Was really hoping we'd get a glimpse of God of War 4 at PSX. Still waiting to see Bend's next game too. The wait continues.

Reviewed Rise of the Tomb Raider. Awesome game. Think Bret would like it especially with how much snow is in it http://www.pixlbit.com/review/949/rise_of_the_tomb_raider_review

I did buy the last Tomb Raider game when it was cheap. So if it comes to PS4 I'll play it if I like the first one. First Tomb Raider game since the first PS1 game.

I'd buy the last Tomb Raider game when the price comes down a bit, like Bret. But I've definitely heard a lot of good things about the new one.

Question. When you put together your GOTY lists, what generally matters more: Length and replayability, or a game that's just really memorable?

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
Replayability I guess but more in the sense of whether I think I will want to replay this game 10 years later

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
Hmmm... I feel like I mostly replay games because I like them a lot. So I feel a memorable game would be replayable for me usually even if it doesn't provide other incentive to replay it if that makes sense. Unless it is memorable in the Assassin's Creed 3 sort of way. This probably doesn't help answer the question!

It's $15 right now at Wal-Mart, to me that's a really good price. Also, they have some other good games in the $20 section you might want to look at. The $15 price should be at other store, but I'd suggest calling before you go all the way there (not sure how far you live from one), would hate for you to drive out there and they either not have it or have it at that price.

Pretty much I'm in exactly the same boat as Trip. A memorable game that had some impact on me that I could see myself playing again all the way through in 5-10 years means more to me than a game that's a got a lot of "features".

A game has to be memorable for me. All of the awesome features that MGSV has, it'll still probably be the game I play the least going forward in that series. Great characters and story usually win out for me.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I don't need a great story for it to hit GOTY personally. Tomb Raider had a laughably bad story yet it's still my favorite this year while Dark Souls is my favorite of 2011 and has next to no story. Not against one either, since Mass Effect won every year a new one came out.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I'm sure I've had a game of the year have gameplay over story, but I'll have to think on it.
*thinking on it*
I think it was 2010, but I had to joint GOTY winners and that was Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, and Dragon Quest IX. DQIX had very little story, but that level grinding and questing really kept me coming back for more. The only other GOTY winner that I might put in the gameplay over story department is Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal, but even then I think it had the best story of the series, except for maybe A Crack in Time.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I'd put ACiT's story over UYA. Touched on a few deeper themes UYA wasn't concerned about without sacrificing any humor. UYA is like a good cartoon while ACiT is like a pretty good Pixar movie.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
Story is pretty low on my list when it comes to games. It doesn't hurt, but I don't feel it is ever the main reason for something being my GotY (I certainly can't think of one).
Also, I feel ACiT's humor definitely wasn't on the same level as UYA's, so I think there was a sacrifice there. I did like the move to a more serialized story in the PS3 games though so I could see going either way on the story overall. The gameplay is where UYA really proves superior to ACiT.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I prefer ACIT's gameplay just for 3rd person R1 shooting. UYA has weapons slightly edging its ACiT's out but the thrill I get flipping around while shooting can't be matched.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I like the story more in ACiT, but villain and humor hands down goes to UYA. I prefer gameplay of UYA for the weapons and the awesome ability to play in first person. Why I still can't do this in a Ratchet game is beyond me.
I've had GOTY winners not just get it for story though, they also have great gameplay as well. I really like the story of the first and second Walking Dead game, but it won't be winning any GOTY for me. So I guess they have to do both well, but I don't think it'll happen often where a game wins for me based purely on story or gameplay.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I have always jumped and flipped while shooting in Ratchet. It certainly got easier and more efficient to do so with the control changes over the years, but I personally had no issue doing it on the PS2 games. I never got the appeal of playing in first-person mode in UYA though. Doesn't feel right and gives you less perspective on battles. Plus I didn't even like it when Ratchet's armor covered him up like some of the higher level ones in the series do, so I hate not seeing Ratchet at all. I guess I am just more of a third-person fan in general too.
Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I felt like UYA was made to be a shooter. Just so fast and fun. I switch back to 3rdperson when not engaged in combat though, and depending on what weapon I'm using. Most guns though, first person all the way baby.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I don't like how later ones cover him up either. I guess you could still flip, but it really doesn't feel natural to me if it's on O as opposed to R1

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
UYA had the option to change views the the quick-select, right? Did you use that, Bret?
I've always played in 3rd person. And while R1 shooting is definitely easier, I still kind of miss using the O button—stretching your thumb width across the controller so that you can jump without stopping shooting.
What does everyone think about Ratchet's personality evolution? I hope the movie has a little more attitude than what's been in the trailers.

Yeah, my second ring was designated for all of the different camera angles. I need to play that game again. Haven't played the Vita version I own, so I might have to rectify that soon.

Well story isn't always what makes a game memorable. I'll replay Rayman Legends for years to come because of gameplay, for example.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
What was people's reaction to the TellTale Batman game announcement from a couple weeks back?
Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I recently finished the Tales from Borderlands game and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It might have been my favorite of all those style of games, including Life is Strange... but not by much. I think its easier to make a game like that when it doesn't have to be so tied down to the source material. Borderlands had a few characters from the main game and obviously the setting, but it felt like its own thing.
The Game of Thrones game felt kind of pointless, because they sandwiched it in between two seasons of the show. The characters were meant to seem important but when placed next to more familiar characters from the show I was constantly reminded the whole plot doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
Batman could go either way. It has a huge cast of characters to pull from, but I would hope they try to make a unique story with some interesting decisions to make along the way. But I worry it'll be another dark Batman game with a story like the Arkham games where its Batman vs. Joker. I'll be interested to see some footage closer to release.

True. Super Mario World or Mario games in general almost have no story and they're very memorable. Typically it's heavy story related games that end up being my fave of the year, though there are some exceptions but it's rare.

So Kubert let me know he's an awesome person today by getting me that game about bread I've always wanted, but for some reason never could justify getting. Also he spends too much money on coffee.

Re: Gaming Chat Thread
I will post the year-end award threads on the 31st. I figure I will just use what we used last year. After a few years of doing this, I think we have a good set of categories or whatever.
Re: Gaming Chat Thread
Indeed! I feel I've actually played enough new stuff to actually say relevant things this year too ^_^

Cleaned out my basement and set up the old 27" CRT TV, and I'm currently playing Metal Gear Solid the way it was meant to be seen. Hope to tackle some games that were meant for that kind of television.
