Awards

Post by ajapam Thu Dec 31, 2015 5:18 pm

Game of the Year:
Undertale.
Possibly the best indie game I've ever played. Easily the most complete feeling one. Relatively short, but very sweet with charming characters, a great story, a gigantic bag of tricks and easter eggs, and the most clever use of NG+ I've seen so far.

Runner Up:
Rocket League.
If I didn't come home for Christmas, I'd have 200 hours sunk into this already. It's my new favorite online MP game. There's always room to improve and you've never seen everything. Plus, Psyonix has supported it well with free patches and some cosmetic DLC. Most of the new games I played this year are indie games, but apart from Bloodborne I can't imagine any AAA games taking over this spot.

Honorable Mention:
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
A brilliant little stealth playground. I don't mind the repetitive side missions, but the uninspired story missions and disappointing story leave a bit of a sour taste. Still, the mechanics are top notch.

Downloadable GotY: Undertale
Handheld GotY: Downwell
Worst GotY: Star Wars: Battlefront. Winner of the Ni No Kuni award for "Game I wouldn't even remember if it didn't look so nice." Not to mention some of the dumber unlocks and questionable amount of content
Best Remake: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

Best Singleplayer: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Best Cooperative Multiplayer:
Best Competitive Multiplayer: Rocket League
Best Overall Multiplayer: Rocket League

Best New Character: Papyrus (Undertale.) "This shirt originally didn't say 'cool' on it, but I improved it. Hint: All clothing can be improved this way"
Worst New Character: Quiet (MGSV.) A silly, dumb character designed just to be sexy, who can't even manage that
Best Writing: Undertale
Best Story: The Beginner's Guide

Best Voice Acting: Davey Wreden (The Beginner's Guide.) More of a "I didn't play that many games" choice, but he gets the job done well and keeps the narration from getting overly serious.
Best Soundtrack: Undertale. Simple, but effective. (Runner Up: Xenoblade Chronicles X. Awful, awful town theme, but the rest is great)
Best Sound Design: Star Wars Battlefront.

Best Graphics-Technical: Star Wars Battlefront
Best Graphics-Artistic: Star Wars Battlefront
Best Overall Graphics: Star Wars Battlefront. I have to give it credit, it is absolutely beautiful. Runs really well, too. And mods on PC make it look even more incredible.

Biggest Surprise: Undertale and Rocket League. Two games I never even heard of until after they came out, and they're easily my favorites this year.
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): Star Wars Battlefront and MGSV's lack of story
Best Non-2015 Game You Played For the First Time This Year: Legend of Grimrock
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2015: Bloodborne. Also wish I put more time into Xenoblade X

Favorite Level: The Tower (The Beginner's Guide.) There's a lot of neat, abstract level designs in this game, but this one, combined with the story, is simply chilling. It's visually stunning in a way I've never seen in a game.
Favorite Moment: Papyrus' "blue attack" in Undertale.
Worst Moment: The cutscene in MGSV where Miller gives Snake a cassette tape of what should've been shown in the cutscene.
Best Boss Fight: Neutral ending final boss in Undertale.
Game You Played the Most: Rocket League

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2015: Wii-U (PC feels like cheating)
Most Overrated Game: Star Wars Battlefront
Most Underrated Game: The Beginner's Guide
Best New IP: Rocket League
Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year: MGSV
Any other thoughts on 2015 in gaming:
Still disappointed in the lack of exclusives for current consoles, but this year seems to have been a good set-up for the next, especially for the Ps4

In regards to your worst moment, you mean almost EVERY cutscene in MGSV?!?!?! I think you can see where some of my awards are going already.

Nah, just the one where it actually show him giving you the tape and he tells you to listen to it. Unless it does that more after where I am in the game

2015 Gaming Awards Empty Re: 2015 Gaming Awards

Post by TheMatt Fri Jan 01, 2016 12:15 pm

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
1. Ori and the Blind Forrest
2. Rocket League
3. Tales from the Borderlands
4. Life is Strange
5. Until Dawn
6. Metal Gear Solid V
7. Batman Arkham Knight
8. The Witcher III
9. Guitar Hero Live
10. Massive Chalice

Honorable Mentions:
Fallout 4 - enjoyed what I've played so far, but just didn't have enough time to put it on my list.
Star Wars Battlefront - I know it has a gross DLC structure and there isn't a whole hell of a lot of content, but I've had a ton of fun with it!

Downloadable GotY:Ori and the Blind Forrest

Handheld GotY: Super Meat Boy for the Vita - not really a 2015 game, but having it on Vita is amazing!

