I'm sorry but that is defending it. You're basically putting that they don't always work in a positive light which is defending them, whether or not that's your intention. I get annoyed because it gives the impression that controls that don't always work aren't a serious issue when that's a huge problem

Let's spin this discussion. What would you like to see in the Wii U Zelda entry?

No gimmicks, just make it play like the GCN version of TP. Also harder combat, perhaps have difficulty settings from the start.

One of two things. The first is an overhead view on the gamepad with a normal view on the TV. Build the entire game around puzzles that play off that, know Nintendo loves to do the parallel worlds things in games and that would be a fantastic gimmick to implement that.
The other is what Kay said, no gimmicks. The Wii U gamepad is used as a quick and easy way to switch items. Just make it a different kind of world than OoT or TP like Wind Waker and Skyward Sword did.

Big huge overworld, six or seven great dungeons, lots of enemies with good AI, and an exotic new setting that still fits into the Zelda universe.

Gimmicks isn't just a word for non-traditional control schemes. Other things could be considered a gimmick. Like Majora's Mask's time limit.

To be fair then every Zelda game has a gimmick. ALttP's Light/Dark Worlds, WW's sailing, TP's wolf form, they ALL do something like the time limit. I mean control gimmicks they don't belong in this series.

I know a lot of people dislike the time limit, but as I've said before it allowed them to make a more believable world with A LOT more character interaction then the N64 would allow. I think i've also said before I agree with it being bad in dungeons, but it just did so much for the overworld I didnt even give a damn. Dungeons are literally an after thought in Majora's mask the game focused on the stuff outside of them. My favorite Zelda games are MM, and WW cause they do the overworld, and characters so well. That's what matters most to me.

Link's Awakening didn't have any gimmicks, but that ironically could be considered its gimmick.

I'd say its gimmick was being the first handheld Zelda that at the time was all it really needed.

Re: The Legend of Zelda Series Discussion

I just hate how the term gimmick has been re-appropriated I guess. It's fine to dislike different controls. Just say what you mean. Labeling them as the only gimmicks in the series seems off to me. (Edit: Sorry this is a bit of a larger pet peeve of mine... not trying to take it out on you guys... haha).

I'd like a return to traditional controls too though Greenman's first idea sounds cool to me as well. Big detailed, interesting fully explorable largely on land overworld is a must for the next game. Overworld issues have been the biggest problem in recent games for me. I think Skyward Sword did a good job at varying item use so it was less predictable, so that is something I'd like them to actually carry over from that game. Maybe some non-traditional dungeon designs kind of like the boat in SS or Snowpeak Ruins in TP too. Higher difficulty would be good as others have mentioned. Not just combat, but puzzles that really stump me.

I'm definitely in favor of non-traditional dungeons. Maybe even make an entire town a dungeon, but it's overrun with monsters and once you've finished all the puzzles you solved let you get around easier. Actually, that would be a perfect first dungeon.

Late to the party. In my opinion the best Zelda is Ocarina of Time (and it's the correct opinion). In a Wii U Zelda game... I really just want traditional controls and a lot of fun items and dungeons. I actually would like to see a return to the classic story of Zelda. I don't need to see another gimmicky setting like, Zelda at sea or Zelda in the sky. Just put me in Hyrule. Make Gannon the bad guy, make me save Zelda and the world and give me some cool shit to play with along the way.

I'm not saying the "gimmicks" if we call them that are bad, but it would be interesting to me to see more world building and stuff to explore than a new control scheme

We should do this type of topic for more series. You guys could always do it for Final Fantasy unless it has been done here before.

I wouldn't mind a TR conversation. Discuss the LAU trilogy's strengths and weaknesses. I don't think we've discussed them in-depth since you finished them all.

Well I actually still need to finish Anniversary. Remember all the levels I've played and have enjoyed them, but need a few more to beat. To show how crazy it would get though: Legend's my favorite of the three, at least unless what's left of Anniversary is the greatest thing ever.

Honestly the last few levels of Anni are its worst. I'd love to hear an explanation for why Legend is your favorite. I could see why someone's favorite would be Legend, but I can't for the life of me figure out why it'd be your favorite given your usual tastes. I shall make a thread.

Trip one thing you should have learned about my tastes by now is that they're completely unpredictable. Even I'm surprised half the shit I think. Like how replaying it is making me feel that my GOTY for 2011 may actually be Kirby's Return to Dreamland.

A Final Fantasy discussion would be great, I imagine there would be a lot to talk about and there seem to be a lot of us who love the series.

One of you two should do the Final Fantasy Thread. I think Greenman's debate idea will likely take a bit more planning. One like this thread about FF would be good in the meantime I think.

FF is a really hard series to pick a favorite. It's easier to pick a least favorite one in that series...

Here's a good question: Which dungeon is your favorite? Mine would be Minish Cap's Palace of Winds. Thought the puzzles were great, the layout was just tricky enough to be fun without being frustrating, and the boss and Roc Cape were just awesome, I really love when 2D Zeldas give you an item that lets you jump. Also really love dungeons that have a good portion take place outdoors for some reason and that one was .
