Self explanatory Top Five soundtracks and songs in games, and a bonus question as Trip suggested any licensed music you really got into cause of games.

Now I just need some time to decide between some of the Final Fantasy soundtracks because Trip is mean and wants individual games and not series D:

Favorite Soundtracks:

1. Final Fantasy Tactics (Favorite track: "Battle on the Bridge")

2. Xenogears (favorite track: "Faraway Promise")

3. Final Fantasy VI (Favorite track: "Forever Rachel")

4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Favorite track: "The Legend of Zelda Overture")

5. Dragon Quest VIII (Favorite Track: "Strange World")

Bonus question: My favorite licensed soundtrack was that of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I grew up on 1980s music, so this game was really reintroducing me to stuff I enjoyed when I was younger.

I actually like games like Burnout or Need for Speed for discovering new music. I got into the All-American Rejects after hearing Top of the World from Burnout Revenge. And I felt pretty cool from playing Most Wanted because I knew that "I Love It" song by Icona Pop before anyone else did. "I crashed my car into the bridge... I DON'T CARE!" perfect for a racing game haha.

Oh yeah, Burnout and NFS used to have great soundtracks. SSX, too. Maybe they still do, but I haven't played enough recently to know.

I'll put my videos in spoilers to keep the page reasonable. In no particular order:

Donkey Kong Country 2.
Spoiler:
The Last of Us.
Spoiler:
Bastion
Spoiler:
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Spoiler:
Persona 4
dat bass:
Honorable mention goes to Silent Hill for being goddamn scary
Spoiler:

Too lazy to post singles. Except for this one from Hotline Miami
Spoiler:

As for licensed soundtracks, SSX 3 and LittleBigPlanet are great

2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
4. Ni No Kuni (I spent about a month during work nights with the World Map music in constant loop in my head; there was nothing I could do to stop it and it was awesome)

Songs

Battletoads theme

Silent Hill 4, Room of Angel

Mega Man 2, Bubbleman Stage

Castle Crashers, Blacksmith & Shop Theme

Let's see...

Soundtracks

1. Zelda (Ocarina of Time)- While no one song makes it into my top-5 the collective awesomeness of Zelda music, specifically OoT will always hold a special place in my heart.

2. Chrono Trigger- I find myself humming a couple of songs from this game pretty regularly. One of which you'll hear later.

3. Persona 4- I mean, come on. It's Persona fucking 4. Of course I love the music.

4. Shatter- Really the game is something to do while you're listening to the soundtrack. Unless it's the Bonus Mode. Then there's no fucking around. That's some intense stuff!

5. Ni No Kuni- Had a hard time thinking of a 5th... but considering this game is fresh in my mind I'll say this for now. I felt the overall soundtrack matched the overall delight I felt playing the game. Jeepers.

Singles- Actually wrote a blog on this back on 1up a while back, so I'll just copy the top-5.

5. Reach Out to the Truth- Persona 4

If this song annoyed you, then you shouldn't have played Persona 4.

4. Hyperspace- Shatter

I was/am slightly addicted to the Bonus Mode in Shatter. And this is the song that plays.

3. Ness' Bike- Earthbound

This song sums up everything I love about Earthbound. Don't need fancy graphics to see the charm here. Ness has a little smile on his face when he's riding his bike. It's almost like he's whistling this song out loud as he's biking around. God damn, I love Earthbound.

2. Lucca's Theme- Chrono Trigger

I still say this is better victory fanfare than Final Fantasy. There might be better songs on this soundtrack, but for some reason I really love this.

1. Baba Yetu- Civilization IV

I remember when I first installed Civ IV I rebooted it three or four times to watch the opening video, because it had this song. It's so epic. It's a rare video game song I actually keep on my iPod.

But let's be real here. This is the best licensed song in a video game, ever. Just the best.

Soundtracks

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2- I forgot just how damn brilliant this soundtrack is. Not just with how good it is, but how well it blends into the game. It can give a sense of mystery or just be downright creepy while still feeling like Star Wars. Yet once you get into battle, damn it makes this game feel so epic. Just listen to these
Spoiler:
2. Sonic 2- Like Matt, it's pretty rare I have a video game song on my iPod. With this game though, I have a good number of them on there (granted they're blended with Michael Jackson though). I love every song in this game.
3. Halo- I honestly find the lack of Halo on this list kind of disturbing.
4. Super Mario World- Mix of nostalgia and really charming tunes
5. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker- Just had a lot of charm to it.

