Post by TripOpt55 Wed Dec 31, 2014 9:40 pm

Hey guys. Time to vote for our favorite games and the like from 2014. Everything except the one that says otherwise has to be games that released in 2014. If you want to make a list or pick a few runners up for any of the categories that is fine, but make sure to have a winner in each. You don't have to do a top ten for GotY, but I numbered it for easier copy and pasting for those that do.

I'll leave voting up for a couple weeks probably in case anyone wants to finish some games before doing their lists. No hurry to vote now. I just wanted it up before the year ended for those who were ready. Explaining your choices or discussing others' choices is welcome to help spur more discussion. Have at it!

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
1. Bayonetta 2
2. Tales of Xillia 2
3. Bravely Default
4. Mario Kart 8
5. Hyrule Warriors
6. Tales of Hearts R
7. Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-
8. Fantasy Life
9. Dragon Age: Inquisition
10. One Piece: Unlimited World Red
Honorable Mentions:Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (only because it's a remake, though), Atelier Escha and Logy, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Strider, One Piece Romance Dawn

Downloadable GotY:Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
Handheld GotY: Bravely Default
Worst GotY: Can't speak firsthand of any really bad games I've played this year. I've avoided most of the big stinkers.
Best Remake:Tales of Symphonia Chronicles

Best Singleplayer:Bayonetta 2
Best Cooperative Multiplayer:Fantasy Life
Best Competitive Multiplayer:Mario Kart 8
Best Overall Multiplayer:Mario Kart 8

Best New Character:Dunno. No new characters really stood out as being iconic.
Worst New Character: Hisui Hearts (Tales of Hearts R). He's not bad, he's just a total asshole and an asshat.
Best Writing: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Best Story:Hyrule Warriors

Best Voice Acting:Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Best Soundtrack:Hyrule Warriors
Best Sound Design: Mario Kart 8

Best Graphics-Technical:Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes
Best Graphics-Artistic:Mario Kart 8
Best Overall Graphics:Mario Kart 8

Biggest Surprise:A toss up between GBA games on Wii U and the PSTV. The latter is a nifty little gaming device even if it's rather flawed (very incomplete support for the Vita's library, though the best Vita games are generally available for it.)
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related):Meh, don't know. I guess the fallout over the exclusivity of Rise of the Tomb Raider for Xbox One and Street Fighter V for PS4 was funny. I might actually be pissed about the latter if I was an Xbox One gamer and pissed about the former if I gave a shit about Tomb Raider, which I really don't.
Best Non-2014 Game You Played For the First Time This Year:Persona 4 Golden
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2014:Super Smash Bros for Wii U. Hopefully for my birthday in two weeks. Also Freedom Wars looks good now that I have a device I can play it on.

Favorite Level:The Magitek Armor level in Bayonetta 2
Favorite Moment:My first Pure Platinum in Bayonetta 2
Worst Moment:Getting gang-banged in Mario Kart 8
Best Boss Fight: Crocodile in One Piece: Unlimited World Red
Game You Played the Most:Bayonetta 2

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2014: Wii U
Most Overrated Game: Destiny
Most Underrated Game: Fantasy Life
Best New IP: Bravely Default (yeah, I know it's basically Final Fantasy under another name, but it's good!)
Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year:Bayonetta 2
Any other thoughts on 2014 in gaming: Nintendo absolutely rocked this year, and Namco and Koei Tecmo were pretty good. Square Enix actually did okay, too. Everybody else kind of sucked. But I still had a good year thanks to the folks I just mentioned. And now that the industry is starting to really shift onto the PS4 and the Xbox One, and with Nintendo still bringing out great stuff, I think things will get a lot better next year. My most anticipated games of next year (assuming they come out) include Zelda Wii U, Final Fantasy XV, FF Type 0, Bloodborne, Tales of Zestiria, Yakuza 5, Persona 5, Project S.T.E.A.M., and Mortal Kombat X.

I actually forgot about Gamergate, it flew so far under my radar. I'll say this, though, that even if I hadn't, Gamergate wouldn't have made my biggest disappointment.

