Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles Empty Re: Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles

1. Crash Bandicoot- These games still look good to me, but this was the first game where I really saw a jump from 2D to 3D and it blew my fucking mind.
2. Mass Effect- Goddamn Citadel. Mind blowingly awesome.
3. Gears of War- Remember seeing this in an EGM and just thought to myself right then, "Yep, that's next gen." Hammer of Dawn was pretty awesome too.
4. Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction- Looked like a Pixar movie. Not a game almost looking like a Pixar movie, but an actual movie.
5. Uncharted 2- There were many moments, but I'd have to go with that building collapsing

Didn't really follow games enough before this gen to be wowed by graphics back then with the exception of Crash.

1. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Despite how one feels about the game overall, it was a serious jump in visuals. It was my 2nd PS2 game (after Max Payne) so it left quite an impression.
2. Gears of War - the level and creature design is fucking crazy and almost hilarious in its attention to detail.
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Uncharted 2 - yeah, the collapsing apartment sequence is great but the climb out of the train car and the escape from the collapsing ruins was fucking bonkers, too.
5. Halo 4 - Yeah, no shit. The vistas and cut scene animations were jaw-dropping and really pushed the 360 to its limits (or so I think). Just a beautiful game overall. Prometheans still suck balls, though.

1. Metal Gear Solid 2 - I was a HUGE MGS fan so playing the demo of this game even blew my mind.

2. Final Fantasy IX. So I'd played a lot of PC games, and FF7 and 8 and some other PSX games but for some reason I remember the graphics of FF9 really impressing me. The CG cutscenes, the pre rendered backgrounds, the character designs being all colorful and distinct. Don't ask me why...I know even at the time it wasn't amazing but I remember it leaving an impression.

3. The Bouncer - I bet you guys dont' even remember this shitty game. But it was the game that came bundled with my first PS2, was the first PS2 game I played and it blew my god damn mind. The jump between PSX muddy-ass graphics and this was...intense. But it's a ridiculously shitty game, like dayum.

4. FEAR - The first FEAR game blew my mind when I was younger. When I had a PC that was running I remember wondering how it could get any better. And oh how funny that thought is now.

5. Shadow of the Collossus. Just...damn, like...damn.

Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles Empty Re: Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles

Hmmm... here are some that come to mind:

Jak and Daxter's streaming world: Not only was Jak the first really good-looking game I got on the PS2, but it was this big world with no loads. First time this was done I do believe. And it was impressive.

Shadow of the Colossus' scale: Just the scale of these large moving objects. Pretty nuts. Also they were using some techniques that were just beyond what any other PS2 game was doing. Sure it was at the cost of the framerate, but whatever.

Uncharted 1 and Gears 1: Just a huge jump from the previous generation. Uncharted looked better, but I probably saw Gears first.

I'd like to list some older ones, but I don't think I appreciated graphical jumps in the same way as I do now.

Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles Empty Re: Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles

1. Final Fantasy VII - that was the most incredible console game I'd ever seen at the time. Frankly, it looked more awesome than any PC game that existed back then, too.

2. Super Mario 64 - Almost as impressive a leap as FFVII in a different way - the free-roaming 3-D world.

3. Final Fantasy X - I didn't think the PS2 could impress me as much as the leaps of FFVII and Super Mario 64 above. FFX proved me wrong.

4. Donkey Kong Country - It wasn't the best platformer the SNES had to offer, but it sure was pretty.

5. Bonk's Adventure (TG-16) - This was the first 16-bit game I remember seeing up close and personal, and with all the colors and parallax scrolling objects, it sure looked impressive compared to the NES games that wer standard for its time.

Huh, not sure if these count but I'll bite:

Super Mario 64: Seeing Mario in 3D and seeing him move in 3D Space was like a revelation. Yes the game hasn't aged well but there was nothing like it in it's time.

F-Zero GX: I only had a GCN during that era, and I've played a couple of games, but F-Zero GX was a game that not only played good, but looked good. It looks like a game that pushed the system to it's graphical limits. That game looks good even today.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: This was the first SW game I ever played and boy was it amazing. The game has a great start starting you off at the Death Star and it just get's better from there. It still looks amazing, and I'm impressed they pulled that off for a launch title.

