Top Five Sports Games
This one might be a bit more limited for participation, but Matt suggested it and I'd be curious what people think. Favorite sports game. Extreme sports are fair game of course too. Explain why you chose what you chose. And if you choose a series at least mention your favorite from that series.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
1. FIFA series - I've bought every game since '94 or '96. I'm thinking '96 though. Each game feels different, and not always for the better. Still, if I love/hate the new one more than the last installment, I dedicate all of my time to the new one. As far as a favorite, I think it would be FIFA 2007 because of all of the times I played it with friends and it still had my favorite player of all time that retired recently, but I think FIFA 12 was really great as well.
2. NHL Hitz - The one where it became 5 on 5. Me and my cousin would make the goalies really good, and turn off penalties but keep icing. We had some good times with that game.
3. Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball - Awesome baseball game me and my friends still sometimes play. Baseball games suck now, just like the sport.
4. Super Tecmo Bowl 3 - Loved this back in the day. The best of the tecmo bowl games. Even better than the disappointing HD release.
5. Hot Shots Golf - These are just really fun, quick playing golf games. We'll pick Vita or PS3 version for a fave.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
This one is actually pretty easy for me
1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (What I believe is the pinnacle of the series loved the switch to a more open world, where objectives were seperate and not all in one timed run. The Underground games went off in a direction which i loved too but they just werent the same)
2. Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (do i really need to explain this one!?)
3. Pangya (Animu golf with cute girls, rpg elements, and a ridiculously stupid story it was amazing)
4. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Remember playing this a lot when it first came out. Tried to get like -18s on all the courses)
5. SSX (The only real extreme sports game i actually liked this gen. I honestly cant stand skate for a few reasons, but thats for another discussion as it involves more than just gameplay, but SSX was cool, and had a ton of content too)

Re: Top Five Sports Games
I'm afraid to ask, but why don't you like skate. I love it. The controls are amazing and exactly the direction Skateboarding games needed to go in my opinion. I loved the THPS games, but that style of game was tired as hell after 80 sequels and I loved Skate's new take on the sub genre.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
I don't think the gameplay is bad really, but it's just when I played skate 2 the way it handled the female character in the story really upset me. The character has to be male, and the only way you can be a female is by a sex change. It made me uncomfortable to be honest. I'm fine with them giving you the option to change your sex, and I dont have problems with it.I have quite a few trans friends and refer to myself as bigender, but it just made me feel out of place alienated really like they just threw that in their half-assed to appeal to female gamers more, but it just made me feel like the game didnt want me to play it. It's the first and only time thats happened. Where a game made me feel uncomfortable for being a female.
So yeah there. That's kind of hard for me to say since I'm one of the people who hates this whole "feminist" movement in gaming, but thats one example where it actually disgusted me probably the only example, but it is one. I'll never play the games in that series for that reason. They made me feel like it was wrong for me to play it.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
@Kay: Oh alright. I could see that being bothersome. I didn't even recall that but I just played as a male character obviously. That's an odd way for the game to handle that. Sorry if that was hard to talk about or anything. I was just curious.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
@spiddy: I say leave racing games out. It could really be its own top five I think.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
No problem, It's not really hard to talk about in an emotional way or anything has more to do with my pride actually. My character makes it hard for me to admit to being offended by stuff like this ha. Also whenever this kind of topic is brought up bad things ALWAYS happen, but this forum is cool so its not really a problem. Unless some random crazy "feminist" pops up.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
I agree leaving racing out, because then I'd have to go back and add Super Mariokart.
We should keep doing top five genre pieces like this. For the most part people play all sorts of genres.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
1. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey- Come on. How has no one said this yet? It's a classic!
2. MLB The Show- This game is almost perfect, year in and year out. It's so detailed and it makes you feel like you're really at the ballpark. The players are all so authentic. They spend so much time getting the animations down with players at-bat routines. It's incredible. And they consistently nail the controls as well. My only gripe is online play is usually pretty terrible... but that is the fault of peoples crappy internet connections more than anything.
3. WWF No Mercy- Wrestling might be fake, but in a video game, you bet its a sport! This game had arguably the best roster in any wrestling game... it was in the heart of the Attitude Era. It also had a pretty amazing create a wrestler mode and lots of different match types for up to four players.
4. Mario Golf (specifically the N64 one)- The simplicity of this game really did it for me. I don't care as much for other iterations of Mario Golf, because like most Nintendo stuff, all they do is add stupid crap onto the game that is already awesome--see: Smash Balls in Smash Bros. Either way, I spent so much time with this as a kid I can't leave it off the list.
5. NBA Street Vol. 2- Had to put a basketball game on here and I think this is the one I've enjoyed the most. It was oozing with style and had a lot of great modes to back it up. It was a blast to play and the character animations were very smooth. It also had a great combination of fun single player and multiplayer modes. Good stuff!