Worst GotY: Game of Thrones - The least gamey Telltale game of them all and the characters and story weren't anything special either.

Best Remake:Uncharted Collection - Only played a bit of it, but it sure looks pretty and runs smooth!

Best Singleplayer: Ori and the Blind Forrest
Best Cooperative Multiplayer: Rocket League - 2v2 with a friend is a blast!
Best Competitive Multiplayer: Rocket League - even fun with randoms!
Best Overall Multiplayer: Rocket League - see the trend here?

Best New Character:Rhys from Tales from the Borderlands - I am not the hugest fan of Borderlands humor, but something about his character and the game in general really clicked with me.
Worst New Character:Emily in Until Dawn - but in the best way possible
Best Writing: Tales from the Borderlands - I usually don't laugh at games too often, especially Borderlands stuff... but it was nice to play one of these games that didn't have a doom and gloom setting. The whole game is packed with really fun and colorful characters. And the writers did a really great job making me care about them.
Best Story: Until Dawn - just a really fun teen slasher film made into a game.

Best Voice Acting: Tales from the Borderlands - one of the better voice acting casts I've heard in a video game.
Best Soundtrack: Ori and the Blind Forrest - just beautiful music
Best Sound Design: Until Dawn - jump scares galore!

Best Graphics-Technical: The Witcher III - Wish I had a PC powerful enough to play it, but I thought it still looked damn good on PS4
Best Graphics-Artistic: Ori and the Blind Forrest
Best Overall Graphics: Ori and the Blind Forrest

Biggest Surprise: Tales from the Borderlands - The only game of this style that I wanted to immediately play through again after I was finished.

Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): Mortal Kombat X - I absolutely adored MK9... and MKX was one of my most anticipated games of 2015, but man... this game was a bummer for me. The net code just didn't work so I was never able to play with friends online. Also the story mode wasn't nearly as strong as MK9. Just disappointing across the board.

Best Non-2015 Game You Played For the First Time This Year: Forza Horizon 2. But seriously... when are we getting Burnout Paradise 2?

Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2015: Super Mario Maker - Actually just came in the mail yesterday but only installed it before I had to leave. Looking forward to spending some time with it in 2016.

Favorite Level:The part in Ori where
Spoiler:
. Some of the most fun and demanding platforming I've ever experienced.

Favorite Moment: The big twist in episode 5 of Tales from the Borderlands. Definitely did not see that coming!

Worst Moment: I really didn't like the ending of Life is Strange. I watched the other ending on YouTube and I didn't care for either of them.

Best Boss Fight: Final Boss from Tales of the Borderlands. Yes there is actually a boss fight in that game. And its hilarious.

Game You Played the Most: Rocket League

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2015: Honestly, its probably PC. Not that I played anything on PC this year, but it has both Rocket League and Ori... along with all the other multi platform games. So yeah... PC.

Most Overrated Game: Fallout 4 - I enjoy it, but they really didn't make that big of a leap from Fallout 3. I remember really being blown away by 3, and 4 hasn't really clicked with me yet.

Most Underrated Game: Massive Chalice - Really fun little XCOM style game. It was free on Xbox Games with Gold and I didn't really hear anyone talking about it. I had really enjoyed it though!

Best New IP: Until Dawn - I have heard they are working on a sequel and this is an IP that I would LOVE to see more from. Also really dug that they made it a full game, instead of making it episodic.

Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year: I don't get much time to discuss on the forum these days... but I remember being extremely excited when Trip finally got to play Ori.

Any other thoughts on 2015 in gaming: Too many games, not enough time to play them!

Funny, Until Dawn is pretty low down for me. You're certainly not the only one to really like that game, but I found it so disappointing. Looked great, though.

Post by TheMatt Fri Jan 01, 2016 11:37 pm

I actually didn't care for the way it ended. I thought it was kind of abrupt... but that could be due to the choices I made and how I played the game. But I had to put it high on my list, because very few games had me hooked like that game did. I remember rushing home from work every day for a week so I could play more. Games rarely do that for me these days.

Post by TripOpt55 Fri Jan 01, 2016 11:54 pm

Until Dawn was better than I expected it to be, but it isn't an experience that stuck with me. I mostly loved the atmosphere and visuals and the general slasher movie vibe. I also liked how tense things were and how nervous I was for the characters, but reading about some things after beating the game made me think less of that aspect. I am glad I played it though. I would definitely play another one/spiritual sequel too. It was a fun rental.

