TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows Empty Re: TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows

1. The Simpsons- Duh
2. The Spectacular Spider-Man- Does for Spidey what Batman: TAS did for Bats. If it was finished I'd even put this as hands down the definitive version of the superhero.
3. Avatar: The Last Airbender- Having just rewatched it, I'm a little biased since it's so fresh, but damn this show was so much fun. Fantastic characters, great twists, one of the best worlds ever, a good sense of humor, and was never afraid to do something different.
4. South Park- The Simpsons existed to show America how much it sucked. South Park then came to show us how we've got worse since then. And god damn it was hilarious each time.
5. Rick and Morty- I had a hard time putting this over Futurama, but this show gets me a little more and I know once it gets more episodes it will pass Futurama more easily. Few shows, animated or not, got me thinking the way Mr. Meeseeks did.

Post by Krubixcube Sun Nov 16, 2014 6:39 am

Assume we're talking western shows, so with that in mind:

1. The Simpsons (not all, but when it was good it was SO influential and good)
2. South Park
3. Avatar: The Last Airbender
4. Invader Zim
5. Batman: The Animated Series - some really imaginative and great writing. Cool acting (Mark Hamil's joker is iconic). Good show.

Honorable Mentions: Loony Tunes (but it wasn't a show technically), Home Movies, Archer, Futurama

TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows Empty Re: TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows

Post by SanAndreasX Sun Nov 16, 2014 11:57 am

My top 5:

1. The Simpsons: It's been a part of my life in some form ever since I saw the first Butterfinger commercials back in 1988. I couldn't believe it when I found out the characters were getting their own show.

2. Futurama: Managed to rise above the "Simpsons in space" that everyone thought it would be and come up with some stuff that in many cases exceeds The Simpsons.

3. Ranma 1/2: Best TV anime ever, and it's funny in ways that cross Japanese/American cultural barriers.

4. King of the Hill: This show actually did better than The Simpsons in staying as a sitcom rather than moving into cartoon hijinks (Groening's original vision for The Simpsons was for it to be a semi-realistic cartoon sitcom), thought it did Flanderize itself to a lesser degree. It pokes a lot of fun at Texas culture, but also devotes equal time making fun of the stereotypes non-Texans have of the state. Having spent my later childhood and most of my adult life in Oklahoma, which is hopelessly caught in the orbit of Texas (which the show also makes fun of), I can appreciate a lot of the humor in the series.

5. The Pink Panther: A 1960s-70s cartoon show that ran entirely on visual humor (there were only two or three episodes out of 90 or so that had dialogue, and those were from the first season), and it had a memorable soundtrack by Henry Mancini. I still love watching it and the associated DePatie-Freleng cartoons The Ant and the Aardvark, Tijuana Toads, and The Inspector (which was based off of Inspector Clouseau from the movies).

Honorable mentions:

Garfield and Friends: This was probably my go-to cartoon show until The Simpsons came out.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987 series) - Campy but still the most entertaining superhero show out there, IMO.

Ah! My Goddess - Almost made my top 5, love Kosuke Fujishima's work.

Batman: TAS: I'll be honest and say that I've never really been into either DC or Marvel comics in general. That said, Batman: TAS was really well-written and had a lot of star power behind it in terms of both animation and voices, so it became one of the only two Batman properties I watched faithfully (the other being the 1960s live-action Batman series with Adam West and Burt Ward, LOL).

Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry: I left these off because neither of them is a cartoon "show" per se, they were originally theatrical shorts, but they're really still among the best cartoons ever made, and I still dig them.

TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows Empty Re: TV Top 5: Top 5 Animated Shows

1. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? - I loved these as a child, and even as a kid I used to get so mad when it was the episodes with Scrappy. Seasons 1-3 were the best, and even the Scooby-Doo movies were a great watch as well. I've always told myself if I win the lottery I'm approaching Cartoon Network about bringing the show back, with old equipment, awesome 60's chase songs, laugh track, and the whole shebang.

2. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast - He's the greatest talk show host ever. Not sure if it classifies as a cartoon, but there's animation, so I'm counting it.

3. Spider-Man - I loved this 90's cartoon. I've watched part of the new one that volvo has on his list, but I haven't finished it yet. If I were to pick a favorite from what I've seen though it would be the original.

4. X-Men - One of the coolest intro songs ever. Wolverine was so bad ass, if I found a genie when I was younger one of my 3 wishes was to have adamantium claws like Wolverine. Like Spider-Man, I loved how each episode advanced the story instead of telling a single story.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - It was my youth, I'd be cheating myself if I didn't throw it in here.

Honorable Mentions - The Brak Show, Batman the Animated Series, Regular Show, Johnny Quest, and if it would have happened, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated show. They had like 3 minutes worth of animation, and it would have been awesome. I believe it was going to be done by the guy that did Batman.

I think Scooby-Doo's been more or less in constant production since the day it started.

Who's been doing Shaggy's voice since Casey Kasem retired, anyway?

I think Matthew Lillard. The ones out now don't count because they're horrible. I'm talking about the older 1969 series. The older ones had such an amazing feel to them, and the animation was great, especially the backgrounds. Classic monsters, chase scenes, laugh track, looping animations, old time stuff.

I'm actually going to replace my bottom 2, just thought of something better...

4. Powderpuff Girls - Great humor, great villains, just a great show for kids and fun for adults too.

5. Samurai Jack - Great animation and directing.

I wasn't a fan of Powerpuff Girls for the most part, but Mojo Jojo was such a great villain. Wish the show was about him.

The episode where Mojo Jojo and Bubbles swap minds is awesome. Bubble is the most adorable cartoon character ever.

I think I may have shared this before, but besides live and music videos of my favorite bands, this is by far my favorite video on youtube. Someone took clips from the episode Jeepers, It's the Creeper and mixed it with the trailer of No Country For Old Men. It's brilliant.

1: The Simpsons.

2: Bugs Bunny. Yeah I know they were originally shorts. Meh. It's the perfect thing to marathon when you're bored. The animation is still classic and the conductor short will never get old

3: Adventure Time. Some episodes don't really work for me but I can never guess where this show will go next. Sometimes it's really weird, sometimes it's really dark, and sometimes it's childish

4: Futurama. Apart from the occasional brilliant episode this show was always in the shadow of The Simpsons to me, but it's still among the best

5: King of the Hill. It was rarely as funny as The Simpsons or Futurama (firefighter and porn episodes are exceptions) but was always entertaining for it's unique characters and friendly tone. Another good marathon show

I just remembered. Back in the 1970s, Hanna-Barbera produced a cartoon sitcom caled "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home" that was kind of a proto-King of the Hill about an uptight father and business owner in southern California (which was even more socially conservative in the 1970s than Texas is now) dealing with his hippie kids and the social trends of the 70s they brought with them, and a right-wing nutjob neighbor who was like KotH's Dale Gribble on steroids to the point where he had even formed his own neighborhood militia. Tom Bosley (the dad from Happy Days) played the dad on this show. I think Mike Judge and Greg Daniels even cited this show as an inspiration for King of the Hill. I have this on DVD.

I wish they got to finish Samurai Jack. I could tell it was building to something big and even though what we got was good, I felt like we missed out on the best it had to offer.

I really liked the episodes of Samurai Jack where there was almost no talking. Just him kicking ass, slow motion screaming.

Which is why I included The Bugs Bunny Show on my list. True, its an anthology of the shorts but until they were made available on dvd, it would be the only way for children to see them, which they did for about 4 decades. I didn't realize the show was on for that long.

My favorites are probably Ren and Stimpy, The Simpsons and Rick and Morty. I'd have to think a little more to decide what would come next.