Re: Top Five Sports Games
1. SSX (specifically Tricky and 3) - You can remove your snowboard in mid-air and spin it around your head. What's not cool about that? Even the current gen version, which took all the challenge out of landing tricks and replaced it with annoying pits of death, was still fun.
2. Skate - I've only played the full version of 1, and the demos for 2 and 3, but I had a lot of fun with them because of the ways you can play around with the environment and make up cool tricks
3. NHL 08 (and later) - EA's hockey games were pretty lame up to 06, but they got so much better in the two years after. 08 has a tendency to rip you off by deciding the winner before you even play, but when it gives you a good match it's great.
4. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Underground - I played either 3 or 4 as well. All of them were great but Underground was the first one I played on the Ps2
5. Probably an arcadey Basketball game or something. I played a lot but I don't remember what any of them were called
If I cared about baseball at all, MLB the Show would probably be on this list.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
No particular order:
Pigskin Football - Played this at the local Pizza Hut for hours at a time. Then it came out on the Genesis, and I spent more time playing it than I should have.
Mutant League Football - Bribe the ref? Exploding football? Kill opposing team memebers? Dangerous stadiums? Robots vs. Lizards? YES!
Mutant League Hockey - Make all that stuff up there hockey-related, and add sharks under the ice.
2K Football - The only football game that didn't involve mutant or robots that I truly loved...
NBA JAM - Nothing else to say, right?

Re: Top Five Sports Games
1. MLB Power Pros- Wish we'd get more of these games. Terribly outdated roster aside, this had really fun mechanics and an insane amount of content. One was even like Persona but with baseball instead of fighting demons
2. NBA Street- These games were awesome. It wasn't just about scoring, it was about doing it with style. And it was fun as hell.
3. NFL Street- This used to be the go to game me and my buds would play. Tackling was so much more fun here.
4. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2- Should probably play one of the later ones. Just a fun arcadey game.
5. MLB The Show- What Matt said. Should get this on Vita.

2. SKATE - THPS isn't my bag. THRASHER almost got it right. This game is a true skating sim. I never played 2. I asked my wife what Kay was talking about since she played it. She couldn't give me a direct answer on the gender thing. I'll have to play it and figure that whole ordeal out. Sounds fucked off if what you say is true, Kay.
The main character is canonically some kind of faceless nameless male. When you go into the character editor its to change him so the cops don't recognize him which also put me off. Changing him to a female is basically put off as being a disguise rather than something by choice. The first few lines the supporting cast give you really made me uncomfortable too. They are all like "dude, what happened to you!?" (which could just be a generic line, but in that context it just was ugh) you dont question a sex change like that its disgusting to act like that. It doesnt really push this stuff further in, but the start of it just really really turned me off. It's the first game i quit due to being uncomfortable as opposed to it being shit. It's been awhile since i played it so i wont rule out me overreacting, but it is what it is it made me uncomfortable then.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
I think that Golf game is Golden Tee spiddy. Though for all I know there were several arcade games like that with the trackball. Anyway, I played it a few times. It was pretty cool.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
Theres an animu fishing game on Vita made by the people who made that SEGA one. I'd play it cause it looks cute but I've heard its terrible.

Was an awesome game. The Red Wings were super awesome at that time which made it even better (from Michigan, so obviously it is my team of choice).

Russian 5 baby! Konstantinov before he was reduced to his infantile state. Yzerman. Paul Coffey. I played that game so much. That game is so old, it had the Hartford Whalers.

Re: Top Five Sports Games
Not only did I play it on the Genesis, but I used the Blackhawks as well. Roenick was like the Bo Jackson of that game. He was ridiculous.
Re: Top Five Sports Games
Here's mine:
1. NCAA Football (PS2): I played these so much and loved them to death on the PS2. I have since sort of stopped making time for sports games. I'm not sure which my favorite. Either the Leftwich's senior year or Vince Young's junior year. Those guys were a blast to play with.
2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1): I spent so much time with this. The addition of the manual opened up so many options. Loved the maps. All the Pro Skater games were pretty great though they kind of lost me after that.
3. Skate series (PS3): Pretty much talked about this earlier. Tony Hawk was a really fun game and it gets the edge because of just how much time I spent playing them, but as a skater this saw the sport realized in video game form. I still play spot battle with friends. I love all three. The first is probably my favorite though no off-board abilities wasn't ideal.
4. Madden: Honestly I've been playing this series for so long, I think it has to be on here. It's become really complacent and I no longer buy it to be honest, but for years it was my go-to football game. I actually really loved 05 where it went against the much hyped 2K5. You could direct receivers out of the pocket. It was pretty rad.
5. NBA 2K (PS3): Great basketball game. Any of these are great.
I opted for series I put the most time into though not necessarily in that order. There are so many sports games I've played and love. I used to play a lot of Tiger Woods on Gamecube and loved it. NBA Jam, Tecmo Super Bowl, Wrestlemania 2000, NHL on Genesis, Hot Shots Golf Fore! (it had Jak in it too!).

05 was my second favorite Madden. They did a really great job with that one. I prefer 06 though because I really loved the right analogue stick controlling your field of vision. If they put that back in a Madden I'd buy it.

Chelios and power? He's nothing but a chump compared to Konstantinov. I haven't even mentioned Norris maestro Nick Lidstrom.