Songs

1. Mirror B Theme (Pokemon XD) Every other song in this game was ass and it was a Pokemon RPG that didn't get me helplessly addicted so it clearly did something wrong, but Mirror B and his amazing theme song completely make up for this. (Song doesn't start until you battle him)
Spoiler:
2. Chemical Plant Zone (Sonic 2)- Half the reason this is my favorite level in the game.
Spoiler:
3. One Final Effort (Halo 3)- Epic. That's the only way you can describe it
Spoiler:
4. Wind Waker theme- Captures the charm of the game so perfectly
Spoiler:
5. Brinstar Theme (Metroid: Zero Mission)- So damn exciting
Spoiler:

Best lisenced- Fallout 3. My Pip Boy was my best friend there.

1. The World Ends With You (Twister)

2.  Silent Hill 3 (I Want Love)

3. Katamari Damacy (Lonely Rolling Star)

4.  Nier (Song of the Ancients-Devola)

5. Ar Tonelico Qoga (Exec Flip Arphage)

I pretty much argued with myself for hours over which FF soundtrack is my favorite but couldn't come to a conclusion and Kay already posted my favorite song (Man with the Machine Gun) so I gave up. No Final Fantasy on this list.

As far as licensed music, I used to be really into the Guitar Hero games (lol). Six by All That Remains is probably my favorite song that series introduced me to.

I'm glad to see all the Silent Hill love (though 3 is obviously the best one Razz). Yamaoka is my favorite composer.

It's like REALLY REALLY hard for me to pick out single songs so I'm just gonna throw out 5 random ones not included in the OSTs on my other list

In no particular order

The King of Sadness (Dynasty Warriors Cool

Spoiler:

Arise Within You (Parasite Eve (picked the 3rd Birthday version since its better quality despite being in well 3rd Birthday))

Spoiler:

Vale of Tears (Alice Madness Returns)

Spoiler:

Main Theme (Shadows of the Damned)

Spoiler:

Calling (The World Ends With You

I'll come back for individual songs, but here is a solid Top Five soundtracks:

1. Shadow of the Colossus: Surprised to not see this yet. The battle themes are amazing and fit perfectly into this game.
2. Mirror's Edge: A few people have mentioned how they have a soundtrack or two they will actually listen to whenever and this is that one for me. Shard is probably my favorite video game song.
3. One of the Zeldas: I don't know which... haha. I know I'm copping out here! Twilight Princess I'll say since it's my favorite Zelda and had that orchestrated field theme on the soundtrack.
4. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: Ummm... I like it.
5. Super Mario Galaxy: I also like it a lot.

As for the bonus question, I discovered Passion Pit through one of the LittleBigPlanet trailers. And that Sia song and Sigor Ros from the two Prince of Persia 2008 trailers.

Shadow of the Colossus had an amazingly epic soundtrack, definitely one of my faves. There's no way I could have picked between the Zelda games, but Saria's Song always makes me feel all happy inside.

Sarias Song is pretty nice, it's a happy song. I also like Epona's Song. Need to think carefully about my choices so I'll be back in a bit.

I feel I should give a mention to Godot's theme after playing Trials and Tribulations. Listening to this while the guy blabs on about coffee metaphors is just plain awesome

Top Five Tuesday | Top Five Game Soundtracks/Songs Empty Re: Top Five Tuesday | Top Five Game Soundtracks/Songs

Post by Krubixcube Sun Jul 14, 2013 10:56 pm

Holy shit never posted my top 5: I went for picks that not only work really well in game but are enjoyable to listen to on their own.

1. Silent Hill 2

2. Final Fantasy VIII - It's REALLY close between VIII and VII on here but they both were some of the best soundtracks in an era filled with great PSX era RPG soundtracks. Like they did so much towards creating their worlds and had really strong themes and motifs that went through the whole soundtrack. Made it feel like a journey. They never have strong character themes, or situational themes anymore it seems.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Best electronic score since blade runner, if not better. I love this soundtrack so much. So atmospheric, so cool.

4. Chrono Cross - Another soundtrack that defined the game it was in, also really good to chill out to/study to.

5. Shadow of the Collossus - I'm with Trip, why aren't more people picking this soundtrack?

As for songs...will think on it.

I approve of this. FFVIII had my favorite soundtrack overall of the PS1 Final Fantasy games.
