Games that, despite your best efforts, you can't finish Empty Games that, despite your best efforts, you can't finish

Post by Krubixcube Tue Mar 26, 2013 4:03 am

I have a few games like this. I've picked them up several times, I try and beat them but...just...can't. Something stops me. It's not that you hate the game or anything like that just you can't seem to find the drive to beat it.

Discuss.

Bioshock. Just the way the game's paced combined with how much I hate how the shooting feels makes me lose all motivation to keep playing whenever I try getting back into it. I'd like to try and beat it some day.

I'm with volvo on Bioshock. Played twice but couldn't get into it. Like I've said before on a different thread, I do not like games where the whole game is told in first person. I just do not like it.

I'm attempting Farcry 2 for the second time, and I don't really want to continue and that game is told in the first person perspective.

Then there's Oblivion, which is a game I should love but I cannot finish or get into. I think I've started it three times.

All three games story is told entirely in first person. I hate when games do that.

Lost Odyssey comes to mind, for me. I really enjoy the game and it was quite fun but after my save data got corrupted the first time, among other things, I couldn't find the motivation to finish it. I'll get to it someday.

Fallout 3. I've only managed to get through the first 1/3 of the game and stop. No real reason, I just stop. I share that same problem with Skyrim, well most Elder Scrolls titles actually. Again, it's not because I don't like the games, because I do, I just can't seem to stick with it beyond a certain point.

GTAIV. Still haven't beaten it, probably won't either. Which is a shame because I liked the game and I think I was pretty close to finishing it.

For the most part, I do eventually get around to finishing the games I start. It might take a long, long time (Dead Space 2 is the longest, at two years) - but I do. The only recent game I think I ditched before I finished it was Dead Rising 2. I liked it, but couldn't bring myself to invest a lot of time into it.

Also, I never finished Fallout: New Vegas. Hell, I barely started it. I just don't have the time for big RPGs and stuff anymore.

Demon's Souls. Ended up selling this game because it gets so fucking boring for me after awhile EVERY FUCKING TIME. I get it its about challenge blah blah, but fucking if people can beat it without spending a goddamn soul it makes me feel like all the time i spent grinding and upgrading equipment is worthless. It really is honestly because upgrades are so fucking minimal they barely do anything until you put your life savings into them.

Deadspace - Because I'm too scared

Skyrim - Because the combat is so horrible and the game is so big

Borderlands 2 - Grind grind grind, filler filler filler

For me, EVERY GTA game. I really liek those games, they are fun but I never ever beat them. I have fun with them for hours but then just lose track of what I'm doing or hit one particular mission which is bullshit and just give up.

I hope the next Grand Theft Auto brings back the more arcadey car controls of the PS2 GTA games.

I hope it doesn't take itself as serious as GTA IV did*. It was so weird having it be this serious story with all the usual parody and lampooning in the world around it. You're one or the other - choose.

*- Not saying it has to be Saints Row: The Third, but not as heavy as Nico's story became.

Yeah...it was a really weird juxtaposition between the still funny radio ads while shit was getting real in the story.

Here's to hoping it's more arcadey...and that I finish it. I think the reason I get frustrated with GTA games is I WANT them to be truly open where I can choose to approach a mission but swimming in from the sea like a merman assassin but when you deviate from the mission path it either aborts the mission or scolds you and that kind of defeats the purpose for me. I enjoyed the fucking around much more in those games...thus why I never beat them I guess. RDR was the exception (to the beating thing...same problems in the gameplay though).

Another game I can never beat is Wild Arms 3...it's a competent RPG that i Like good enough but I can never beat it ever. *sigh*

For some of the bigger missions in Grand Theft Auto they need to start adding check points. Driving 3 miles in a mission only to lose and have to restart is very frustrating.

Also, I hope they either tone down the "friends", or cut the idea all together. I hated getting calls while I'm in the middle of something by someone who wants to play darts or something. And if I don't drop everything, they get all pissy... Ugh. Hated it.

Agreed Bannen. I just stopped answering the phone and it seemed to make them less pissy. They always wanted to hang out when I was doing a mission or just finally making it to the mission location. That city was just so damn huge.

Thanks for reminding me of the OTHER reason I stopped playing GTAIV.

Another game that fits this category for me is Amnesia. I played through most of it on my mac and when I got my new PC the save couldn't come with it. And I just haven't had the motivation (or the guts) to play through it again.

I mostly just fuck around and go on kill sprees, have crazy police chases, go parachuting in GTA. I love that stuff to death, but have never finished the story on any of them. Partly because when I used to watch my brother play games, I rarely would then also play them. But the ones I did try, the excessive travel because of the save/checkpoint system did drag it down a bit.

So I guess if we are talking about actually finishing games, these would apply, but I haven't given any of them a genuine shot. I just preferred passing the controller back and forth with my brother doing stupid shit.

I can't finish Amnesia, either. It has nothing to do with scares, I just have no motivation to come back to it. It's taken me months to put just a few hours into that game.

Well I'm going to defend GTA 4 as I always do against the hordes of Saints Row fans. I want it to continue on the path of serious story telling. GTA 4 was outstanding for those reasons and the friends stuff was fine. It forced you to do side stuff and built the characters and you could always just turn it off. The only thing I want to change in GTA is the god damn Rockstar movement controls.

I'm not saying Saints Row is "superior" by any means. The dramatic differences between their attitudes makes it difficult to honestly put GTA IV and The Third side-by-side and say one is truly the best. Both do what they want to do well - I'd just like to see Rockstar tone back the grit a bit. In a way, at this point, only their genre is the same. I'm a big fan of GTA, and will get V on day one - I just wish it would decide what it wants to be. Serious or parody, but both don't gel well together. Something more akin to San Andreas' story would be nice - not in plot, but in tone.

Hasn't that always been GTA though. A little bit goofy, a little bit gritty. Overall a big laugh at a period of American culture. Gta 4 is just so freaking clever in a lot of the details.

RDR was too serious imo.

But RDR was consistent at least. I'm with Bannen on this one. It's not that what it did it did horribly by any means it was just hard to take Niko's struggle seriously when his emotional moment was followed by me accidentally hitting a tree and sending him reeling through the sky into an elderly woman while a joke ad plays on the radio.

Well I have tried and tried time again but I just cant bring myself to finish Dark Souls. There are time when I really like the game but then it does its very best to piss me off and I put it back down. I feel like I might give it one more shot before Dark Souls 2 comes out. We will see.

I have to agree with what Killa said with Dark Souls - as well as Demon's Souls. Although I have yet to try to get back into the games after stopping. I might go back though....

On the other hand, I don't ever see myself getting back into Prototype. I couldn't connect with the character and above all, he seemed like a complete and utter douche bag.