Metroid Prime 3: This was also my first Metroid game and I was impressed with it and I couldn't believe I was missing out after all these years. SMG2 looks great for a colorful game, but for a game that was a leap in graphics for the Wii, MP3 was that game.

Batman Arkham Asylum: I'll be honest that the only reason I got a PS3 was to play some games with you guys. I think I had a PS3 for about 2-3 months at that point and I was regretting it. I had 3 games and none of them really impressed me. Yes the visuals looked nice, but only a bit. Till I got Arkham Asylum and boy was I blown away by that game. It just looked amazing, sure maybe UC2 looked far better than AA, but Batman was the first game that I got a taste of what I've been missing, both gen and graphics-wise.

Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles Empty Re: Top 5 Visual Leaps On Consoles

1.  Final Fantasy VII - Originally I was going to say Tekken 2, since it was the first game I got moving from SNES to PS1.  Tekken 2 looked way better than Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, that's for sure, but then in the first issue of OPM I saw a review of Final Fantasy VII, and I was amazed.  I literally bought that game based on visuals alone.  I never played a Final Fantasy game before, let alone an RPG.  Thank god for those great visuals, because without them I wouldn't play some of my favorite games.  I remember the chocobo ranch really impressing me.  That silo looked so real.  To this day I still think the pre-rendered backgrounds look amazing.

2.  MGS2 - Kojima is almost always the first to mind blow us with each new gen (MGS, MGS2, MGS4, Peace Walker was amazing on the PSP).  I remember calling in my dad to watch the demo I got, and I'm sure he could care less.  The game just looked so real and so awesome.  Playing the HD remake a year ago it still looked great.

3.  Uncharted - Sure U2 looks better, but I just thought this game looked so amazing.  Felt like I was playing a movie, and that jungle just looked so great.  For a game as old as that, it still looks awesome.

4.  Ni No Kuni - Just a beautiful game.  Great animations for the entire length of the game.

5.  Infinity Blade 2 - I don't know how many people have iPhones/iPod touch/iPads in here, but if you have one and don't have this game you're missing a visual treat.  This game looks better than a lot of PS3/360 games.  Also, it's on sale right now for $.99.  Go buy it.

Krubix, I agree that Final Fantasy IX looks amazing.  It took what VII and VIII did so well, and gave you much better character animations.  Watching Zidane hang with his tail was cool.  Watching ol' Rusty Steiner trot about looked and sounded great.  Watching Vivi stumble and fall was super cute.  Great looking game, better than VII, but VII just came and impressed me first.

Oh and Trip, I always thought the first Jak game looked better than the last two.  At least the world/setting.  Animations weren't as good, but the world I just loved in the first game.

I only saw the TG-16 at stores at the mall here in Norman myself, at high-end electronics stores. Nobody I knew owned one, either. All the TG-16 stuff I've ever played I played on Wii Virtual Console. But damn, it sure looked awesome in its time.

I could see that. There is something very charming about the first game. Bright colors and 60 fps. Obviously Jak 3 is doing some things technically that are in a whole other league (characters models, animations, more detailed environments, particle effects, etc.). But I could definitely see preferring the look of the original.

It was just so charming and fun to run around in. And I remember being super impressed with the no loading screens.

I approve strongly of the list above me, particularly Ni no Kuni. That game is freakin' awesome. Also, it might be funny coming from someone who's not into shooters, but I thought Gears of War was pretty impressive in its day.

Agreed on Rogue Leader, that game still looks amazing, and for a launch title at that.

Didnt I already say EVERYTHING outside the anime cutscenes was gorgeous though?

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyways

1. Chrono Cross: Best looking PS1 game imo

2. Wind Waker: lots of charm and it still looks amazing today

3. Dead or Alive Ultimate: Breast physics

4. Ni No Kuni: It looks like an HD Wind Waker to me

5. The Last of Us: I'm not usually a fan of realistic graphics, but this game did it better than I've ever seen