4. Batman: Arkham Knight
5. Grow Home
6. Xenoblade Chronicles X (In progress)
7. Super Mario Maker
8. Ori and the Blind Forest
9. Fallout 4
10. Splatoon

Honorable Mentions: Life is Strange

Downloadable GotY: Grow Home
Handheld GotY: Lara Croft Go
Worst GotY: I feel like there is something worse I played than Halo 5, but fuck Halo 5
Best Remake: Rare Replay

Best Singleplayer: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Best Cooperative Multiplayer: Bloodborne
Best Competitive Multiplayer: Splatoon
Best Overall Multiplayer: Splatoon

Best New Character: The robot from Grow Home
Worst New Character: Locke from Halo 5. Or really any new Spartan from Halo 5.
Best Writing: Batman Arkham Knight
Best Story: Batman Arkham Knight

Best Voice Acting: Batman Arkham Knight
Best Soundtrack: Metal Gear Solid V
Best Sound Design: Bloodborne

Best Graphics-Technical: Halo 5 (ugh)
Best Graphics-Artistic: Bloodborne
Best Overall Graphics: Halo 5 (double ugh)

Biggest Surprise: How good Rise of the Tomb Raider was
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): The toughest question on this list between all the microtransactions, ridiculous season passes, and Gamergate. I'm gonna go with Gamergate though because that shit really needs to end
Best Non-2015 Game You Played For the First Time This Year: Grim Fandango
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2015: Undertale. And I own that one!

Favorite Level: One of the first Africa missions in MGSV that has you blow up the pipelines. Really well designed area
Favorite Moment: The final Joker confrontation in Arkham Knight
Worst Moment: Halo 5's cliffhanger
Best Boss Fight: Forget the name of the boss, but the one in Bloodborne that plays out like the Revolver Ocelot fight in MGS1
Game You Played the Most: Pokemon multiplayer

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2015: PC
Most Overrated Game: Another really tough question. Gonna go with Halo 5, but Fallout 4, and The Witcher 3 are really close
Most Underrated Game: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Best New IP: Bloodborne
Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year: MGSV
Any other thoughts on 2015 in gaming: Very blah year. Not awful like last year but not too much which really stood out.

It's funny because it seems every game website (and I know, to an extent they do this every year...) is saying "2015 was the BEST YEAR EVAHR FOR GAMES" and I just don't see why? Given, there are a lot of new games I'm just now playing or haven't played but still.

I always forget that Grow Home was a 2015 game. Not good enough for my list but if I had enough for a good top 10 it'd probably make it.

And yeah there wasn't all that much this year that interested me. Being a PC-centric player didn't help me with that, though. Wasn't terribly excited for the big PC oriented games like The Witcher or Fallout, Bloodborne and Tomb Raider are exclusive, and Arkham Knight was a disaster for the ages on PC

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
1. Super Mario Maker
2. Dragon Quest Heroes
3. Tales of Zestiria
4. Final Fantasy Type-0
5. Fallout 4
6. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
7. Bloodborne
8. Codename: S.T.E.A.M.
10. Monster
Honorable Mentions: Final Fantasy VII, if only because it's a re-release of an older game. You all know how I feel about it otherwise. Also The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter.

Downloadable GotY:Final Fantasy VII
Handheld GotY: Codename: S.T.E.A.M.
Worst GotY: Never know how to answer this one, I avoid the games that are unlikely to gel with me.
Best Remake:

Best Singleplayer:Super Mario Maker
Best Cooperative Multiplayer:Super Mario Maker. Yeah, I know that's kind of stretching things. Smile
Best Competitive Multiplayer:Mortal Kombat X
Best Overall Multiplayer:Super Mario Maker

Best New Character: Piper Wright (Fallout 4).
Worst New Character:
Best Writing: Fallout 4 - relatively speaking.
Best Story: Trails of Cold Steel.

Best Voice Acting: Dragon Quest Heroes
Best Soundtrack: Dragon Quest Heroes
Best Sound Design:Fallout 4

Best Graphics-Technical:Star Wars: Battlefront.
Best Graphics-Artistic:Dragon Quest Heroes. Looks like how I hope Dragon Quest XI will look, unless they use the cel-shaded look DQVIII had.
Best Overall Graphics:Star Wars: Battlefront. Sure is pretty.

