Top 5 1up Anything

1up is officially dead as if today. The site is down for good. So thought I'd make this in honor of our old web home.

Edit: Kay gave me a better idea for this to not restrict it to things we like, so since we all may have some 1up thing we want to mention, make your own top 5 topic. Can be users, blogs, anything really just as long as it's 1up related.

I disagree with tallying. Part of the fun is reading the lists and explanations of each individual. Which was actually something I listed in this thread but my internet and power crapped out before I hit send. I was pissed. Oh well. I'll attempt the list again tomorrow. Didn't do it from phone because 1up deserves a more thought out process.

I better get to copying my blogs then. That's a bummer.

I don't quite know where to begin with this one...I was always a lurker at that site and the forums long before I stumbled upon your guy's group.

1. The Community - 1up was the only social media site I enjoyed. I think if they would have rolled with that instead of having a dipshit like Jeremy Parish run it, it might have had a chance. They really fucked themselves by staying with the original format after anyone with credibility left.

2. Integrity - Before the demise, it was always the most trusted source for information. I'm guessing the anti-click-bait mentality is what was its downfall. Sad, really. I still don't know of a site, gaming or not, that treats itself, and readers, with respect.

3. Diversity - Through blog-sharing I got to know many different opinions that, while I may disagree, were fun to read. I always felt the people behind the keyboard were making their opinions inclusive instead of definitive.

4. The Format - In the later days it slowly turned into a Gawker-esque bullshit feed, but it still had a great design. Maybe a little too ambitious for the time. Che called me a Luddite in the letters section of EGM, but at least I try and keep my finger to the pulse instead of folding whenever shit gets real.

5. The Play Station - When I came back to 1up and started blogging again I found that forum. It was something special and that shows in how we have this "new home" now. It was, and still is, a place I could go to find like-minded individuals with whom I can discuss gaming, hobbies, interests, and life in general. I'm not saying I love you guys, but I'd definitely push T-wolf in front of a bullet for anyone here. You're welcome.

I had someone troll me once because I wrote a review of Killzone and he came on and just said a bunch of negative stuff, clearly as a 360 fanatic. I deleted his comment and got some bizarre message from him. I'm going to go and get it...

One random email I got from him - Just thought I'd cruise on over to your profile to read some of the other stuff you've posted. I hadn't even read your profile age at that point, so i decided to read your entries and try to take a guess at your age based on the things you've said and the way you said them. When i had read enough to take a guess at how old i thought you might be, i looked up at your profile and to my surprise, you are 27 years old! Damn, i suck at this guessing game, because i thought you were 14.

Second after I deleted his fanboy posts a day later - I posted a comment on your blog that expressed a different reason for hating Killzone other than the reasons that u claimed most people hated it. YOUR BLOG WAS ABOUT WHY MOST PEOPLE HATE KILLZONE 3. I then expressed a different reason for hating it. You then took it upon yourself to try to make an example out of me because my reason apparently wasnt good enough for you?!? And subsequently, i called you out on your lack of train of thought. You didnt like that, and i fully understand because i hate when people try to make me look like a douche. But you are a douche. You erased my comment from your blog. WOW. REALLY?!? What a fuckin bitch you are!!! His profile literally existed for like 3 days, day one to come and blast my blog about a Sony game. Day two to continue complaining about a Sony game and accuse me of being 14. Day 3 to flip out because I deleted his fanboy posts where he tried to talk me into killing myself. His one friend was someone else that was basically game master but for X-Box. Pathetic. Parts of 1up like that I do not miss. Oh and the reason Killzone 3 was such a horrible game was due to the fact it didn't have co-op split screen, just made it a completely unplayable game. I understand some people didn't like the direction it went after 2, but that wasn't his complaint, it was lack of co-op split screen that made it the worst game ever.

Thanks for sharing, Bret. I honestly enjoyed reading that fucked off crap. It leads to the point of why 1up was so great; without weeding out crazy shit like that, how would this forum exist? That's humanity at work, mang. Natural selection and shit.

I should probably go smoke weed or something after that thought. People still smoke weed, right?

I never came across any trolls during my time at 1up. I'm almost jealous I don't have any fun stories to tell. I'm just glad Lazlowe invited me to The Play Station, who I might have thought was female at the time. I was so confused over his gender for awhile. lol

I think I just burst my way onto the playstation after lurking around the other forums for a while...I don't remember. But I"m glad I did, you're all (with the exception of certain bearded individuals) good people. But I remember 1up since for a while it took a very...legitimate, for lack of a better word, view towards game journalism. They didn't ride the hype wave, they wrote lots of editorials, interesting, well-researched features. They really went against the trend of game journalism driven by and formed by the companies themselves.

That RockOnD character is the one that brought me to the original forum. He was a real nice guy. Anyone ever talk to him anymore?

1. RockonD - one of the nicest dudes ever. Its a shame he's not really around much anymore. I see him on PSN from time to time, but he's usually on Netflix. He's the one who encouraged me to join his club, which is how I met the majority of all of you.

4. The ease of following everyone's blogs
5. The 1up podcasts and video shows were all pretty awesome. I miss listening to them. Most of the people who were on them have their own shows now... but its not the same or Arthur Gies ruined them.

2. Blogs in which I proclaim that I'm fed up with a game, will never play it again.......only to pick it up again in a few months

In his defense, Gamemaster4747 was mostly a funny troll and far from the worst troll on the board at that. He wasn't actively mean-spirited like some other folks.
