The RPG Thread Empty The RPG Thread

Post by Krubixcube Mon Jul 08, 2013 9:22 am

Ok, so there was talk of making a general RPG thread, so I'd say anything to do with RPG games you're anticipating, systems you want to discuss...put it in here. If you want to the discuss the plot of a current game, I'd just make a thread for that game to avoid spoilers and whatnot.

SO, to start things off, what systems in modern RPGs (western or Japanese) do you feel need updated or changed? Or to rephrase, what systems feel outdated or half-baked?

I'd love to see a return to world maps in games. Ni No Kuni did this, and it needs to be a trend again. I remember running around Final Fantasy VII and IX's world and just having a blast exploring everything. Imagine if they made something like Dragon Quest VIII for Final Fantasy games. That would just be amazing. I love world maps.

I'd like to see WRPGs be more exclusive with what your abilities can do like how they used to be. For example I'm playing Kotor again now and since I'm a Scout I don't have persuade, so I can't play out quests exactly the way I want to. But it makes up for it because I can hack computers well which is gets me information or unlocks something so I can get more options in different quests. Stuff like that makes me want to replay the game more and I have more fun as a master of a few trades with a couple party members compensating at times than letting you obtain everything if you can get to a high enough level first like Mass Effect or Bethesda games

Yeah, I know what you mean volvocrusher. I feel old games when you picked a specialization it completely changed the way you played the game and really closed/opened options. In general I think good "role playing", which obviously JRPGs are less concerned with, should make every choice a bad/positive choice.

Also, world maps...yes! Supposedly, back when FFXV was Versus they were saying a world map was coming but hard to know if that's still in there or not.

Also, I'm finding playing FFIX I am blazing through it. I was a kind of stupid kid so it took me forever to play it, and then the last time I played it I did it with the guide to get 100%, so now that I'm just kind of playing it and doing mild levels of sidequests I'm crushing it.

Must say though, and let me know if you agree, but I've noticed with FF now that I'm older they are pretty bad about telling you about sidequests and things. Even Ispen's castle (where you have to equip low level weapons) they give you HINTS but there's no like riddle or something at the gate.

There were so many side quests as compared to VII and VIII with IX from what I remember. I want to complete that Moogle Mail one, because moogles are awesome from this game. Did you also get Steiner's ultimate weapon? Which is really hard to do because you have to get so far in a very short amount of time. What's everyone's preferred lineup for IX? I always liked having Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, Steiner....in that order as well. I always liked having two guys on the outside protecting the girl and whatever sex Vivi was (I'd say boy, but a little kid boy). It offered no extra protection, but it just looked right to me.

I think Vivi has some pretty good black casting skills. He's best paired with Steiner though, since they can team up and do some attacks together. Thought that was a really cool feature that I don't recall ever being used in any other Final Fantasy game. I never really used Amarant or Quina, but really liked all of the other characters.

NO ONE I know ever uses Quina. S/he has some pretty hilarious and stupid dialogue but when it comes to combat s/he is a worthless sack of shit. Learns more spells than everyone else but only 3-4 of them aren't fucking useless.

I like to use the ladies Garnet, Eiko, and Freya. Summoner is my favorite FF class and this game gives you two of them FECK YEAR!

I like the fighter-types myself. The endgame of Final Fantasy titles generally favors strong melee fighters.

I didn't find them to be useless. Just some heavy black magic hitters. I guess when I replay Final Fantasy X I can see for sure if she's useless, but I always have Vivi in my party to pair with Steiner.

I usually use everyone that isn't Kimarhi. That fucker gives dragoons a bad name he's so boring. FFX HD is supposed to have "the expert sphere grid" which gives you free reign on character development. Totally sending Yuna down Auron's path. Lulu Rikku's maybe. So many possibilities, but Kimarhi will still get ignored completely

I'm praying to god I don't hear Johnny Test everytime i hear Tidus speak in FFXHD

Honestly by the end of the game i didnt even need anyone but Rikku. Her speed was high enough that i could just spam quick hits and nothing else would even get turns.

I might start christmas shopping early this year so I may need advice: my brother is interested in Hyperdimension Neptunia and was hoping if any one like Kay or choco here or anyone who has played it can tell me if it's good and possibly a place I can get it new for a good price. My brother isn't really one to try something new so I'm only doing this in favor of him playing something other than Sonic and Kirby.

By the time I got to the end of FFX, my party was pretty much Tidus and Auron doing all the fighting with Yuna to do the healing.

I'd recommend starting with Mk2 or just playing Victory. I dont think the first one really has gameplay suited to someone who hasn't played RPGs much. Victory is the best in the series and can be enjoyed on its own since it takes place in alternate universe and doesnt have too many connections to the other games beyond jokes about how Nepgear sucked as a protagonist in Mk2.

I dunno though, I don't really know your brother that well, and Neptunia is kind of a really niche title. They do what they do well, but only really appeal to a certain audience. If you'd think he'd find the type of jokes I make funny then he might be in it. That said however i think Ni No Kuni would be a better choice. It kind of has that type of charm Nintendo games have in a way. It really reminds me of Windwaker in some aspects. If you still have a 360 Blue Dragon might be a good idea too its kind of like a saturday mornin cartoon.

Yeah, I wouldn't really recommend Neptunia as someone who reviewed Victory. I recognize it as a good game for its audience, but only people who love that style of anime specifically would enjoy it. I think it would be especially bad too since your bro's probably too young to get all of the sexual innuendos.

If i could throw out another recommendation. FFX was the first RPG I beat, mustve been when i was 12-14 and didnt play games much. The collection might be a good idea too, but i do think Ni No Kuni or Blue Dragon would be the best choices based on what I know anyways.

It's already been announced for physical release the reason why is the games are going to separate and i dont think a price has been decided yet or at least it hasnt been revealed. Square actually said they would be released seperately because they both couldnt fit on one card.

Started playing Final Fantasy XIII-2 today. What's everyone's opinions on the game? I didn't love XIII, but I didn't hate it either. General consensus was that this game was better. Seeing a moogle is a step in the right direction, kupo kupo!

After months of searching I stumbled upon my GBA copy of Phantasy Star Collection (it was somewhere in the back of my truck (in the cabin of course). I'm not sure why it makes me happy since PS has a save bug and it has III instead of IV but I do. It's probably because I've progressed further on both 1 & 2 on the GBA than I have any other platform.
