Now Streaming Heads Up! Empty Re: Now Streaming Heads Up!

Post by avidacridjam Thu Mar 13, 2014 10:10 am

Sorry. I'm up to my eyeballs at work. When I get home, usually all I can do is go right to bed, with little energy for anything else. I'll try to be more productive here since I always check Netflix and Hulu for new streaming arrivals. My queues for both are fucking ridiculous.

Notable titles on Hulu Plus (added recently):

Akira
Get On The Bus
Devil In A Blue Dress (over here, too)
Babe
Babe: Pig In The City
The Adventures of Milo & Otis
Gimmie Shelter

For fans of world cinema, always plenty of great stuff on their Criterion section, such as:
Seven Samurai (my favorite film of all time)
Cronos (Guillermo Del Toro's debut)
Persona

Speaking of Del Toro, search for Welcome To Bleak House on Hulu. It's a feature on the dvd/blu-ray release of Cronos and should still be available. It's not too long although I wish it was. Del Toro is only the owner of the greatest man cave.

Well, I don't use any streaming services atm but we should use this to select Now Watching movies.

Boom, genius idea.

The Grandmaster has recently been added to Netflix Instant. I found this to be a very worthwhile film, both as a martial arts film and as a Wong Kar-Wai film. My review is on the Movies Watched Recently thread.

There's also an excellent doc on the prog rock band Rush called Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage.
The Oscar winner for Best Documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, is also available.

And this isn't movie-related but I saw a Twitter post that the past 8 seasons of 24 will be taken off Netflix Instant after this week.

What's everyone's favorite movie in the above list? Mine is "A League of Their Own". Jimmy Dugan!

Rocky I hands down. Such a classic. Though admittedly I do like Mean Girls quite a bit. Especially this bit

Can't stand League of Their Own though except a few scenes of Tom Hanks being an asshole.

Chinatown. Every time I've revisited it, it fails to lose any of its splendor.

Here's a few more additional titles added to Netflix that's not on that list of pspiddy's:

Ali
Some Like It Hot
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Angel Heart
For A Few Dollars More

And on Hulu Plus:

Dances With Wolves
Out of Sight
The Muppets Take Manhattan
The People Vs. Larry Flynt
All 25 films in the Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman series (will definitely check this one out)

I love Some Like it Hot...

Also, one of my favorite lines ever is from a Zatoichi movie. A prefectural police guy is looking at a dead lady in a lake. He sits there for a while looking at the scene and says "Well, it was either murder, suicide or an accident."

Brilliant detective work if I say so myself.

Recently added to Netflix:

Short Term 12: one of the best films of last year, one I can comfortably say is perfect in every way. It's about a young couple who work as supervisors at a foster care facility and how the woman's grasp on her job and self-control is shaken with the arrival of a new resident, which brings about memories of her own troubled childhood. If you're not in love with Brie Larson, this ought to do the trick.

Milius - John Milius is one of the best screenwriters and directors to have emerged from the 70s. This guy wrote Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, Jeremiah Johnson, Geronimo: An American Legend, Clear And Present Danger; did script polishes on Jaws, The Hunt For Red October and others; directed and wrote The Wind and the Lion, Big Wednesday, Conan The Barbarian, Red Dawn, Dillinger and Rough Riders. He co-created one of my favorite tv series, HBO"s Rome. He's one of the great raconteurs. So why has this man not had as much success as some of his colleagues? Well, because he's an extreme right-winger, he wrestles with the Hollywood studio system at every turn and he fucking loves his guns (well, he made Red Dawn, which didn't go over well PR wise). A fascinating portrait of a man who's still trying to tell stories.

The Dirties - I haven't seen this one but I'm told its excellent. It was an indie from last year that dealt with two high school kids making a film about two picked on teens that get revenge on some bullies and how the film inspires one to seek actual revenge on the bullies that he has to deal with.

The Way Way Back is now on HBO Go for your viewing pleasure. Probably my favorite movie from last year. Co-written and directed by Jim Rash (the Dead from Community) and Nat Faxon.

May 1, 2014 — Movies Arrving On Netflix Instant

A View To A Kill (007 James Bond, one of the shitty ones)
All I Want
Backdraft
Bed Of Roses
Beethoven
Boys Don’t Cry
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (aside from Keanu Reeves' acting, pretty worthwhile)
Candyman
Cursed
Diggstown
Encounters At The End Of The World
Fantastic Voyage
Federal Hill
Fido
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children
For Your Eyes Only (007 James Bond, one of the best)
Forrest Gump
Friday The 13th Part 7 The New Blood
Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster
Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla Vs Mothra
Godzilla King Of The Monsters
Godzilla’s Revenge
Goldfinger (007 James Bond, one of the best)
Heavy Metal (1981) (dated but fun)
Hook
Ichi The Killer (I don't even know if I can stomach this one)
Kill Bill Volume 1
Kill Bill Volume 2
Knucklehead
La Bamba
Live And Let Die (007 James Bond) (one of the OK ones)
Love Is The Devil
Mr Smith Goes To Washington
Never Say Never Again (007 James Bond) (not as good as some think)
Paper Moon
Revenge (I think this is the unrated director's cut; if so, its the better version)
Richard Pryor Live On The Sunset Strip
Rodan
Romancing The Stone (essential 80s film)
School Daze
Single White Female
Sneakers
St. Elmo’s Fire
Starman (essential 80s film, one of Jeff Bridges' best performances)
Terror Of Mechagodzilla
That’s What I Am
The Big Chill (damned good 80s film)
The Big Hit (oh this is just shit. I saw it in the theaters. Pass)
The Buddy Holly Story
The City Of Lost Children (excellent French sci-fi/fantasy)
The Human Stain
The Jewel Of The Nile (disappointing sequel to Romancing The Stone, don't bother)
The Juror
The Legend Of Drunken Master (great early Jackie Chan)
The Living Daylights (007 James Bond) (one of the greats)
The Odessa File (overlooked 60s spy film with Michael Caine; never seen it but want to)
The Prince Of Tides
Top Secret! (kinda corny but fucking bananas; the bar brawl fight in underwater is still amazing)
Tortilla Soup
Winged Migration
You Only Live Twice (007 James Bond) (goofy Connery Bond but still fun)

Lots of Godzilla this month. Hmm, wonder why...