Biggest Surprise:Lots of them: Final Fantasy VII HD Remake, Shenmue III, Ni no Kuni 2, Valkyria: Azure Revolution
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related):In some ways, Fallout 4. It was fun, I enjoyed the settlements and all, and I did like the characterization of the PC. Mechanically, in many ways it was a huge step back from New Vegas, making me wish to God they'd have kept Obsidian on as the developers of the Fallout series.
Best Non-2015 Game You Played For the First Time This Year:Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2015:Xenoblade Chronicles X

Favorite Level:"Nintendo Museum", a SMM level created by Cary Woodham, a 1UP/Pixlbit friend of mine. Does that count?
Favorite Moment:Seeing Jessica and Yangus show up in Dragon Quest Heroes.
Worst Moment: Probably watching Konami unceremoniously gut its game division. I guess I saw it coming - video games just don't seem to have the same ROI that Konami's other ventures do - but it hurts, considering that Konami was once right up there with Nintendo, Square, Sega, and Namco on the list of greats. And it doesn't seem like a lot of star developers make it on their own once they leave the publisher where they became famous.
Best Boss Fight: The DragonLord in Dragon Quest Heroes. Brought back fond memories of playing Dragon (Warrior) Quest on the NES back in 1989.
Game You Played the Most: Fallout 4. Yeah, in spite of what I just said.

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2015: PS4
Most Overrated Game: The Witcher 3
Most Underrated Game: Dragon Quest Heroes
Best New IP: Codename: S.T.E.A.M.
Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year:I was a no-show in gaming discussions this year, it's been all across the board and not just here. Sad
Any other thoughts on 2015 in gaming: Honestly, I had a good year in gaming. No, it wasn't as loaded with hits as 2013 or 2008 were, but it was a great step up from 2014. I'm as Japan-centric as ever in my gaming habits and it seems to me like we're getting more good Japanese stuff lately (well, Konami aside, anyway :-/ ) A lot of it, admittedly, is still upcoming, but I'm happier with Square Enix lately than I have been in a long time, especially since they're paying more attention to their Japanese studios, while Nintendo and Namco are as awesome as ever. I'm happy that Sega and SNK seem to be getting over their infatuation with pachislots and refocusing more on video games. The niche publishers I like, like XSEED and NISA, are bringing a lot of under-the-radar releases. I'm looking forward to 2016.

Well there it is. Explaining your choices or discussing others' choices is welcome to help spur more discussion. Have at it!

2015 Gaming Awards Empty Re: 2015 Gaming Awards

Post by TripOpt55 Sun Jan 03, 2016 7:39 pm

Skipped some I wasn’t sure on. I might come back for them.

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
1. Rise of the Tomb Raider
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
3. Yoshi’s Woolly World
4. Ori and the Blind Forest
5. Batman: Arkham Knight
6. Life is Strange
7. Lara Croft Go
8. Splatoon
Going to stop at eight as I just don’t feel too passionate about anything else. Mario Maker is worthy probably, but I didn’t put enough time in. Also after RotTR, I didn’t know how to order these. I could flop around quite a bit in the 2-7 and still be happy. This is where they ended up today.

Downloadable GotY: Ori and the Blind Forest
Handheld GotY: Lara Croft Go
Worst GotY: Game of Thrones: Even the promise of a free platinum hasn’t enticed me to finish this. It honestly feels pretty phoned in.
Best Remake: Tearaway Unfolded: I prefer the Vita version, but I respect the work put into this version and liked a lot of the new content.

Best Singleplayer: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Best Multiplayer: I really didn’t play much multiplayer this year, so can’t say on these. I do have a blast playing WWE 2K16 with friends though locally.

Best New Character: Max Caulfield (Life is Strange)
Best Writing: The Witcher 3
Best Story: The Witcher 3

Best Voice Acting: Life is Strange
Best Soundtrack: Life is Strange
Best Sound Design: Until Dawn

Best Graphics-Technical: Rise of the Tomb Raider
Best Graphics-Artistic: Ori or Yoshi
Best Overall Graphics: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Biggest Surprise: That I liked The Witcher 3 so much.
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): I guess all the delays.
Best Non-2015 Game You Played For the First Time This Year: Sunset Overdrive (Valiant Hearts is close)
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2015: Maybe Tembo the Badass Elephant. Now that I have the three consoles, I don’t feel there was one game I really wanted to play that I missed out on like usual.

Best Boss Fight: Splatoon’s final boss
Game You Played the Most: The Witcher 3

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2015: Xbox One.
Best New IP: Ori or Life is Strange
Any other thoughts on 2015 in gaming: Kind of an eh year in gaming. I liked RotTR better than any game in 2014, but felt like there was better depth in games in 2014 (like I really dug more games that year overall). I kind of like that I ended up trying some things I normally wouldn’t this year. That was cool.