The whole Gamergate thing is living up to the low, low expectations I have of most of the folks involved in that mess rather nicely. Twisted Evil

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
Alien Isolation.
Runner up: Titanfall

I played so few games this year I won't even bother listing the rest. Still waiting for good price drops

Downloadable GotY: Octodad
Handheld GotY: Luftrausers
Worst GotY: I'll just assume this goes to Sonic Boom, though I won't test that theory

Best Singleplayer: Alien Isolation
Best Cooperative Multiplayer: Titanfall
Best Competitive Multiplayer: Nidhogg/Titanfall
Best Overall Multiplayer: Titanfall

Best Writing: Kentucky Route Zero Act 3
Best Story: Kentucky Route Zero Act 3

Best Soundtrack: Alien Isolation/Kentucky Route Zero Act 3 (tie)
Best Sound Design: Alien Isolation

Best Graphics-Technical: Alien Isolation
Best Graphics-Artistic: Alien Isolation
Best Overall Graphics: Alien Isolation. Despite my lack of choices, this was still a great looking game on all levels and it'd have a good chance of winning even if I had played everything

Biggest Surprise: Alien Isolation. I expected it to be a just a good licensed game but it turned out to be really unique and uncompromising
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): well, I complained a lot about remakes, but if I could take a few more and have less pro and anti gamergaters I would do it.
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2014: Wolfenstein, Dark Souls 2, everything by Nintendo

Favourite Level: The escape pod (Alien Isolation)
Favorite Moment: The Lower Depths (Kentucky Route Zero Act 3)
Worst Moment: Near the end of Alien Isolation you have to go back and forth through this one small section multiple times. Fuck that

Game You Played the Most: Alien Isolation, because it's so damn long

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2014: probably the Wii-U
Most Overrated Game: Smash Bros
Most Underrated Game: Alien Isolation
Best New IP: Titanfall
Any other thoughts on 2014 in gaming: I'm glad I went with a gaming PC over a console, though I would love to have a Wii-U

Most Overrated Game:
Most Underrated Game: TxK
Best New IP: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

List your Top 10 Games of the Year:
1. Shovel Knight
2. South Park: The Stick of Truth
3. Child of Light
4. Transistor
5. Bravely Default

Honorable Mentions: I mostly played games from previous years since I'm PS4/Wii U-less so plenty of those.

Downloadable GotY: Shovel Knight
Handheld GotY: Shovel Knight
Worst GotY: The second half of Bravely Default
Best Remake:

Best Singleplayer: Shovel Knight

Best New Character: Edea (Bravely Default)
Worst New Character: Nothing sticks out
Best Writing: South Park: The Stick of Truth
Best Story: South Park: The Stick of Truth

Best Voice Acting: South Park: The Stick of Truth
Best Soundtrack: Child of Light
Best Sound Design: I haven't finished it but Alien Isolation has been very impressive so far.

Best Graphics-Technical: Of the stuff I finished, nothing was particularly amazing.
Best Graphics-Artistic: South Park: The Stick of Truth / Child of Light
Best Overall Graphics: Child of Light

Biggest Surprise: Shovel Knight
Biggest Disappointment (could be a game or just something gaming-related): Agree with Gamergate. Just shows the worst parts of the industry in one nice package on both sides. And it brought all of those negative aspects to the media in a big way.
Best Non-2014 Game You Played For the First Time This Year: Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Game You Wish You Played That Came Out in 2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Favorite Level: The underpants gnome level - South Park
Favorite Moment: Many many things in South Park. Putting in your name and just being referred to as "Douchebag", the abortion clinic
Worst Moment: The slow, horrible realization that I was going to have to repeat the same shit in Bravely default for 40 more hours to beat the game.
Best Boss Fight: Pretty much all of the fights from Shovel Knight. Well designed, old school, but fun and challenging.
Game You Played the Most: Bravely Default...but not by choice. *shakes fist*

Platform/system with the Best Software Lineup in 2014: For me, the PC.
Most Overrated Game: Transistor. People loved it, I loved Bastion but...beat it in 5 hours or something stupid. The story was pretentious. Great ideas not fleshed out nearly enough.
Most Underrated Game: Child of Light
Best New IP: Shovel Knight
Favorite Game to Discuss on the Forum This Year: I suck and have been behind the times on everything so I just cry myself to sleep and eat schocolate.
Any other thoughts on 2014 in gaming: Seems like a good year, I just missed a lot of it! Oh welly!

Downloadable GotY: Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
